Mr. findings was, present, and he "threw cold water'' on Mr. Greeley's adiice, and said Washington was ti poor pinee from which to receive advice. Pass. more Williamson appeared, end was shown oil to the audience " :unid cheers and laughter." Ile could not speak, however, and was let down quietly. Francis P. Blair was made president Lee:Luse he was once the friend of Jackson. The audience was a dozen times told that a son of Rufus King was amongst them. It was the 2'.2d of February, and of course almost every speaker referred to the fact with great reverence. It was in Pittsburgh, and the audience were re minded that Washington won his first laurels in this vicinity. That part of Washington's Fare well Address in which he deprecates the evils o: sectional issues, sectional parties and strifes, wa: not recited by the learned orators. On the whole, considerable tact was displayed in magnifying small incidents, and making a.- much capital as possible out of all available ma terials. After all, the audience was quiet, ex cept when a pun or a joke was perpetrated, 07 something particularly violent was said about slavery or Kansas. Enthusiasm, except at such moments, was not the order of the day. 7th. One great fact stands out apparent in the whole proceedings and specche ,, . An effort is to be made to combine with that branch of the Know Nothings who will not stand upon the na tional platform of their party. A combination of abolitionists and soft-shell Know Nothings is resolved upon. Mr. Reemelin, a Gorman speaker in the Convention, was much dissatisfied with the turn of idrairs, and did nut believe any German votes could be obtained. Bth. The Address was exceedingly long and elaborate, and occupied nearly two hours in the reading. A very convenieut gull trap is to be made of it.. It is to he taken hack to New Yuri: city and re-written just as Messrs. Raymond. Greeley and Seward please, before it is pbblish. ed. Thus the Convention adopts one Address, Messrs. Greeley', Seward and Raymond will put forth :mother that will just suit the purposes of the three New Yorkers. The) hove got the free-Boilers in their hands and power, and will alter the Address so as to suit the Know Nothings, too, and have them: and then their Address will be called the creed of the party. %Veil done, New York Yankees Vire, la hunabinz oth. THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION RE VIEWED e aro at leisure now to review the procoel ing: and character of the Convention lately as sett , hled here 14. It produced no great sensation in our cit,. The hall in which it convened was not a lar : _qi one; yet it was at no time inconveniently crowded. Several large halls could have been found ; but no larger one was needed. The ball, it is estimated, will hold comfortably eight or nine hundred. Yet there was room enough for all the delegates, all the sympathisers, and all those who looked in from curiosity. In numbers, then, the Convention was not large, and, for so large a city, it drew but a small crowd of look ers on." d. Ft was not a representative body delega by party organizations in the different States. It was in fact but a voluntary gathering, cacti State and district being personated by as many as chose to come, and under such circumstances the larger proportion were of course tho politician. and the orators of the freesoil party. It did no come together for the purpose of expressing the loar sentinicat of the verb - ins delegates, but to manufacture a public sentiment, in the shape 0 a platform, fur home consumption. The plat form is a Pittsburgh manufacture, and the free soilers throughout the Northern States are ex p, ted to adopt it implicitly whether it accords - with their previous views or not. I. It wo.t not a National COlWElltion. Several numbers were present from most of the Northern States hut from all the fifteen Southern States be' three persons were present. Such a body cannot be said to constitute a National Conven tion. It was hut a sectional convention, laying the foundations of a sectional party, and expect ing support only from the Northern States. Its entire strength lies north of Mason and Dixon's line; and the sentiment: , uttered by the speakers were those of unkindness and hostility to all south of that line. 4th. The sentiments of a party can be better learned from the language of the speakers than from the platform adopted. The platform con s of an Addres - s - drawn up by discreet and craning politicians, and indicates generally a tone of moderation lhat, in this instance at. least, , loss not characterize the party. And then the I ith of June was fixed as the day for their Convention to meet to nominate a candidate for the Presidency. It is the anni versary of the battle of Bunker's Hill. That battle fairly inauguratol a war in which the south stood shoulder to Shoulder with the north like a band of brothers. The anniversary of that day is to be employed in completing the or gmization of a party that would sever the south from the north in wrath and anger, and let the t:nion slide." It will be re membered that. on the Bth instant, we commen ted on a report made by the ship Pocahontas, at Norfolk from Boston, which was, that on the 21st January in lat. 38° 55', long, 72° 10', she "saw a steamship with signal of distress, but could render no assistance owing to the wind blowing, fresh from the west !" There may, possibly, be some connection be tween the steamship in distress, seen by the Poca hontas on 21st January, and the wreck of a steamship seen by the Andover on the 126th Janu ary. If the Captain of the Pocahontas had dis charged the duties of humanity at sea, which are obligatory upon his profession, and had answer ed the signal of distress—no matter which way the wind blew—the public might ho spared the anxiety, that will now be felt, to know what •teamship it is that has been wrecked at sea.— A" I'.
