Lowry's Steam Fire Engine, beg leave to submit the fal lowing joint report : On the evening of the 4th inst. the following joint Committees met at the rooms of the Board of Trade, to wit : Adams Getty, Wm. D. Hamil ton, Isaac Jones, W. M. Edgar, and 8. M. Kier from the City Councils; James O'Hara, John P. Pears, It. T. Leech. Jr., Thomas D. Updike, end John A. Wilson, from the Board of Trade; U. B. Ten-Eyck, William Collingwood, and Samuel L. Marshell, from Board of Underwriters. The meeting was organized by calling Isaac Jones, Esq., to the chair, and John A. Wilson, Esq., ap pointed Secretary. After a &moral interchange* of views on the subject for which the meeting had convened, Mr. Lowry was requested to give another exhibition of his Engine on Friday after noon, the ith inst., at 24 o'clock, to which time and place the Committees adjourned. The Engine was stationed on the corner of Liberty and Wayne streets, at the time before mentioned, and nine attachments of ordinary hose made to the lire-plugs, and in about ten . minutes from the application of fire, the Engine commenced discharging water through a two inch nozzle. • We understand from Mr. Lowry, that his en gine will weigh about five tons, with the usual supply of water in the boiler. This engine has one steam cylinder sixteen inches in diameter ; area 20:; inches; one pump 11 5-10 inches ; area 100 inches. We have also been furnished with the dimensions of Mr. Shawk's Steam Fire. En-, gine .‘ Young America, - which vas exhibited jn this city last spring. The weight, without water in the boiler, about 7 toreS. One steam eylindei' 11l inches; area 102 inches ; ,one pultip7.l inch es in diameter ; area. ,43. inches.; We here haire the dimensions of the two engines, and those who arc familiar with, filo application. of steam power to machinery 'of this' desCriPtion, can readily determine which its'the most iflicient ma chine for the purposes designed; As stated above, Mr., Lowry's engine was brought into 'requisition in about ten minutes after the application of tire ; in about fin minutes after, made WS strokes per minute, under pressure of 60 poundg, discharging 11.00 gallons per minute, through a two inch nozzle, 15n feet, which was continued about thirty minutes, with out interruption. • Stelun'was then shut of a inch no I Nieksithit; attached, and the en gine put in motion, under a pressure of 90 lbs., making 121: single strokes per .minute, and dis charging 1300 . gallons per minute, throwing :2:a;• feet, for inure than 41) minutes without inter ruption. For the parOse of comparing the relative merits of Mr. Lowry engine with that of Mr. hawk, we qu o t e friPm the printed report made hy a ('ommittee of the" Firemen's Association. descriptive •of the trial of the latter engin.), ctltich report was puhlished in the Diapa.frif. May 2:k, The four nozzles were then re mered, :Ind one of I; inch was attached with Chia the pump made 120 strokes. under a pres sure Cif bs. , throning- f, ga ll o ns per Minntt a horizontal distance of 2:2.7., feet. A nozzle of 1 inches diameter was then used, and with this the pump made 130 strokes, under a pressure of 90 throwing, 00 Indlone per minute it lemizod tal th , tance at ::20 feet." • bee. if our statistics nre -correct (and we think they ai . c.)and the above tioutation is true. \[r. Lowry's engine, under the same pressure of t:steam it) Iti , .l'maile sic strokes le-is per minute. with a nozzle one size larger than the " Young Auterien..• but discharged 701/gallons more water p.r merino, and 14 feet farther in distance, than the engine of Mr. Shriek. The price of Mr. Lowry's engine, when completed. will be $5,1100; that. of Mr. Shawk, we understand, was $9,11410. In comparing the relative merits of- these two engines, our opinions are formed from the exhi bition made in each case; not bring practical machinists, we tire not able to state the din . , mice between them in the application of power, but there is a difference in this respeeL Apply ing the facts before us, we are forced tu the ir resitdable conclusion that Mr. Lowry's engine is far imperior to that of Mr. Shawl:, for two rea sons: let. It being much less in price and 2d, It will discharge nearly double the' quantity of water, under the same pressure of steam, through the same sire nozzle. If the last trial of this machine is . nny test of its capacity 'and power, your Committee have no hesitation in recom mending Joseph S. Lowry's Steam Fire Engine to thi , or any other city, as a terrible • • Fire Annihilator.- For the purpose of comparing the power of Mr. Lowry's engine with the ordinary hand en gine, we utter the following calculations: The Neptune and Niagara, fire engines of this city, have each 9 inch pumps and It inch stroke. Forty str o kes per minute would discharge 22,680 inches (ruble) or !mtM gallons of water per minute; weight of Niagara 5,500 lbs. ; weight of Neptune 5,1.100 pounds; cast from $l,BOO to $3,000; diameter of pump 0 inches; area 03 inches; single stroke '1 inches: number of strokes 40-98 gallons. \lr. Lowry's engine has one double acting 1.,.10 pump. I incite; stroke, making 100 sin g • trolies, would discharge 25-1,40() cubic' inches, or 1.09 S gallomm per minute—equal to eler,n hand evines ; when making 12t.; single strokes, would 3112,-tllO cubic inches, or 1,309 gallons per minute—equal to thirteen hand engines. It' our conclusions arc correct, the question very naturally arises, what in 'to be done with Mr. Lowry's engine? Will the City Council of l'itt4oirgh buy it, and thereby place themselves in the light of benefactors, in placing t'ae city in to SAVe the lives and property at' its ar will they compel the worthy inventor to seek it purchaser elsewhere for a machine which nearly every business man in the city will say ought to be purchased and placed in efficient leinds for the common benefit of in community, who have heretofore suffered more from the rav ages of fire than any other city ire this country mill the same population? In conclusion, your committee offer for adop tion the following resolutions: liesaired, That the time has arrive.] when there should he a perfect concert of action between the city authorities and the people, on the sub ject of the introduction of judicious modern im provements into the Fire Department. R,,l,lred, That the introduction of Steam Fire Engines, and a paid Fire Department, in the city of Cincinnati, within the past two years, hue been attended with lasting benefits to that city— is past being considered an experiment —but a li.ted fact—and believe the system„ worthy of imitation and adoption in this city. J solved, That if the city Council do not con sider the present time auspicious fur the adoption of the tchoiesysfrat at once, they be requested LI approximate as near to it as possible, until the whole i perfected.
