It had been repeatedly alleged by the Black
Republican party of the House of Repregenta
iives that the ttemeerata were chargeable with
th e re , pow.ibility of keeping it unarganized, for
the reason that, aided by the friends of Mr.
Fuller and the scattering vote, they always ad
journed after a session of usual length., and gave
no opportimity to bring. certain outsiders to the

not have even this shadow of a charge under
which to relieve themsel wee, from responsibility,
the imam:rats agreed to oppose an adjournment,
and to give a full opportunity to the majority of
the Ilouse to make an election amt bring certain

own course, determined, apparently, to slick by
its lag to the last. Each seems impressed with
the importance of the principles in,cribed upon
the flag under which it is arrayed, and tteither
can yield without political destruction. Such is
a superficial view of parties in the [louse. But
a close examination discloses the fact that while

ceuveying information with regard to the war
and its prtriress, have scarcely produced a sen
sation. the late arrivals announcing, the fall of
liars and its capture by the Russians, has again
directed attention to the war. This success of
Russia is regarded as nearly, if riot quite, equal
izing the results of the rampaign of 1855, the
eapture of this gateway to Constantinople, and
prisoners, being of more consequence
to Russia than the loss of cue-half of Sebasto
pol. It is probable that the Russian army will
continue the campaign this winter and push on
towards Trebisond, only 100 miles distant, the
mo t importitnt sea-port on the Turkish coast of
the Black sea, and the point through which the
trade between Western Europe and Persia
passes. If peace negotiations are opened this
winter, this success will enable Russia CO par
ticipate in them after achieving tin important
!Zlleeess, and while in possession of a consider:l.
tile portion of territory belonging to Turkey-
Besides, the number of prisoners taken is four
times the number of Russians captured by the
Allies during flit whole war, and are so many
livino trophies of Russian success. An effort is
making to bring about a peace; Napoleon de
sires it; England is not averse to it. and Russia
will not be disinclined to its establishment, it'

