John Reed, of the Fourth ward, received a w,arnnt
from Alderman Donaldson, to arrest a man named
Matthew• Coward, for the larceny of a Newfoundland
dog. Ile found the defendant on Fourth street. near
Grant, and 'wounded td take him into custody, but
was resisted, and a Struggle foltlluunee , l between

stone or brick, which he threw at Reed, striking hilt:
upon the head, and injuring him very badly. It

In the case of Power vs. Halstead, a verdict of
$1,288 ftl was rendered for plaintiff.
Kane Smith, for nse, vs. Cash Mutual Insurance
Company. Opinion of the court on the reserved
question " Are the defendants liable for the whole
amount of plaintiffs' loss, or only for a pro rata sham
thereof." It is considered and adjudged that tho
plaintiffs for use are not entitled to recover off the
defendants the whole amount of their loss, but only
a ratable portion, viz: throe-sevenths thereof, amount
ing, as found by the jury, to $459,11, and the Pro
thonotary is ordered to enter judgment in favor of
the plaintiffs for use against the defendant on the
special verdict for the above sum, with interest from
date of the verdict.

Judge Shafer ammunced the decease of Reade Wash
ington, Esq., a iumulter of the liar, and moved an
adjournment, out of respect to the memory of the
deceased. The motion was seconded by J. E. Brady,
Esq., who pronounced a I.ricf but feeling eulogium
upon his diameter. Judge Hampton, in granting
the motion, also made a few remarks, in which he
spoke highly of the deceased.
