ports of-tbe President, James Anderson, Esg.; the.
Superiniendent, Thomas G. Rutherford; the Physi
cian, J. A. Reed, M. D.; and-tho Treasurer, :Joshua
IlaWna, Esq. *
The President states that since the opening of the
Institution on the 13th December, 1854, 143 inmates"
have been received, of whom 135 yet remain.. The
total cost of the buildings, lc., has beent9B,3BB 58;
en which 822,500 was received from counties in
Western Pennsylvania, $40,000 from the Sit. • and
$1‘7,632 individual subscriptiOnS, leaving a balance
of '510,204 nnprovided for, and fur which, of course,
the Institution is in debt.
Of the 143 children admitted to the Institution,
127 were from Armstrong, 3 from Beaver, ft from
Payette, and - 1 'each from Butler, Cambria, Mercer,
Somerset and Warren ; 104 were boys and 39 girls ;
4 have been returned to their friends, 1 sent to
Almshouse, 2 escaped and one Indentured.
The'female inmates under the very kind and hu
mane matron, Miss Ann Magee, and her much veined
nsiistant, Miss Martha DCWaughlin, bare Unproved
rapidly in morals and good deportment. All the
washing, ironing, cooking and tailoring of the In
stitution is done by the girls. The greater part of
the year, the boys were employed in improving the
premises. The large amount of grading done by
them has been u great saving to the resources of the
Institution. Twenty to thirty boys, during the past
summer, were almost constantly at work beyond the
wales. Thirty-two or them were also engaged in
making boots , aud shoes. Other :brunches. of 'labor
will he introduced as soon as practicable. The edu
cational progress of the inmates is spoken of as .
highly satisfactory. All the children receive, daily,
ut least four hours of instruction.
The Superintendent traces the groat majority of
commitments to the early loss of parents, and says
of the whole number of inmates received, 2.5 had
lost both parents previous to their admission into the
lioness; 28 their mothers 68 their fathers—in all,
111 h‘diest one or both parents by death. Those
committed were for the following offences ;—Lar
ceny 40; incorrigibility 67 ; vagrancy 2S ; prostitu
tion 7 ; malicious mischief 1.
We extract the following from the report of the
President, and commend it to the attention of those
who have contended that institutions of this char
acter were productive of no good
"It is gratifying, also to record that this Institu
tion exerts a sitlistivy effect upon the minds and de
porunent of siciously disposed youths without, as
well 06 those within eta precincts. There have been
instances of youths of the neighboring cities steeped
in crime, who have givers up their former evil habits,
nail sire now living obediently to the commands sf
their lawful guardians. The exiAtusivo.and well or
ganized band of youthful thieves that long infested
tin cities of Pittsburgh and Allegheny has been en-
tip.

INVENTIONS AND PATENTS
MATCH MACITINE.—This now invention is highly app
dated, and some sales of rights have been made on good
terms. Every one that sees the machine pronounces It one
of the most ingonious Inventions of the ago, and ono sure to
make the fortunes of those who engage in the business. The
trade is a very large one, and has heretofore furnished profit
able employment to many firms in this country. With this
now machine its profits can be doubled or trebled, and the
amount of capital required to do a largo business is very
small. There are fortunes In lt,and the people are evidently
finding it out.
