We find almost daily in our exchanges from
different parts of the country very favorable no
tices of the Hon. James Buchanan as the Demo
cratic candidate fo . .the Presidency. From Maine
to Texas he has warm friends who speak out
earnestly for his nomination. lie is the favorite
ism of Pennsylvania, and could no doubt poll an
utiprecetimitedly large vote in the old Keaton°
State. Pennsylvania tins never yet furnished a
candidate for that office, and will not willingly
yield her claim this time when so able and unex
ceptionable a man is so unanimously 'presentA
and urged as Mr. Buchanan will be by the dele
gation from this State itt the National Conven
tion. Mr. Buchanan stands clear of many of
th.- recent disturbing issues. His principles are
well known. His public services from the time

preciated:' At home and, abroad ho has discharg
ed the difficult duties of high public stations with
gritat credit to himself and the country, and to
the general satisfaction of the people of the
whole county.
Pennsylvania will be the main battle ground in
the next Presidential canvass, and, with Mr. Bu
chanan as our standard bearer, he can carry the
State by a large majority. Judging from the
tone of the press such seems to be the general
opinion far and near. No other party will pre
sent a candidate who can be compared with him
fur ability and experience, and his personal and
private character is unexceptionable.
1s a member of the House of Kopresentatives
of Congress he early distinguished himself fur
sound ability. As a member of the Senate he
tanked ttroong such meh4Jay, Cass, Webster,
Calhoun, Benton and ATitii c - y, though younger
than either. As Secretory of State, in Mr. folk's
administration,. his prudence and ability con
tributed largely to bring the country through
that era of war and of great national events
with distinguished honor and success. Is
inter to England for the last three years the whole
country, without distinction of party, has relied
with confidence on his eminent qualities as a states
man to sustain all the rights and the honor of the
niftion without unnecessarily hazarding the inter
ests of peace. Ile was the man for the place
during the existing difficulties with England
lle will be the next President if nominated.
It will be seen that the English government is
resolved to break its treaty, though war may en
-6110. Sir Ilenry.,Bulwer makes n modest pro
posal to act as mediator between the two gov
ernments. lie is the very man who negotiated
that treaty ou the part of England. It seems to
he ttilirtned that Mr. Bucharum and Lord Claren
don did have some words of not the most :twirl-
Itle character. But that toots proof yet. Mr.
linehanan will soon be home, and we shall prop
alt!y have the whole negotiations thus far made
public before long. The two governments are
certainly renting directly at issue upon a totes.-
lion of much importance. (Mr government i.z4

We hope the United States government will he

England may violate a solemn treaty, an•l go un

The London Ihxporh gl rem the true cause of
English anger just now of the American am

to the present war in Europe. So, this country,
like Prussia, is to be forced to sympathise with
England in Ifer wars or have war with her,`and

THE ALLEGHENY PAVING LAW'
-~. ;, ;
dt. : ~
The people of Allegheny are discussing the
subject of the repeal of their paving laws, R 13.1
so far, wherever a vote is taken, it results in favor
of the law as it is by a large majority. It is now
proposed that a vote of the people be taken on
the subject, and that the roimicils provide b)
ordinaw•e for such an election or rote. If there
is doubt as to public sentiment thiA ,111,
ject, such a vote is the way to settle it.
But one thing should be borne in milor If
the laws are to be repealed restitution should
certainly be made to all property holders who
have thus far graded and paved, at their own
expense, in front of their own lots. Otherwise
great injustice will lie done them. It would be
grossly wrong that they should be compelled to
improve, at their own cost, in front of their own
grounds, and then come under a general tax to
improve in front of other people's lots. That
would surely be wrong.
But so far as public sentiment has been indi
cated yet, it seems likely that a vote of the peo
ple would result in favor of the laws as they are.
Occasional hardships they may produce; and On
does the mode of grading and paving in Pitts
burgh. it would be easy to name cases in thi,
city in which men have been nearly ruined I , N
.• deep cuts in front of their looses and lots
tine came opposite to our Court house could be
cited.
We believe that when either city has each,
Imbed one grade and the people have built to it
and the city then resolves to lower the grade ani
rut flown the street., the city should be liable t,
pay to the property holders the damage they
suffer otherwise 110 ITI3II is safe in building, I/1
improving his property. It is the yradeg, the
deep eats and embankments that occasion thi
hardships. Their mere leveling and paving in
front of lots suit work no great hardship to any
one. No one would make serious complaint a-
to that, it the work was properly dune.

It. Giddings publishes a letter iu the Natron,.'
Era, in which he expresses a wish to retire from
public life; but there is nothing in it whieli
would prevent him bowing to the will of his eon
stitneuts, were they to insist on retaining his
services ! We hope, however, Mr. Giddings may
he taken at his word, and allowed to retire from
the Halls of Congress. He pretends to be a
great friend of the negro, but for the sixteen
years he has been in public life has not pretend
ed to look after the interests of white men. We
are inclined of say to the arch-agitator as was
said of the man who emigrated to Botany Bay,
he " leaves his country for his country's good."
THE MURDERERS OF Bisit. 1.1. Goanoa.—The
telegraph some days ago stated that E. I). Wor
rel had been arrested at Dover, Del., for the
murder of Basil 11. Gordon, and we learn from
St. Louis papers of Saturday that William 11.
Bruff, supposed to be his accomplice in the deed,
was taken into custody at Nashville, Tenzo Mr.
Greene arrested at Cincinnati was discharged,
as there wag no evidence against him.

BREAK/NO VP OF 7'llE ICE-LICKING

SE VERA I: OTHERS INJ me .'—ONE'
11 UN - DR ED THOUSAND DOLLARS
WORTH OF PROPERTY DESTROYED.
The great ice-bridge across the Ohio, was de
stroyed yesterday, after fifty-three days duration.
We regret to announce, however, that the de
struction of property is immense—much greater
than was anticipated. During the twelve hours
ending at dusk on Saturday evening the river
rose about five inches. All the steamers ice
bound at the levee, and in the harbor at the
mouth of Licking river had raised steam, and
were in complete working order in anticipation
of the long looked for breaking, up. About 11
clock, on Saturday night. shrieks from the shrill
whistles and tolling of the numerous goat bells
gave the signal that the ice was moving. Not
withstanding the late hour the excitement was
immense, and in a few minutes all the heats were
thoroughly manned with efficient crews. The
ice in Cho Ohio, opposite the levee, moved a dis
tance of a square or two, when it again gorged.
All was quiet until about 9 A. M., yesterday,
when the lee in Licking commenced moving,
gorging some four or five feet high at the mouth,
but mtarttul again about 11 o'clock, taking the
course Ut the ice-channel cut by order of " lee
rommittpe,” a short time since. The scene was
grand and terrific beyond description. It moved
in huge fragments, and , inartering towards the
foot of Main street cut down several boats in a
few minutes. The propeller Alhertine, princi
pally loaded for Nashville was the first boat sunk,
and is a total wreck. She was built last sum

his passports, and the absence of himself from
a seine given by Lord Palmerston is attributed
to the personal. misunderstanding between the
Earl of Clarendon and himself. We have no
particulars of the misunderstanding, as the Eng

subject. Earl d'.l

Mr. Buchanan, whieh the latter checked by
