MONDAY MORNING
A great many years ago—two-and-twenty years
to-night—l well remember what a cold, wet
night it was, with a thick sleet driving against
the windows, and a melancholy, moaning -wind
creeping through the leafless branches. It had
been quite a sad winter time to us at home—the
only sad one I had ever known, for it was just
two ur three weeks after the accident had hap
pened that first laid me on my couch, and only a
few days before, my father had told me I should
never he able to rise from it any more. It had
been a heavy blow to us all.
We sat together in the drawing.room all the
long evening, toy father, and my mother, and I—
my sister Kate had gone the day before to some
friends of ours in the country. One gets so soon
used to misfortunes and disappointments when
just a
. little time has passed; but, at the first,
they are often so hard to bear, and I think that
never, at any time, did I feel such sorrow at the
thought that I must be an invalid my whole life
as I did that night. I was only a girl—nut fif
teen yet ; and at that age we are so full of bright
dreams about the future, looking forward with
such clear, joyous hopefulness to the world that
is just beginning to open before us, stretching
out our hands so eagerly to the golden light that
ire think we see in the far distance. It was so
hard to have the bright view shut out forever, to
have all the hopes that to me 1111 , 1 made the
thought of life so beautiful, torn from me forever
in one moment.
ATWELL, LEE A ED.
I had borne the knowledge of it all quite
calmly at first ; it was only now that I thought I
really felt and knew all that I was losing. But,
thank God, my life has nut been what in my faith
lessness I thought, that night, it would be;
thank God, that the whole bitterne s s of those
few hours' thought has never cants to OW us it
did then, again.
Early in the evening my father had been
reading to us aloud ; but since he ceased, no
word had Leen spoken in the room. Ile had
been writing for the last two hours: my mother,
sitting by the fire, was reading. The whole
house was Eilent; and front without, the only
sounds that came to us were the wind howling
through the trees, and the cold rain dashing on
the windows—both cheerless sounds enough to
hear. It was indeed a night for melancholy
thoughts; and to one ill and weak as I was
then, perhaps it was to be forgiven that, think
ing of the future and the past, looking back
upon the happy days that were gone, and for
ward to where the sunles-s clouds hung so heavily,
I should scarcely be able to press back the tears
that tried to blind Inc.
MEM
For when we are very young we shrink so from
feeling prison-bound: we pray .=” earne-tly, that
if sorrow most come to ta , n, it may rather
burst in sudden storm upon 11,3, and paksin^
away. have the blue sky clear again, than that
our whole life shout li, wrapped op hi a cold
gray shroud. through which M. deep -orrow C,lll
,•ser pit-roe lOW our liVllr--no d,•e•p jcy ever
cone to gladden
And in that gray shroud I th,ought that my life
uao to lie hidden and-withered ; and now, while
yet it was only closing over tne--while with
passionate resistance. I would still have •truggled
to tear it back, 1 felt that inn hand+ were hound.

shall never forget what a poor little object it

--just a turn old frock that would hardly hang

at WS were all bare, mid wet with the heavy rain.
Iler pretty fair hair was wet too, hut her face
was what astonished and attracted me most, it
was glowing like fire, with a spot of the bright
est scarlet ou each cheek, and her large bine

painful to look at them. Yet such a sweet face
it was.
My mother made her kneel beside me on m 3

