But their candidate has been elected by far less than a majociti , of the votes polled; and the vote was a small one.. The very severe cold weather re duced the : vete of all parties no doubt. The next fact is that Mr. Irwin, the Democratic cal/didu4, is,Ahe. next highest in the poll; and Bingham's majority over him is not large, con sidering the number of candidates. Our citizens are now satisfied of what was repeatedly said by us before, the election, that the contest was be tweenlrarin and Bingham ; and that every vote cast for Volz, or for Long, was thrown away. Another fact is apparent. Had Irwin's offer Leenaccepted, and Irwin, Volt and Long volun tarily-withdrawn, a new man could bare been put, in, the, ffeld, either Whig or Democrat, and elected by a large majority. Such was Irwin's oiler. Long would have accepted it; but Volz refused. On him rests the blame of the result. Again : Irwin's vote is larger than Volt's . He thou was the choice of the majority of the anti-Know Nothings. Notwithstanding Volz's long, call, and the recommendation of the twenty delegates, Irwin beate him. This fact, as well as the large and enthusiastic meeting of the evening before, sustains and fully justifies us in the C:31.11%9C we took in the contest. The Post is sustained by the vote of a large majority of the party to which it belongs Another fact seems , to be deducible from the result. It is that a large majority of democrats are tired of fusion," while it is made to mean that either Volt. or a K. N. must be elected Mayor year after year, We have a ohauge in the Mayor's office at any rate, and a respectable gentleman is elected to the office. We havei but one further remark. Probably hardly any other democrat could have been found in the city that would have polled so large a vote as John M. Irwin has done under the cir stances. Had he been nominated by the Con vention be would have be - en elected. No credit has heretofore bean given to tra ditions of the ancient Egyptians and Chinese, according to which these people formerly said the sun's disc was almost four times as large as we now see it, for they estimated the apparent diameter of the sun as double of what it is seen in bur day. If, however, we pay attention to the continued dimunition of the apparent diameter of the sun, according to the best observation of several centuries, we must suppose that the an cients were not mistaken in the estimates they have transmitted to us.
