COMBINATION TALKED ABOUT
The Republican and K. N. members of the
Legislature at Harrisburg are endeavoring to
effect a fusion of their parties for the next fall
election. It seem , rather a hard task to accom
plish, but may be successful it, some extent. The
RepublieaM4 are certainly a singular party. It
can fuse one year with the K. N.'s for the fir
po,e of defeating the Democrats, and profess the
utmost abhorence of Democracy. Such was the
case at the October election in Ii- 1. A
few months afterwards the Republicans were
combined with the Democrats to beat the Know
Nothings; and front the tone of the preAses it
might hare been supposed that no party WRQ so
much abhorred as Know Nothingism. tin both
sides, however, the Republicans succeeded in se
curing valuable offices. Now comes another
somersault. They propo , e to oombine with the
K. N.'s again to beat the Democrats once more.
They can try it if they choose ; bot can any one
suppose that a party thus unstable, thus willing
to trade with any other party to gain 0 tempo
rary triumph, has much regard for principle'.' Is
it for the good of the negro race they are labor
ing, or for office- and spoils They never offer
fusion except when they can get the be , t of the
bargain ; and they are equally ready to fuse
with any party that offer , them a good bargain,
and a chance for other.
We doubt not that the mass of the people who
attach themselves to the republican party are
sincere and honest in their convictions. But
the /wades—the men who manage the machinery.
and assume the control: cannot lie very sincere
when one year they join the K. N.'s an .1 denounce
the democrats in furious terms. amt the very
next year join with the democrats and denounce
the K. Nfs in even more violent terms. Now
we find theta striving to change t OTICe
1/11.11 - C, and again juin hand: with the American
party. And the Pittsbuigh in speaking
of the Harrisburg movement, rays. lope
it will succeed. - The Ivry part , that the t; t
:cur only a few months ago declared an external
war against, it is now anxious to unite with.
The Americans must be " poor in spirit if they
can so soon forget the past, and seek such an
alliance fur the future. We know that many
have declared they will never consent to it, and
in all probability such a fu-ion will result only
in weakening both parties.
Taking the long struggle in the House of Rep
re,entatires as an in•lieation of party feeling. it
seems pretty evident th:tt there ,an be no cordial
union of .sudi topp.:eote eletuvnts 3, N. Ille !I 11 1-111
and free:tuild,m.

FROM HARRISBURG.
IlortiF OF REFRESENTATIFF.s,
Monday, February 11. j
THE HOUSE.
The Speaker ex a lted the House to order at 3
o'clock, the standing hour of meeting on Mon
days. This has been adopted to accommodate
the members from the city of Philadelphia, who
go home on Saturday at 12 o'clock and return in
time for the afternoon session of Monday. But
should the western members require a few days'
adjournment, these self same gentlemen, who are
indulged by their brother members, are found
voting nay ; except the liberal-hearted Speaker,
who wishes to do to others that which is !fleeted
out to him. So, on next Friday, at Id o'clock,
the State patriots will quit and give up peaceable
possession of both chambers, until the following
Wednesday at 1 o'clock, when they will as- , etoble
again to attend to the duties of their respective
constituents. At the re-asseinbling the people
willing legislation should send on their ho-dness,
so that action may he bad at an early day.
This being petition day, the Committees were
called over, when the usual number was presen
ted. The Liquor question absorbed considerable
time. Petitions for and Itemon-tratice agititust