though she was certainly more than two years
old, she remained us perfectly unmoved as though
she had been a little statue, only those great
bright oyes wore fixed upon my face, until I be
gan to get absolutely frightened at her.
In about twenty minutes my father returned
from his useless search.
Wo can do nothing more to-night," he said.
in a tone of considerable vexation, as he joined
us again. " Poor child, she's very feverish in
deed ; why, exposure on such a night is enough
to kill her. My love, you must put her to bed ;
there's no help fin- it, and I'll see what I can to
for her. But really it's a little too intich to ex
pect that all the sick children of the neighbor
hood are not only to be cured for nothing, but to
be housed too, by the physician." And my•
father left the room, to change his wet garments,
in no very contented state of mind.
My mother put out her hands to lift the
child from my side, and then for the first time a
moaning sound broke front her, and leaning for
ward she caught my dress with her little hands,
and heldit tight. half crying, as if she feared to go
away. 1 pressed her to me, and clasped nay
arms around her. I could'nt 'help it—and she
let me do it, and laid down her head upon my
bosom, the dear child ! with that plaintive moan
ing sound again. I was almost weeping myself,
half -with pity, half with love—for I loved her
SU much already, as we love all things that cling
to us, all things that—weaker than ourselves—
appeal to us for protection. And so, for I could
not bear that against her will she should be made
to leave me, still keeping her in lily arms,.l had
the couch wheeled into my bedroom; and there,
iu Rate's bed we laid her, poor little weary suf
fering thing.
it would be too long to tell you all about her
illness, for she was ill for many weeks; how pa
tient she was; how anxious we all were fur her;
how, in spite of n few cross words at first, my
kind father tended her with as much care as ever
he bestowed upon his wealthiest patient ; how
my dear mother sat up night after night with
her, as thringh she had been her own child; how
the little thing crept so into all our hearts, that
when at last one evening my father pronounced
her out of danger, even his voice was broken
wAh emotion, and we were fairly crying—both
my mother and I.
Nor will 1 trouble you with an account of all
the fruitless search that was
came
to discover
who sthe was or where she came from, but one
tlhing I must mention, because it perplexed us
very much, and added to our difficulty in deci , .
ding how to dispose of her. It wats.thisi. that,
we began to suspect—what at first never entered
our heads—that she had been stolen, and. was
not a poor woman's child. It was her own dim
recollections of past things that gave rise to this

at the State. Department from the American i consul
at Shanghai, giving a statement of the relatike im
portance of the five ports of China open to our com
merce, by which it will be seen that recent political
events hare contributed to establish the superiority
of Shanghai over the older commercial dePots be
lonuing to that country—Foochow ' Amoy, Kingpo
aniCanton. The consul predicts that, with; proper
attention on the part of the governMericonimerce
equal to that of Calcutta will hedeveloped at Shanghai.
The second document is the manifesto issued by
the Director of. Customs of the Chinese government
at Shanghai, for the equalization of the corrOncy nt
that port. It appears that the old Spanish or Carolus
duller has, by some management, brought a pt , eminm
of about thirty per cent. among the tradert there,
and two English houses and one American hate been
accustomed to do a large business out of the credulity
of the Chinese country traders, who preferred!, it even
to more valuable ooin, by the manufacture of it. In
this decree the Director endeavors to infuse more
enlightened notions into his people, byadvising them
to consider the weight and purity of the money, and
not its stamp and form. This shows some progress
among the Celestial officials, but it may be presumed
that. the penalty he imposes upon speculators in coin
will prove more effective in China than it would in
this country.
For the promulgation of this edict, and for other
commercial facilities, the merchants of this Country
aro principally indebted to the efforts of Mr.ltobert
C. Murphy, U. S. Consul at Shanghai.

THE TREATIES Milt JAPAN—JAPANESE FECAOD.—
A recent article in the Ui/Liu! Gazctte of the Nether
lands has created some sensation in India. jlt ap
pears to have escaped attention in Europe. Itiis well
understood that the treaties recently signed by the
Julianiie government with the American and Eritish
commissioners are frauds. Trade is no more permit
ted than before_ No one is allowed to [nude but the
imperial agents, who again will sell only precisions.
All communication • with the interior is prohibited,
and. in fact, both nations are precisely whe/e they
were. It appears from the Dutch statement that ail
these deceptions were suggested from the Ilague
that a Dutch official, specially selected, was lent to
Japan, and that he has since acted as a kind of for
eign secretary to the imperial government. ;These
facts arc. indeed. admitted by the King himself,
whose notes on the treaty have been publiehiA. and
they appear to deserve. it not chastisement, at leant
attention. The Dutch in the East are jealous in the
extreme of Anglo-Simon influence, and by no means
scrupulous iu their endea.vors to undermine it- M.

