Serious Adel:dent to Sheriff Patterson.—An unfor
tunate accident, resulting in serious injury to Sheriff
Patterson, occurred yesterday afternoon. The Sheriff,
In company with Mrs. Patterson, was attending the
funeral of Mrs. Collins in a sleigh. At the toll-gate,
he got out to fix something about the harness pf the
horses, which.delayed him some distance behind the
funeral procession. Just as he ro-entered the sleigh,
several follows, in horse wagons, came furiously
racing by, one of whom ran on the vehicle of the
Sheriff, striking him in the back with the tongue of
the wagon, Fuld injuring him in the severest manner.
Several ribs were broken and serious internal injuries
caused. The sleigh was, overturned and broken to
pieces, Mrs. Patterson precipitated some distance
upon the road, and also injured, though not seriously.
The Sheriff was picked up in an insensible condition
and conveyed to a neighboring house, where be re
mained until evening, when he was brought to his
residence on Fourth street. Drs. Pollock and Mur
dock were called in to attend him, and pronounced
the injuries of a very dangerous character. Late in
the evening, three men, named Valentine Ilorbaugh,
Edward Boyle and Frederick Fallbach. were arrested
by Mayor Bingham and High Constable King. and
conveyed to the watch-house, charged with being
concerned in the occurrence. llurbaugh acknow
ledges] he was the driver of the wagon that injured .
Mr. Patterson. but td . course had vlu.zen excuses fur
his culpable rarelessness. Warrants were issued for
the arrest of Iwo others, and they are probably ar
rested ere this.
