LOCAL AFFAIRS.
MONDAY MORNING
Terrific Explosion.—On Saturday morning, about
five o'clock, the people living adjacent to the corner
of Grant and Third streets, were aroused from their
slumbers by the shock of an explosion, which shook
the houses for several squares tiround, and created
the impression that an earthquake, at least, had oc
curred. Ou rushing out, it was discovered that the
house on the northwest corner of Third and Grunt
streets, the lower story of which was occupied as a
second hand store by a colored man named John
Brown, was on fire, and that the noise had been
caused by an explosion in his store. It appears that
a leakage of the gas pipe had occurred, and the col
tar and store room were tilled with the escaped gas.
At the hour mentioned abuse he entered the store
room for the purpose of opening up, nod •10 4 iog - the
door behind him, struck a light without discovering
that the room was full of gas. The consequences
may easily be imagined. A terrific explosion took
place, and ho was precipitated into the cellar and so
badly injured as to leave but little Lotus of his re
covery. The doors and windows were blown out;
the floor destroyed, even the joists being broken in
pieces, and the contents of the store set on lira. In
the upper stories of the house the mantles wore also
thrown out of their places and broken; the doors
forced off their hinges, the windows destroyed, and
every thing turned upside down. On the opposite
side of the street the windows in Mr. Green's house
were broken by the concussion, and the furniture
disarranged.
The noise of the explosion MIS tremendous, being
heard for it number it ; it is described as
tworing some resemblance to a ilbeliarge of artillery.
It seems almost a minute that the vlorotl man
Brown mini not killed, ua the heavy timherA on which
the floor rested were 1 , 1,.ea 11-11.$ fragments

with him. A foe itioh brit k wall, between the eel
