The Foreign News The peace excitement has increuted all over Europe, as will be seen by the copious details of the Persia's news oil our outside. The funds— thlt sure barometer of opinion—had greatly ad vanced, but afterwards receded—showing some distrust in the public mind. line thing appears evident—all parties are heartily sick of the war, and would gladly escape if it can be done with out n loss of honor. We can hardly expect any further news until the latter end of this week, as at this season of the year the steamer's make poor time. When it does arrive, it will proba bly settle the matter either fur peace or war. ALL.EGIIIENV VALLES' RAILROAD The Reports of the President and Engineer of this Company have been laid before the pub lic, and have doubtless been read by those in terested in such matters. They present the affairs of the Company as in a favorable condi tion, and give good encouragement that means can be found to complete the road from this city to Brookville, Jefferson county, adistanceor eighty eight miles. It hi already completed and in use from Pittsburgh to Kittanning, forty-four miles and the earnings indicate a constant aml rapid increase of business since the road was first opened. 1t earned over forty-two hundred dol lars in the month of January, though laboring under the serious disadvantages of deep snows, and a stoppage of the trains at the eastern line of the city, two miles from its proper depot. As the spring and spring business open its earnings will doubtless be largely increased But an eligible right of way through the city to its depot at the Point should he granted as soon as pos sible. By the Report it appear that the Company is aiming to reach Win.low on the line of the Sun bury and Erie railroad, instead of Ridgeway. ag heretofore supposed. Winshiw i, forty-four miles north of east from Brookville. The whole route, then, which the Company desires to com plete in order to secure good eastern and north eastern connections is one hundred and thirty two miles long. One-third of it is already completed tii Kittanning. Another third. from the latter place to Brookville, the Company hope to be able to complete with mean. ,scored. or that may yet he obtained. To complete that re maining third between Brookville and Winslow the rands have yet to be found, and i• is be lieved that eastern o.tripaniev and citir ili tin.l it to their intere , t to furni-h materi,i; "Phi.; route, wheu completed, w.iithi st direct connection with New Yotk, and ako with Albam• and Ito.ton. But we consider, after all, that the main value of this road to..Pitistiergh will lie in openinc up to its trade of that rich mineral, lumber and agricultural region along the valley , . of the Alle gheny and Clarion rivers. Some eight or nine large counties compose that region and this road will induceits rapid settlement by a popula tion tlikt will soon become one of the most pro perous in the State. Lnder the present and prospective enhanced talus of lumber its vast forests will be a source of great wealth ; and its inudense bed: , of iron ore would be doubled in value by a railroad extending item, them to Pittsburgh and other large markets. It i= a good farming reghin, too and when 1111,1 up with such a population as it can support and enrich it will be one of ;he most profitable markets in the whole country for Pittsburgh manufactures and merchandise The region we have named can sustain a population of a million people, and trill alone give full employment to such a railroad as the Allegheny Valley when completed with such liranclies as will fully itecommodate its trade and its wants. Ilene then is a market in the fu ture, within three or four hours ride from Pitts burgh, that this road will in part create, and will secure to a great extent to this city. The Com pany ha, the right by legislative enactment, to construct branches from its main line in any di rection in that region when trade may lie seem ed. or the wealth of those counties be devel.ped. But this near and great interest of this road not its Only value to this cammunity. Hi, letter of to•ilay speaks of a matter in which the citizens of Pittsburgh are especially interested. It will be seen that the question of the repeal of the High School law loin been withdrawn from the Committee iin Education and referred to a special committee consisting of the member° from this county, Uo we want such a school or nut. is the question. It is now in successful operation Shall it be stopped, and the law providing for it repealed, :Ilany of the heavy taxpayers desire a repeal. They any its cost occasions a heavy increase of taxation. The whole annual cost, we are informed. will nut Vl reed $B,OOO. As at present constituted it cannot exceed SS,OOO. The members of the Fir . ,ue from this county have the subject how in charge, and as they de cide probably the House will decide when the bill comer before them. It is entirely a local matter, anal will br left to the decision of the members from this county. To them communi cations, petitions, 6;.c., can be addressed some other matters contained in our corres pondent's letter Will be found of interest: such as the information relating to the tunnel and canal between Seventh street and the Monong,a beta river. THE REPEAL is AL LEGIIENY. —Yesterday after noun there waa,a very large mecitny in Allegheny city to express public sentiment in regal to the repeal of their grading and paving law?. 'The resolutions were adopted unanimously, and will be found in our local column. We have- seldom seen a community more excited aura the Alle ghenians are in relation to an act that had passed the Senate before they had heard l.f it. The repealing act is unjust, awl we hope it will lie defeated in the Rouse. The Allegheny city paving law is a good one, and should not be repealed. Sec the resolutions for the reasons clearly and forcibly expressed. IL. `Ii.WOOD ' S IfinnAzlNE for January is re ceived. A Difficulty in Dickinson College ji`nno the Cxrllel.• Domelerxt, Nth Quite a difficulty existed fur several days in the latter part of last and the beginning of the present week, between this faculty and students of Dickinson College, which for a time assumed a threatening aspect. It appears some three or four students were charged with offences, such us putting tar on the blackboards, &c., and dis pissed from the college. To this proceeding some seventy or more took exception and refused to attend to their college duties unless those who had Leen dismissed were re-instated. The facul ty- refusing to acquiesce in these demands, the students in a spirit of insubordination, held meet ings, made speeches and marched through the streets in a body. This state of affairs continued from Saturday until Tuesday, when the matter was fully adjusted, and the students resumed their duties.
