Lunn PALMERSTuN AND VieTult IlLtlu.—Du
mas tells a suggestive iinecdote o prop., to Victor
llugo's exclusion from Jersey. The prolific
novelist was seated One evening it a fashionable
Parisian reunion, conversing with the author of
Notre Dame and liernani, when a friend brought
him a pulite message from Llird Palmerston, who
was one of the guests, asking, as a special favor,
that he would abandon his seat for a few mo
ments fur the one adjoining ; Dumas assented.
whereupon his lordship conducted Lady Palmer
ston to the vacant chair, and badu her note the
hour. '•lt is exactly thirty-five minutes after
ten," said her ladyship. .•Well, my lady," re
sponded Palmerston, ••remember that un this
day, at thirty-five minutes after ten e. 31,, you
were seated between Victor Hugo and Alexander
Dumas ; it is such an honor as you have never
enjoyed in your life." "rWas a anon to sit a
moment beside whom was a memorable honor,
by the tergiversation of political anomalies, who
is, by the same voice, pronounced a vulgar
genius, and little better than a brigand, and ig
nominiously hunted from the English soil :
A city broker, famous for his shrewdness, took
a trip by railroad the other day, and sat down at
the end of the train, because," said he, the
u,e or the money is worth something while the
eotoluetor is coming through the cars.-