Loss of Life by Worm.
We have seen it sometimes remarked, In refer
ence to the loss of life in the Orioles, that certain
battles were among the bloodiest ever fought,
the sacrifice ,of life the greatest, &e. But, such
writers either forget, or certainly know very lit
tle about ihe terrible battles fought in former
times, and even of a comparatively recent date,
and within the memory of persons living. Let
us notice some of these.
At the battle of Arcola the Austrians lost, in
killed and wounded, 18,000 men ; the French,
15,000.
At Ilohenlinden The Austrian loss was 14,000;
the Preach, 9;000h
eft Au.Wertitz, the Attlee, out of 80.000.,men,
lost ;,;(1,000 in killed and wounded or prisoners ;
the Frew!ll loss only (I) 12,000.
At Jena and Au rstailt the Prussiansiost 30,-
000 men,• killed and wounded, and nearly nv
many prisoners, making nearly 60,000 in all ;
and the French 14,000 in killed and wounded.
At the terrific battle of I , ;e/lau, the Russians
lost 2''(,1100 in killed and wounded; and the
French, 30,0(0.
At Prirdiand the Russian loss was 17,000, in
killed an. wont - idea—the Freud!' hms,..-43,0tHi
At Wagram the A usillall:i and French lost
eac h Itr,,Lal men, or :,(1,000 in all, in killed and
wounded.
At Smolenski the French logs was 17,000 men
—that of the Ituasians, 10,0011,
At Borodino, which is said to have been 1 6 the
most murderous and obstinately fought battle on
record," the French Met in kii!cin, - wounded and
prisoners, 544,000 ripen —the RIIPSIIIII/3 about the
same number, making , in all 100,4_11./0 -men iii one
battle!
At Lut:rn the French loss was 14,000 men—
the Allies, 15,f100.
At Bautz,w the French lost 2b,000 men—tho
.1,7),000.
Prezden, where the battle lasted two days,
the Allies lost in killed, wounded and prisoners,
25,000 men; and the French, between 10,000 end
12,000.
At Leipsic, which lasted three days, Napoleon
lost two Marshals, twenty Generals, and about
60,000 men, in killed, wounded and prisoner
the Allies, 1,790 officers, and about 4b,000 men
—upwards of 100,11,00 men in all!
At Ligny, the Prussians lostls, oootnen inkill
ed, wounded and prisoners; the French 13,800.
The battle of reethio lasted three days; and
the French and Allies lust each about 12,000 men,
or 1,000 in all.
Here We have battles, among which are some,
-compared to which those in the Crimea were
but small engagements, great as they appear to
us. Besides these were several others of minor
importance to the foregoing, as to the loss of men,
lout large in the aggregate. There were those
'of the 'Bridge of Lodi, a most desperately contes
ted" tight-- , -the famous baffle' of the bile, a sea
fight, in which Nelsovolest 895 men in !Filled and
wounded ; and the French 5,2,2 h. men in killed
and wounded, B,oosTrisoners, and 13 out of 17
ships engaged in the action—that of the Bay
of Aboukir, where the French had 8,000 men en
gaged, and the Turks 9,000; alid every man of
the Turks was lost, in killed, wounded and pris
oners—Yopi—Engers—Mareve, a most desper
ate and bloody engagement. Maids, where tho
French, out of 7,500 men engaged, lost - about
4,800 in killed, wounded and prisoners. Talave
ra, another famous and bloody engagerapnb—Al
lm..ra, where the British, out of 7,500 men en
gaged, lost 4, 309—Sa idni a lie a— I los( a —ro u
louse—Paris and qaatre Bras.
In all these battles, the loss in killed and
wounded, on all sides, was at least a Alma - on of
men besides thousands in skirmishes, minor en
gagements, &c., and that within a period of less
than thirty years: Enormous as is this loss and
injury of life,—of those who fall in battle and
are maimed by wounds,--it is but small com
paml to the loss of life caused otherwise by war.
The numbers killed and wounded in battle,"
sacs a writer," are, no full index to the loss of
life in war, and seldom comprise one-fourth of its
actual ric/im.i.." It is small compared to the im
mense numbers carried off by disease, exposure,
and other casualties incident to war.
Allison says of the campaign of 1799: " In
a little more than fair mAth.l the French and
Allied armies had lost nearly half of their collec
tive forces; those cut off, or irrecoverably muti
lated by the sword, being about 116,000 men."
And, •• the survivors of the French army from
the Russian eampai! , n, were not more than 35,-
(100 men, out of au army of about 500,000 men l"
Such are the curses of war! it is the greateM
calamity that can befall a nation, and more to be
dreaded than plague, pestilence Or famine. if
it has any advantages, they are of such character
as the hurricane or earthquake produce in na
ture—more of a negative than of a positiv char
acter—in the destruction of tyrannical govern
ments, and old time-worn political systems of
error and oppression. War should he a (fernier
in : and a nation should submit to almost
any evil rather than engage in one.
(tit the '2, - ,111 the Proneh and 'English in
sae Eraneiseo gave n grand entertainment iu
h,mor of the recent victories of the allies in the
Crimea. The principal addresses and re Dor'',
passed ell' very well. but, at the table, where is
whole ox roasted was to ho served out, the ear
ver:l didn't work quick enough for the impatient
appetite of the crowd, awl confusion began.
'then a huge representation, in cake, fifteen feet
high, of the Malakoff and Redan was to be at
tacked and overcome. This was attempted with
the same result as the other. It was thrown
upon the gromnl, when the ckt , ris were attacked
by the standard hearers of all nations, the Amer
lean dug being among those which were attempt
ed to he planted among its ruins. The air be
came tided with showers of biscuit and loaves of
hread pelted from all directions. This novel
bombardment was kept up for some time, and
scented to be participated in by the representa
tives of alt nations. As a sort of variation to
this performance, a trussed turkey or roast
crackling might be seen describing erratic
courses across the pavillion. Greasy pieces of
pork came in violent contact with bald, uncov
ered pates ; the flying edibles being in Rome in
stances caught in their career, and the missiles
returned in like manner with an unction truly
refreshing. All this, however, was given and re
ceived in good part. In the meantime it WIL9 ob
served that the French flag, which was-one of the
many festooning the roof of the pavillion, was
lower than the English. A frantic Frenchman
shinned up to the ridge pole, and tearing the flag
away from the place where it had been witted,
carried it to a more elevated position: This was
the signal for a general rush, and several English
man-of-war's-men mounted to the roof from the
inside, and soon placed the tea -cross- above its
rival. These feats were attended with deafening
cheers front the numerous partisans of the Rags;
and front this time all attempts at speech-making
ur reporting were resigned as hopeless. And now
some ill-advised American, elevated with cham
pagne, scrambled to the roof, and dislodging tile
American, held it far above the otheth, while
another, reaching the sante position from the
outside, cut a hole through the eantass, and
reselling through reared the United States flag
above the tent, amid the yells, groans, cheers,
hisses, praises and execrations of the spectators.
This seencontinued for some time, until the roof
was covered with sailors and others, and the
western end of the fabric being overloaded, fell
with a loud crash to the earth, putting the or
chestra, which was immediately beneath, to flight.
The ball in the evening was dispensed with, as
the lamps were broken by the excited and ter-
Itulent crowd. The whole affair ended in a card
of regrets and a general exoneration of all par
ties front blame, particularly the Americans.
