ROD called. Members present—Messrs. Alexander,
Clarke, Drum, Jones, Loomis. Lytle, Kier, Murdoch,
Pollock, Taylor, Weaver, Smith, Cordell.
The President stated the object of the meeting. to
be to take into consideration the report of the Fi
nance Committee relative to the lease of the Pitts
burgh and Steubenville Railroad.
Mr. Clarke, from the Pinan'ee Committee, said the
Committee was not ready to report, as the subject
was one of such magnitude as to require longer time
to investigate it.
The Committee, however. had ascertained with
certainty that the Railroad Company could nut meet
the interest of the city bonds due on first of January,
and to preserve the credit of the city, offered an
ordinance authorizing a loan of S 16,5011 to meet that
interest, '
Mr. Loomis said he would cordially favor the pas
sage of the ordinance, but wanted to know from whom
the Committee had ascertained the interest could not
be paid.
Mr. Clarke replied that the information came from
the officers of the company.
Mr. Alexander wanted to know whether the money
could be raised if the ordinance was passed.
Mr. Clarke said the Committee entertained no
doubt a loan could to negotiated, lie money had oftea
before been rained on the credit of the city, in an
emergency.
Mr. McAuley, in explanation of this, replied that
$lO.OOO had once been negotiated, but it was on the
personal motes of the Finance Committee.
'Mr. Murdoch seemed to think it wad+ very strange
that the Company. with $5110,11110 worth of asset,.
could not raise $lO,OOll. He thought the proper way,
under the circumstances, would be for the Company
to advagee the Minds of the Road its security.
Mr. Smyth said that the bonds of the Company
were already sold: but they were willing to place
mortgage bonds as security in the hands of the Com
mittee.
Mr. Loomis agreed with Mr. Mut &telt. The mat•
ter is simply this: After the city has invested ssdo.
000 in the Road. she is now nsked to note on Jolt!.
I,ennil investment of $10,;00. And it would Le nd
more than just that the Cnnin,Lny shou Id secure the
city for that amount. lie uttered an amendment td
the Ordinance, providing that the loan of slfi, zion Le
made 'whenever the Company shall transfer to the
rlh• sufficient security.

DECEMBER 29
We have only space for the introductory address
of M. T. C. Gould, Esq.
Order having been requested by Gen. T. J. Poweri
Mr. Gould spoke as follows:
LADIF:S evil OENTLEMP.N :—Permit me to claim
your attention fur a moment-
The object for which we are here assembled is well
known to all. It is a couunendable object Tt had
its origin in benevolence, one of the glorious
attri
butes of the Almighty; and so far as we continue to
feel and speak and set in accordance with that hear.
enly attribute, just so far, and no farther, will com
mend:l.6ld] attach to us, the promoters and conserva
tor,.
Lut we should remember that the pure, limpid,
sparkling streamlet, that gushes from the rock dpon
the mountain slope, far above the contaminating in
fluence of all below, is, iu its course, sometimes com
mingled with impurities. and shorn of nil that ren
dered it 10% ely attractii eto the eye, the to-ste, or
the touch, awl it is finally lost maid the turbid and
noxious dregs of a gutter ur a sewer.
Let nut the high and heavenly motives by which
we profess to have been drawn into each other's pre
sence this evening thus degenerate, by commingling
with moth es, considerations, or influences lees pure
than the sparkling gem benevidence.
Let none of LI, sink below the dignity of appreci
ating and fostering that higb•minded and magnani•
mous sentiment, which prompts us to do good to
other. tPursd cos.

Many of our most worthy citizens testify to its wonderful
efficacy in all affections of the stomach and liver. As n
tonic, it never lias been equalled, for the relief it - affords in
all cases of debility or weakness of any kind is almost in
stantaneous. In nervims, rheumatic and neuralgic affec
tions. it has in numerous instances proved highly beneficial,
and in others eft, cted u. docided care.
When einiswilt physicians prescribe, and their patients so
unliti.diatilmiy recommend, surely we may cease t doubt,
and eagerly test its virtues for ourselves.
