The it intensity of the cold for tLe
past few days has boon unequalled here for many
winters. Yesterday morning, at G o'clock, the

mometer indicated the temperature to be 13 degree. ,
below zero, while at 12 o'clock M., it woo mill 11)
degrees below. In the afternoon it moderated a lit
tle, and the mercury went up to zero, at which point,
it stood until evening.
The present sudden and almmt unparalleled cold
weather sets hard upon the extreme poor in our city,
and we have them always with us. There are many,
and the least chin:wow for.lelief are, perhaps the
most deserving at present, suffering for coal, clothing
and food. The time is suggestive of charity. and
we hope the generous and humane will rcsi, , ,nd
all proper calls.
