This Columbus Times says: 4• We wish we had the voice of a trumpet that we might proclaim to the furthest corner of the State that there are forty thousand citizens of Georgia who can neither read nor write. 44 If we were a member of the Georgia Legis lature this would be our constant and only reply to all the arguments urged against the hills now pending to provide for the education of the youth of Georgia. 44 Think of it: Forty thousand christians who eantwt read the Bible Forty thousand freemen who cannot real the constitution! Forty thous :lo,l eiti AOllO who cannot read the laws! Forty and men, It omen and children in the nine temtli century shut out from all the enjoyments f their age and time: -Can lie , lone fur them, while millions appropriated to build railroads, thousands to endow colleges, hundreds to clean out rivers and dig down mountains? •• Talk not to us of begging and robbing. Is it not known that sia-tenths of the crime committed in the State is perpetrated by men ' who cannot read Are jail fees and penitentiary appropriation more pleasant to pay than the tu ition fees of the schoolmaster'.' Is the hangman more worthy of State itid than the pedagogue ? • •• We call upon our iirethern of the press to collie to the rescue of the unfortunate poor. generation may not appreciate their labors, !nit posterity will bless the noble Men who are now striving to rescue them from the nwful - curse of Ignorance, twin sister of Sin and first horn of the devil. - Read Kentucky instead of Georgia, and soy ," enty thousand instenil of forty, and you will have n lesson for this commonwealth.—Louisville Dem- Vera. swag . . <3.Vr 4',,3:'` . ' The arrival of the new Royal Mail steamship ersia in American waters, furnishes a convenient opportunity for publishing the following descrip tion of her: The Persia is built of iron, and her engines tit e constructed by Messrs. Robert Napier & Sons. She was launched in the Clyde on the 33 July last, and the intervening period has been fully occupied in laying her machineiy, and fitting her out as the most magnificent floating hotel and goods transport that has ever breasted the waters. This, as we have said, is the largest steafluillip afloat in the world—far exceeding in length, strength, tonnage and steam power, the Great Britain or the Himalaya, and exceeding also,. by no less than 1200 tons the internal capacity of the largest of the present splendid Cunard liners. Her chief proportions may be summed up as follows : According to the strict government rule of ad measuremeot, her power is equal to that of 900 horses : according to the plan laid down in the Earl of Hardwick's bill, her power is equal to that of 1200 horses ; and according to James Watt's old established rule of 83,000 tbs. to the horse, the is expected to work up to the pitch of between 4000 and 6000 horses Length from figure-head to taffrail.... Length in the water Proadth of the hull . Breadth all over Depth Burden Diameter of paddle.wbeell Stupendous as the Persia is, the lines of beauty Inive been so well worked out in the proinL i ntion of her model that her appearance is singularly graceful and lightsome. Vet this mighty fabric, on beautiful as a whole,• is made up of innumera ble pieces of ponderous metal, welded, jointed and riveted into each other with exceeding deft ness. The framing of the ship is very heavy. The space between each frame is only ten inches, and the powerful frames or ribs are themselves ten inches deep, with double angle irons at the outer and inner edges. The bow is constructed in a manner at, once peculiar and affording the greatest possible strength to this important part ,•f the ship. The framing is so placed to the stern that the effect is that, in the case of col lision with other ships, or with rocks or icebergs, the strain would fall upon the very strongest material within the structure, and the Persia would have a good chance of safety and success ful resistanoCii r ifile ordinary vessels would, in deed, be in great peril. She is not clinker built, as seine ships have been constructed of late. The plates or outer planking of the ship, so to speak, are laid alternately, so that one adds strength to the other, and they form a whole of wonderful compactness and solidity. The keel plates are 11-U3ths of an inch in thickness;' at the bottom of the.sh - tp the plates are 15-10ths of an inch in thickness : from this section to, the lead water line they are three-fourths of an inch.; ' sail above this they are 11 -piths of an inch in thickness. The plate, round the gunwales are coven-eights of an inch in thickness. The Persia has seven water-tight compart ments. The goods are to be stowed in two of these divisions, each about.oo feet long by Id in tires:al), and 20 feet in height. These goods' stun es. or rather tanks, arc placed in the centre line of the ship, with the coal cellars or bunkers on each side of them. At the same time, the vessel is so constructed as to have in reality a double bottom under these goods' chambers, so that if the outer were beat in or injured, the inner world, in all likelihood. protect the cargo dry and intact. The chambers are perfectly water-tight: and iu the event of an accident to the hull, these tanks would of themselves float the ship. The liner has two engines and eight lai7e tubular boil,!rs and two funnels; an d, we need only speak of her machinery in general, which is all ready, its being first class. The tiring space for the boilers is placed in the fore ;Ind aft line, instead of across the ship, as is usually the. case with smaller 'vessels, she has separate sleeping accomModatiOns for 201) passengers, disposed along what may be called the main 'leek, lying immediately above the goods and coal stores. These cabins have each feet G inches of head room, and coupled with the excellent system of ventilation intro duced into all the Cunard liners, we need scarcely say, that they will be alike pleasant, airy and healthful. Exclusive of the wholesome accom modation for the officers and engineers, there are in the forward part of the ship about 120 berths for the sailing crew, firemen and strokers. The total number of persons employed in work ing the ship, from the captain downwards, is Ye , . Above the main deck is n deck house cov ered in, the roof of which affords a promenade from stem to stern. It contains the main dining saloon, about GO feet in length by 20 feet in width, and 8 feet in height. It is copiously fighted from the sides by plates of glass placed in the alternate panels. In front is that impor tant adjunct, the pantry, which has about 300 square feet of area : and before the funnels is the kitchen, of equal size, with its .cooking ranges, exceeding most and equalling any of the oulina ry establishments of the most extensive and no ted limas in the kingdom. But we have not ;space to enter further into detail than to say, that on this deck and below it are also to be found the bakery, the hotelier's shambles, the scullery, the cow house, the carpenter's work shop, the lamp house, the doctor's shop, the ice houses, the bath rooms, and no fewer thau 20 water closets. The weight of the iron in the Persia when launched was 2.200 tons. Witen'ilie engines are on board and fully loaded, the weight of the im mense mass will be 3,300 tons, at which time she wir draw 23 feet of water. Iter coal cellars are constructed to receive 1,400 tons of coal, an ample supply to carry her on her way across the Atlantic y fast as she can linen them. She has also accomtnodations for about 1,200 tons meas urement of goods. This may be consideredsmall when the extraordinary capacity of the Persia is considered, but it must be remembered that her main design is that of a fleeting hotel, and that the goods of the liners of Messrs. Burns are principally those by which the manufacturing in genuity and refinement of the East minister to e comfort and luxury of the West. THE following stanza contains every letter in the English alphabet exoept " E." It is a ques tion whether any other English rhyme can be produced (in print) without the letter " E," ,which is a letter employed more than any other: A jovial swain may rack Ids brain And tax his fancy's might, To quiz in vain, for 'Cis mo s t plain That what I say is right.
