Yost, of Pittsburgh, for nn improve:lb nt in pliigli ; and 4,0 Mr. Yost, for an improvement iu grain and grass harvesters —Cream cannot rise through a great depth of milk. lf, therefore, milk is desired to retain its cream for a time, it shoal i be put into a deep, narrow dish and if it be desired to free it most completely of cream, it should be poured int. , a broad, fiat dish, not much es.recyhmz, nc inch in depth. The evolution of cream is facilitated by a rise, and retarded by a depr,!ssiou of tempera ture. At tho usual temperature of the dairy-511 degree:- of Fahrenheit—all the cream will, per haps, rise in half that thee and when the milk is kept near the freezing point, the cream will rise very slowly, because it becomes solidified. In wet and cold weather the milk is less rich than in dry and warm, and on this account more cheese is obtained in cold than in warm, though net in thundery weather. The season has its ef feet& The milk in spring is supposed to be the best for drinking hence it would be the best for calves: in summer it is best suited for cheese ; and iu autumn the, butter keeping is better than that of summer—the.cowaless frequently milk ed, give riclihr milk, and consequently more but ter. The morning's milk is richer than the eve ning's. The last drawn milk of each milking, at a n times and seasons, is richer than the firs drawn, which is the poorest.— Wrzu.rn Agric e ! /aria. NUMBER 115. TOM CROSBY'S DEED OF MAGIC. Tom Crosby was a cobbler—or, at least, Folds neighbors called him—though ho was in fact, ono of the boat shoemakers in the country. Ile often had to turn applicants away empty-handed; for he had more work always on his hands than ho could attend to. Tom's cottage was neartho cen tre of the village, and his little shop was dose by it., and from morning till night the merry mu sic of his lapstone rang out upon the air. Tom was a steady, industrious man, and 6'er/body liked him. Ile was always kind, alwaV good natured, full of fun and anecdote, and abpve all else. lie was one of those rare persons wheispend their leisuro moments in looking after their own business. Tom was now forty years of age ; and though he had always worked hard and steady, yet he had not accumulated much phop : erry. lie owned the small house and the shop:. together with some four acres of land, which lay buck of the buildings, upon which ho raised a , 00dly store of fruit and vegetables. In 1810, the coal lands of Pcnnsylvania sold for two dollars an were. Like dia monds, may it not have a variety of colors, such as " rod and white." In China there is-plenty of white copper ; this bee generally been believ :l to be as pure a metal as the red. A Corres pondent of the London Mining Jou nvil, however, throws some more light on the matter thin has been posseseed hitherto. lie states, that. when raised in the tuine, in is particular district of China, the ore from which it is made is of a red color, but by a peculiar method of treating, it in smelting, and the addition of 1 1-'2, per cent. of tin, it becomes white. Segnier made a report that M. Laphard has invented a process, simple, cer tain and rapid, by which he can re-produce writing, transfer it to stone, and consequently multiply autographs to any extent. • M. Diehard having been invited to repeat his experiments before a committee of the Acaderny, asked M. Seguier and colleagues for a few 4 4incs written and signed by themselves. The piece ,of „ paper before the ink was yet dry was applied' id blot ting paper, and this blotting paper M. Sichard took home with him. The next day M. , ,Seguier received two copies, one on pareturtettt and tho other on ordinary paper, of the original, which he had kept in his own possession, and which the copies so exactly resembled that it was impossible to tell which of the papers-wits written first. This would be a dangerous discovery in the bands of a counterfeiter. —The process of making coal gas is simple. Bituminous coal is thrown into a hot cylinder of iron, the mouth of which is closed carefully by un iron door, with the edges cemented by soft clay. The vapor arising from the coal is receiv ed into a tube, by means of which it is permitted to escape into a series of vessels,_ where it is cool ed and deposits much of ita impure matter. It is then passed into another series of vessels con taining quicklime, which robs it of its sulphur ous and other nauseous intermixtures. From this receiver it flows purified, as we find it in use, into the 'gasometer, and is front thence dis tributed, as it may be needed, throngli'mains and service-pipes, into varions parts of the' city. The highly charged Bituminous coals are found best adapted to the purpcse.of gas-making. In the manufacture of gas front NeWcastle coal. a chaldion weighing 27 cwt. is fdimd to yield 8,650 cubic feet of gas, 14 cwt. weight of 'coke, 124 gallons ammoniaced liquor, 12 gallons of thick tar.
