THE. SPEAKERSHIP
Without disparagement to the admitted merits
of other candidates, We believe that if the Demo

Hon. .1. Glancy Jones for Speaker his election
could be secured. For ability, character and
manners he it unobjectionable. He has no con

see not what more is expected by the AMerican
party from Fuller than from him. Neither are

have no serious objections to him on that kiund.
He is a national Democrat, not a northerfi man
with southern principles, but a sound statesman
with well settled principles, broad enough to or

whether a Whig, a Free Seiler, an American or a

shall have IL Congress at all to attend to the pub

The country now demands of their public ser

The American people are nut niggardly in

PEACE. IN Is:I:ROPE
The English people accuse the Americans of
excitability, yet they seem to be getting quite as
ex.:itable themselves. A few words over the tel
egraph wires vet all London in commotion.
The funds rise ; there is a panic in the grain
market ; and a general commotion iu all rank , of
society. The late exciting topic is the peace
q uestion. In our telegraph columns will be
found the Arabia's news, which after all gives no
good promise of peace
Russia, it is said, accept. , the Austrian propo
sitions as the basis of negotiation.. That means
merely that they will have another conference
which may re-tilt just as unsuccessfully as the
loot Itir , sia, thereby' gains time to strengthen
her defences, double her armies, an d t0t!C11.,..n to
Ler adversaries n cost of a hundred millions
more of gold. To protract the war and exhaust
the Allies is II main feature of Russian policy.
and diplomacy is about a. effectual for that ns
tortitications. Thu terms proposed by Austria
are not such a , Russia can accept with honor
They imply a loss of territory ; a loss of naval
power in the Black sea ; n loss of many of the
defences of her southern coast : and an end of
all her protection to the Greek population of
Turkey. No such terms will be submitted to.
and any offer to negotiate with them it , a hasi ,
must have in view delay. not pence So the
English seem to think : yet they still entertrun
hopes that the war mac soon he brought to R
close. In diplomacy and in war the Russians
find no toasters yet in Europe. Their leaders
are as wise in council as they are tletertnine , l in
the bathe field and fortifications. No better
evidence need tie sought of the respect felt for
the power and ability of the colossal empire of
the north than that England, France and Turkey
combined feel inadequate for its humiliation, and
endeavor earnestly to draw all ;other nations to
their aid. And some of those other nations,
though desiring the humiliation of Russia, dare
not involve themselves in the mighty contest.

learn from the Now York Tribune. His name is
on paper to the amount of $850,000, to raise
which it would require the sacrifice of property
belonging to him valued at $1,000,000. He is
trying to compromise the matter and has offered

In the State Senate, on NVednesday, the Com

The Harrisburg Patriot and Union publishes
the sentiments of the press of Pennsylvania ou

to the art.

Superintendent of the St. Louis Work liom-e.
having been charged with a number of misde

referred by the Councils to n joint committee.
This committee have reported as well founded

one of corruptly appropriating to his own use
that which was intended for the support of in
mates of the workhouse: of brutal and inhuman
treatment to two prisoners under his charge;
with keeping his eon as a guard of the work
house when he knew the said son was in tie

‘• The whole question of our diplomatic rela

Urn. Lewis Cass, the father of the Senate; and
when 1 say he made the greatest speech which
ever fell from his lips I only express the opinion
of hi-, brother Senators and of all who had the
pleasure of listening to hi+ eloquent defence of
American diplomacy and American honor. This
speech, I am pleased to say, will first appear in

After the conclusion of his remarks, Senators

Tut: St Eau PLANTERS of Louisiana have been
holding a Convention in New Orleans for the
purpose of counselling together and agreeing on
some plan by which they could rid the sugar trade
of existing incumbrances. More than a hundred
delegates were present from various portions of
the State. In taking the chair as President, the
lion. John Moore delivered an interesting-;<d
dress, in which he stated the crop of 184 ; 6 at
346,1;35 hogsheads of sugar, and 577,840 I,**4
of molasses, and the crop of 1855-Btal tISTOKIO
hogsheads of sugar and 350,000 barrels of mo
lasses. He asserted that adequate facilities for
the transaction of this trade were not furnished
by the city authorities of New Orleans. This
deterred him and other planters from sending
their crop to that market, and he urged that,
unless proper accommodations were furnished
there, the planters would be obliged to combine
and establish a new depot somewhere else. A
committee was appointed to consider and report
on the subject.
1411.1,100 ASSOC I ATIONS. —The large amount
of money invested in these concerns, has di
rected the attention of ninny political econo
mists and financiers to their theory, principles,
and practical workings. A person in Connecti
cut, some months ago, offered a handsome re
ward fur the solving of certain problems con
nected with the subject, and by this means, he
was soon furnished with a mass of calculations,
which would have occupied an accomplished
mathematician at least three years in perfecting.
By this Yankee trick, he procured matter enough
for a large work on the subject, which is now in
press. It appears that, in Connecticut alone,
there are twelve millions of dollars of stock and
about three millions of dollars of deposites in
volved in these institutions,
