PITTSBURGH POST• FRIDAY MORNING - . Lard and other Provisions. The Baltimore Patriot of Tuesday gives place to the following communication which, it says, comes from a source which chtitles it to confi dence, and will therefore be found worthy of a careful perusal by those engaged in the Provi. sion trade. Supposing the crop of Hogs killed in the country to be no greater than last season, the same number of hogs this will produce at least one-third more lar.l than last season; the cause of this is, that last years corn was extremely scarce and the hogs wore imperfectly fatted, whereas this season there was a superabundance of corn and the hogs were as fat as corn could make them. Any one observing the hogs Com ing into Baltimore and Cincinnati, will be con vinced that this estimate of one-third is not too large. The Beef crop, as killed this season, is known to lie larger than last season, and the quality is very fat, compared with last season, and the consequent increase in weight of tallow must be considerable, probably amounting to 50,000 bar rels Sheep and other kinds of small stock are fat this season, owing to the same causes. This increase, apparently small! when aggregated , for whole enntrtry is n not:wider - LW - 0 The Lard nnnually produced in dhe>whole c.nintry, in the killing. season. is about 350,1100 catch of \rico, oil which came into the wari about :310,000 barrels; in last year it was Isil, ollo barrels, and the accounts lately receiving from the Sandwich Is_ land, of returning whalers, indicate that the quantity coming in the present year, will ap proach in quantity; in other words, will be at least 100,000 barrels more than last season. This stock will be in addition to - nearly 40,000 barrels left over and now nn hand.. There is no evidence that Europe will want more lard, tallow, and kindred articles, than last year. On the contrary, most of the circu lar 4 report hogs and cattle in Great Britain as uncommonly fat and the high price of grain thciie has cancel an unusual quantity of the stock to he killed off. This was indicated in the low price at which the English Government eon tracts for beef and pork were taken, and the war with Russia has been found to be no bar to the. exports of tallow from that country—the only difference being, the consumers have hail to pay land insteml of water transportation. The present flute quotations in England for lard and tallow will deceive no prudent merchant or skilful shipper. It has taken hut a few weeks to cause prices to decline near two cents it pound here. The same. tiling will probably occur on the first considerable arrival there. Last season the foreign exports of lard from here commenced on a notoriously short crop, at 94 1 cents a ponnil, and the great. bulk of exports went out at that, and a little higher: the present season, on a notoriously full crop at 11a12 cents. The tendency of this will be to check exports and Consumption, and its effect disastrous to this staple of the country. The above facts and deductions go strongly to show that lard, this season, is not worth as much per pound as it was last season, and any attempt to sustain present prices must result k disastrously to those who attempt it. Annual Report of the Whale Fishery. We arc indebted to the New Bedford IV hale meals' Skipping Lie for the following abstract in relation to the whale fishery: The importations of sperm oil fall short of those of 185.1 four thousand and forty-seven barrels, and of whale oil one hundred and thirty. five thousand eight hundred and twenty-two bar rels, or nearly one-half. The price of oils has steadily increased, the average of sperm for the past year being 177 *2-10 cents, against 1481 cents for sperm, and ih cents for whale, in 1864. The present prices must necessarily he sustained in consequence of the increased rates of every article renhire'l in the fitting of ships, or the business cannot be pursued without disastrem: consequences to those engaged in it. The success of the Northern fleet, as far as heard from, (including about one-half which have arrived at the Sandwich Islands and elsewhere) has been generally fair—particularly those in the tlehotsk and Japan seas; while the very few in the Arctic have done comparatively nothing— and it would seem its it' the whaling in the latter was exhausted, as the two last seasons have prove.l complete failures. The sperm whalers in the Pacific and elsewhere have done fairly, and this is about all that Can be said of them, rind it is but fair to conclude that the importations of 1:1r,li will certainly not exceed, but fall short, of those of the previous year, many of the ships to arrive having previously shipped home their oil. The total number of veaselsemployed in the whale fishery does not materially differ front that of the previous year—being now 1;35 against 1;:IS in showing a falling otr of three, and a dimi nution of 701 tons. The number of veek and the amonnt of ton nage o a, ptoyed in the whale fishery since 1t. 1 14, have bcon as follows: Shipy.k. narks. Cries. Schooners Toms e. In 1e.50, aceerding to the United States census, the population was 851,170 ; in 185.7 i, according to the State census, it, was 1,300,2.51—an increase of 115,781, or nearly 53 per cent. in five years. This is owing chiefly to the sudden construction of a vast sys tem of railroads, which covers the whole territo ry and opens up the vast and fertile prairies ren dering access to market easy, and inviting Muni gration. The railroads, too, have cost the inhab itants little, their construction in n country of level plains being easy, and the grants of lands by Congress enabling the companies, to pay for most of the lands without expense to the stoeli holders. In this respect Illinois has been favor ed beyond all other States, and she is reaping Ithe results of it, in an amazing increase in •her inhabitants and an immense advance in her pro ductions and wealth.—Cunimings . Take the mile measulke. for instance: in England and the United States, a mile means 1760 yards; in the Netherlands, it is 1993 yards; ' while iu Germany it is 10,120 yards, or nearly six English miles ; in France it is 3025 yards. The Scotch mile is 1964 yards, and the Irish' 036 yards. The Spanish mile is 2172 yards; and the Swedish mile 11,700 yards. These are computed in English yards; hut. the yard itself, of three feet in length, has divers significations in differ ent places. The English yard is itti inches; the French 39.13 inches; the Geneva yard 87.60; the Austrian 37.38; the Spanish yard 33.01; the the Pnrssian 86.57; the Russian 39.51.