—Somebody has found a mystery in the simple
arithmetical fact that to multiply by 2 is the same
as -to multiply by 10 and divide by 2. Any num
ber of figures you may wish to multiply by 5 will
give the same result if divided by much
quicker operation than the'former ;, but you must
remember to annex a cypher to:the answer when
there is no remainder, and when there is a re-
maiader annex a 5 to the answer. MUltiply 464
by 5, the answer will be 2,320; divide the same
number by 2, atd you have 232, and as there is•
no remainder, you add a cypher.. Now, take 357
and multiply by 5, the answer is 1,785. CM: di
viding this by 2, there is 178, and no remainder;
you therefore place a 5 at the end of the line,
and the result again is 1,785. There is some
thing more curious in the - properties of the num
ber 9. Any number multiplied by 9, produces a
stein of which figures added continually together
make 9. For example, all the first multiplies of
9, as 18,27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, sent up to 9.
Each of them multiplied by any number what
ever, produces a similar result; as 8 times 81
are 648, these figures added together make 18,
and lis 9. Multiply 648 by itself, the product
is 119,904—the sum of these digits is 27, and 7
and 2 are 9. The rule is invariable, take any
number whatever and multiply it by 9, or any
multiple of 9, and the sum will consist of figures,
which added together ,continually number 9—as
17X18=306--,6 and 3 are 9 ;117X27-,--. -- -3,159, the
figures sum up 18, b and 1 are, 9; 4,591X72=
330,552, which added together produces as be
fore 18, or 8 :tpd lis 9. Again, 87,683X54=
4,735,422, add together, the product is 27, 2 and
7 are 9, and so universally.
—A certain Infanta of Spain, remembering
that a large army of , horse soldiers raised by the
king, her father, had been defeated by, the Sawa

by their aid completely overcame the enemy.
Hence the term Infantry. Before this peridd, foot
soldiers had not been held in great estimation ;

and Roma. The Spanish' foot-eoldie'rs long

—The practice of blueing the paper pulp had
its origin in a singularly accidental circumstance,
which, not merely as a historical fact,. but as
forming an amusing anecdote, is, perhaps, worth
mentioning. It occurred about the year 1780 ;
at a paper mill belonging to Mr. • Buttonshaw,
whose wife, on the occasion in question,,was su
perintending the washing
. of some linen, when
accidentally she dropped her bag of powdered
blue into the midst of some - pulp in a forward
state of preparation, and so great *att the fear
she entertained of the mischief she had done,
seeing the blue rapidly amalgamated with the
pulp. that all allusion to it was studiously avoid
ed ; until, on Mr. lint tonshaw's inquiring in great
astonishment what it was that had imparted the
peculiar color to the pulp, his wife, perceiving
that no great damage had been done, took cour
age, and at once disclosed the secret ; for which
she was afterwards rewarded in a remarkable
manner by her husband, who being naturally
pleased with an advance of so much as four shill
ings per bundle, upon 'submitting the improved
make to the Londonmarket, immediately purcha
sed ri costly scarlet cloak, (somewhat more con
genial to taste in these days, it is presumed, than
it would be now,) which he presented with much
satisfaction to the sharer of his joy.— Herring

—The date or origin of glass is not known, but
it is supposed that the first glass works of anti
quity were established at Diospalis,- the capital
of the Egyptian Thebiad; and it is asserted that
the Egyptians carried the art of making, cutting,
and even staining glass, to a very high degree of
perfection. Glass, as is well known, is made by
mixing silicious earth or sand, alkaline substan-
stances, and metallic oxides at. a white: heat.
Silicia is its base. Flints and quartz are_ some
times employed, and redueed - lepoWder by being
heated hot, and then thrown into hot water; pot
a_.:h and soda supply the requisite amount of al
kali lime and borax are also added, and the
deutoxide of lead is the metallic• oxide most gen
erally used. Though the component parts of
glass are opaque, perfect transparency is pro
duced by means of combination.
—J. 11. Johnson. of London, has obtained apatent
fur preparing old leather scraps to render them fit to
lie made into glue. The leather is first chopped into
small pieces and thoroughly wnshod, then placed in
vats, where it is digested with potash or sods. It is
taken out, after a few hours, and subjected to pres
sure, and again immersed in a stronger alkaline so
lution for some hours, whinh processes remoreull the
tannic acid. It isnow taken out and sashed well
with water, and submitted to a steep of a very weak
sulphuric acid for twenty-four hours, to remove all
the coloring matter. This being accomplished, it is
again submitted to a weak alkaline solution of the
carbonate of 50..., then washed in water, and is fit
to be made into glue by the common process.'
