TI;ESLAY Matchicss Match 3 / a ching.—The company lately formed to commence the manufacture of matches will coon be in operation with the new and admirable ma shine lately invented for that purpose. There is nu doubt it will be one of the most successful and profi table brunches of business yet started in.this city. It wile require very little capital, and with the cheap ness with which the new machine will work it cannot fail to monopolize the market.. That market, too, is a large one. It was a profitable branch of business under the old mode of making matches. It will be trebly so with the new method. A machine of the kind can be seen at M. F. Eaton's, No. 80 Fourth street; and he can sell rights fur their use in any county in this State, or the Western States. The machine is worth looking at as a curiosity ; and any one with a small capital, and who wishes to make money fast, should call and see it. Assault on a Roman.—John Rafferty, the toll keeper on the Plank Road at Evergreen Hamlet, yes terday made information before Alderman Steel, against two mon named Charles and John Staekman, for beating his wife. He says that the men entered hie house, and without provocation, assaulted and boat both himself and wife. After the information was made, he came to the conclusion not to prosecute, and no warrants were issued. A (.',“e of Cmiscirrir..—Some time ago the Com missioners of Allegheny county received through the Post Office a package, directed to them, post marked Pittsburgh, January 12th, 1856, containing sixty-eight dollars in county scrip. The writer gave no name, explanation or advice. If there is any more where this came from, the Commissioners will have no objections to receive it on the same terms. Malicia. Misrhicf.—A fell6w familiarly known as '• Loafer" Bell was sent to jail yesterday, by Mayor Adams, for inhumanly cutting a horse's throat The offence was committed some months since, but, after a terrible tight with the police, he escaped at the time, and did not make his appearance in the city again until Sunday, when he was arrested. A .er;ea of resolutions were published in the patch yesterday, in relation to the Improvement of the Ohio River, as haring passed the Board of Trade. This was a mistake. They passed the Board of Di rectors, not the Board of Trade, and will be found in another column. Mr. Toombs said that the Board should have kept a record of its proceedings to show that the jurisdiction conferred had not been exceeded : wrong and injustice had been done by their de cisions, and no act of his should sanction their proceedings. Mr. Clayton defended the Board, but was will ing to correct the errors they have unintention ally committed. The President and Secretary of the Navy have the power to revise the action of the Board, and unless it was shown that the Board have exceeded their jurisdiction it was to be presumed that they had not. Mr. Benjamin contended that the Navy Board had not exercised any jurisdiction, but bad sim ply given their advice and opinion on the mat ters before them. Mr. Bayard Lad no imputations to make against a Board composed of honorable and meritorious men. The law under which they acted was the most barbarous ever passed by the legislature of anY civilized country. Ile recom mended the passage of an act authorizing the establishment of a Revising Board, composed of a majority of civilians. Mr. Crittenden believed it was perfectly com petent for Congress utterly to annul and abro gate the action of the Board, and make it as though it had never existed. After further debate the subject was post poned. Many bills were introduced principally for Internal Improvement, and one by Mr. Adam" , extending the terms of naturalization. On motion of Mr. Fisk, the Committee of Fi nance was instructed to inquire whether the smaller Spanish silver coins may not be removed from circulation. or have it value established by law to accord with their intrinsic value, and to avoid fractional parts of a cent.
