the vessel with an air pnmp. A few grains of
white sugar and chloride of potash are mixed to
gether and placed upon the top of the gunpow

a little sulphuric acid through the syphon, bring
ing it in contact with the sugar and chloride,
and the chemical action produces an instant ex

the boiler through spiral copper tubes, which
converts either in a cylinder unto vapor, and it
then actuates the piston to give it motion. We
have seen some statements in our foreign ex

formed to test Du Tremblay's steam and either
engines—and who have hml some ships propelled
by such engines running between Marseilles and

GI ELDER RA TL.-W. B. Adams,.E. E., of Lon
don, has obtained a patent for a new rail, which
has been tested on the Great Northwestern Bail
road, over which a heavy coal traffic passes.
The rail is similar to Ole ordinary one, but 2
inches deeper, being 7 instead of 5 inches deep.
There is a flange at top and bottom, and on each
side angle bracketkpne side of which fills. up
the space between Mqangel secured to the rail
by bolts, the other extends outwards, forming a
sort of longitudinal shelf nt each side, level with
the ballast, so that when packed, all that is seen
is Sk inches rising above the brackets. These
form a secure bearing of 13 inches wide. The
ballast is packed from each side, and thus se
cures the permanent way. The gauge is kept
correct by the rods, about 9 feet apart. No
wog ler' sleepers ore employed, and the entire
rails and appendages, consisting of rails, brack
ets, bolts and tie-bar+. are of wrought-iron; the
whole, when complete, forme one compact mass.
This rail i.; expensi at first. hut is said to be
the cheapest in the end, as it endures longer
than the common kind, and requires less atten

she had more fret t uently visited.. A mind so consti.

late as within the last three years, she would'walk
from her residence into the city, a distance of four
miles, directing her carriage where t. call for her,
her object probably beingto visit some pensioner on
the road, or if not, for e pleasure of the exercise.
These were interrupted by a paralysis with which
she was visited about eighteen months ago, from the
effects of which she never so entirely recovered as to

something—remember that."
With nothing of brilliancy to startle or wonder at,
the evenness of her life presents a constellation of
virtues rare amongst mortals, and her memory will
be long cherished by those whose happiness it was
to knew her, in this city, in Butler and in Philadel

value of her various and constant-virtues.

F URTHE U. IN RELATION TO TILE OWED
RIVER IMPROVEINENFT.
A few days since we referred to a report of
Josiah Copley, Esq., in relation to the content ,
plated slackwater improvementof theOltio river:
Since the report was made public, tho Pittsburgh
Board of Trade have taken new action upon ; the
subject, looking to practical reaulti. The Board
propose that a convention be &lain Cincinnati,
on the first of May, to take•into consideration
the whole matter, including the various modes of
improving the river that hey° been proposed. ;
The several Chambers of Commerce of the coal;
mercial cities both east and west, are invited - to
co-operate with the Pittsburgh Board of Trade
in the preliminary movements necessary tO the
organization of a company, and in preseittg-the
claims of the enterprise upon Congress, the
Legislatures of the Several States bordering upon
that river, and- upon the merchants, mannfactu
rers and property holders of the vario.usnities
and towns whose interest will be benefinitdly
affected by the' improvement. At the meeting of
the Board referred to it wns resolved totake ire ,
mediate measures , to procure the requisite con
current, legislation in the several States herder
lag upon that river, and Mr. Copley was chosen
to vie 'the several western cities for the Purpose
of bringing about a harmony of views as toile
mode of improvement. The Board fully approve
of the plan of dams and locks for improving the
Ohio, yet they are willitr4 to defer to the final
judgment of all the parties interested.
The present zealous efforts to improve the nay+
igation of the Ohio have most: probably. been
somewhat stimulated by the returns of the livid
ness upon it during the last year, which chow
that the railroads have waged a very Bodement
competition with the river. As coMpared with
previous years, its business has fallen consider+
ably behind, while that of the railroads running
in the same), direction has largely increased.
This fact is generally confirmatory of the Peel
tion which we assumed some months since, that
railroads, as channels of conveyance in the West,
were constantly gaining on rivers, from their
.le- : patch and certainty, notwithstanding the
higher freights charged upon them. This was
abundantly illustrated last season upon the Up.
per Mississippi, the navigation of which was in+
texTupted for weeks together by the droutli, and
large quantities of goods shipped at St. Louis
for Galena, St. Paul, and other towns, were
brought by water to Peru, and thence taken by
railroad across our State toward 'tie:lr destination.
The navigation of the Ohio was also subject to
interruptions from high water in the spring and
from low water during portions of the summer
and fall. From theee two causes the business
upon it suffered more severely than it had done
for several previous years, and its diminution,
above referred to, is thereby accounted for.
But while the business of the Ohio has thus
suffered, that of the Lakes has '
according to the
returns, largely increased, and must, in the na
ture of things, continue to increase rapidly fora
long time to come, notwithstanding the camped+
lion of several lines of railroad to the seaboard.
The reason for this is obvious. The Lakes,
during the season of navigation, pessOit.orte
indispensable requisite which the Ohio and the
Upper Mississippi lack—re/iability...:4ltere is
no time any great increase or limin 4 tion in
these waters—no sudden floods, sweeping every
thing before them, and then the bars as suddenly
left bare, as we see in the Ohio. Vessels some
times get stuck upon the St. Clair Flats; but the
improvements commenced last season, when car
tied to completion, as they probably will be du
ring tho present year, will remove that difficulty.
)Ur lake 99.1nincrca also _tattlers- - te'etifbly-fttrm
storms, but the evil will be very materially
diminished when our harbors are properly im
proved, and our vessels so modeled as better to
tit them to resist the force of winds and waves.
In spite of these drawbacks, our Lake commerce
has steadily and rapidly increased from the first,
and will increase more rapidly when they shall
have been removed.
We suppose the system of slackwaternavigatioti
proposed by the Pittsburgh Board of l ( raile'for
the improvement of the Ohio is practicable,
though-it may be a question whether its cost—
which Mast be immense—will not outweigh its
advantages. The durability of such improve-
merits may be a matter of doubt, considering the
height to which the Ohio often risee--tiome-fifty
or sixty feet. We can. hardly imagine any, speeies
of dams, whether of wood or of stone, that would
be able to withstand the force of the riishing
torrent. But we have no disposition c ta piece
the least obstacle in the way of the enterprise of
our Pittsburgh neighbors, and hope they may hit
upon some feasible plan,by which it may be suc
cessfully encomplished.• • .
