There are two great rivers or channels running
one through the Atlantic and the other through
the Pacific Ocean, that produce remarkable ef
fects upon the climate of the globe. The Gulf
,Streain may be called an ocean river" rising in
"the Gulf of Mexico, and flowing out of it between
Cuba and Florida, and running thence in a north
eastwardly direction, nearly parallel with the
Atlantic coast. It expands in width as it flows
northward, and turning more eastward as it pass
es New Foundland, it stretches across the Atlan
tic Ocean till it r:aches the coast of Ireland,
Scotland and 'England, and even the northern
shores of Norway. The waters of this ocean
river are much warmer than those of the ocean
through which it runs : and it preserves its idea',
tity and distinctness from the Mexican Gulf till
It is 10.,t sight of in the regions of the northern
pole. As :t pas , e , admg our Atlantic coast, it
waruis the atmosphere, and renders the climate
much milder all along that coast. It produce;
the min, effects on the climate of New Found
land, of Ireland, Scotland, England, and even
Norway. It melts the icefiergs that boat down
from the polar regions, and thus modifies their
chilling effects upon our climate. Thus, several
regions of the globe are warmed by this ocean
river. S., strong is its current, that portions of
vessels wrecked near the Gulf of Mexico may of
ten be found a twelve-month afterward on the
coasts of Scotland and Norway.
Tile causes of this stream are yet unknown.
The warmer i-nd rarer waters of the Gulf !nay

by the influx of colder and inure dense waters
from the north. This ib true of atmospheric
currents; but is not yet fully proven in regard
to water. No counter-currents of cold water
are found flowing into the Gulf to supply the
loss by the cut-pouring of the Gulf stream.
