THURSDAY MORNING .Mayoralty Convontion.—The Delegates elected at the Democratic Primary Meetings, on Saturday last, assembled at the Court House, yesterday morning. About twenty minutes before the time announced for the opening of the Convention, and when only a portion of the delegates were present, the assemblage was organized by calling John S. Kennedy, of the Third ward, to the chair. Mr. Charles Barnett was nominated for Vice Pre sident, but refused to act. Most B. Rowley, Ninth Ward, was then elected to fill that office. Mr. H. Wee. Whitney was chosen Secretary. The names of Delegates were then - called over, when the following gentlemen presented their cre dentials : Fret Ward—J. C. Buffum, Jacob Kent, James Kennedy, Wm. Bennett in place of John 4th. Second Ward—Charles Barnett, Arthur Magill and Richard M'Canco, in place of T. B. Davitt and A. P. Anshutz, E. C. Matthews, Michael Keenan. Third Ward—M. C. Milligan, James Hardman, Felix Lafferty, I. G. Sproul, John S. Kennedy. Fourth Ward—Joseph O'Brien, Martin Connolly, W. J. Montgomery, H. Lacock, Hugh Darning. Fifth Ward—Francis Felix, Jno. Mackin, Michael Leahy, Joseph Bell. Sixth Ward—Win. H. Whitney, Robert Laird, James M'Cabe, Henry Rea, jr., Win. A. Lare in place of H. J. Rogers. Seventh Ward--Jas. A. Irwin, B. F. Latshaw, J. N. M'Clowry, W. W. Irwin, B. Kane. Eighth Ward—William M'Clure, B. Flanegin, Ed ward Blatt, John Coyle, Samuel Dunn, in place of Daniel Seitz. Ninth Ward—Thomas S. Rowley, Joseph Weeks, George Rahm, John Dort-is, H. N. Spear in place of Wm. Hamilton. After the names of the delegates were called over, Mr. John Coyle moved that a committee of five be appointed to draft resolothin2. Mr. Barnett amended the resolution by moving that the Convention go into a nomination for Mayor. The Chair decided that Mr. Barnett's motion was not in order, and said a voto would be had on Mr. Coyle's resolution. Mr. James A. Irwin opposed the appointing of a committee, and said it was entirely contrary to usage to do co, before a Convention had acted on the busi noes that brought them together. He had never beard the like before, and he saw no necessity for it now ; the members of the Convention were sent here to nominate a candidate for Mayor, and not to pass resolutions. 110 hoped the Convention would attend to that business, and they would be sustained by all true Democrats. • Mr. J. Coyle, in reply, said he had'nt come there to make a nomination, as he didn't think it expedi ent, and would like to sec his resolution pass. Mr. M'Cloirry assnmed this to be a Democratic Convention, but for all that, there were men in it who had signed a call upon a Whig to run for Mayor, and would vote fur him, whether a nomination was made here or not. These men were pledged to support Volo, and to work Itgainet anything that would pre vent this Convention from declaring for him ; for this purpose they were here. If a fusion is desired, why can't a Democrat he selected as well as a wbig? Let us go into the business of the Convention, and ii7ireinate a Detnocrat for ;flavor. lion. W. W. Irwin declared there was great impro priety in appointing a committee to declare the set, (tments of a Convention that had, an vet, aecom }dished nothing. Hy the terms of the call upon which this body was assembled, the who& Convcn• then, not a committee of five, were to decide the question of a nomination ; the appointment of such a committee was an anomaly in the Democratic party ; the established custom was to go into a nomination, arid then to appoint a committee to draft resolutions expressive of the previous arts of the body. Ile concluded by suggesting that the Convention should vote directly on the nomination. Xi. thokwithdrew hi re:4°ll.l6°n, atnimovt d that a vote he taken on ;he question of "fnsion or 112 fusiodb" `Mr. Barnett amended by •offering the following &eared, That this Convention support no candi date for the office of Mayor, at the ensuing election. who will not pledge himself to support the nominee of the National Democratic Convention for President of the United States. Mr. Coyle amended this amendment as followe: Resolved. That nu distinctive party nomination be made by this Convention for the office of Mayor. Mr. Barnett said the amendment was not in order, as it was really the same in substance as the original Mr. Coyle here renewed his mittith tar n e•omullttec 011 resolutions. TLe reholutiou was carried, and the following persons appointed : Meters. Coyle, Lary, Sproul, Laird and Speer. Mr. MeOW offered a resolution, that the Conven tion recommend Mr. John M. Irwin to the rot,. of the city, a a candidate tar Mayor. As with the former re,mlution, of the same purport the Chair ruled it out of order. :Mr. 11 igan moved that the Chair appoint two rerrons from each Wiwi, to net na an Executive Committee for the ensuing year. Mr. Barnett wanted to know for what party. This question excited considerable laughter, and various amendments were made, that the committee should consist equally of Know Nothings and Whigs. Mr. James A. L•win said it was unnecessary to ap point ouch a committee, as the sixteen Democrats in the Convention would withdraw, organize, and ap point a Democratic Committee. After considernble discussion. this resolution was left lying upon the Secretary's desk, and no action it. A motion to adjourn for one hour was made, but was voted down Mr. Coyle, the chairman el the committee on reso lution!, a ho had been sitting on hie chair, apparently very unetvy, here came forward, and produced from his pocket a series of resolutions, which, from their rumpled and dirty appearance, seemed to hare been prepared at least some hours previously, and pro ceeded to read them, as follows in "all times paet," and** for him.we took to " a good time coming, for higher and greater honors." Tows CoYi.e, L GRIER SPROUL, 11. N. SPEAR, ROST. LAIRD, W. A. LAKE. _ - DECEMBER 27 Mr. Irwin moved to lay them upon the table, upon which the ayes and nays were called : Ayes—Messrs. Barnett, McGill, Keenan, Matthews, M'Cance, Bell, Maakin,,W. W. Irwin, Latahaw, Mc- Clowry, Kane, J. A. Irwin, Rowley, Weeks, Rahm, Dorris-16. Naye—Messra. Bennett, &dram, Jae. Kennedy, Kent, Milligan, Herdman, Lafferty, Sproul, Jno. S. Kennedy, O'Brien, Connolly, Burning, Lacook,Mout gomery, Felix, Leahy - , M'Cnbe, Laird, Whitney, Ron, Lare, Coyle, Bratt, Flanegln, Dunn, M'Clttrb, Speer —27. A motion was then made to adopt the resolutions, which Mr. 3l'Clowry hoped would not bo passed, as they did not express the sentiments of the Democracy of this city ; he would therefore enter his protest against their passage. Mr. W. W. 'rain said that to vote for these resolu tions would be to violate the instructions of his con stituency, who were in favor of a Democratic nomi nation. The resolutions proposed to endorse Mr. Vols for Mayor, but under the circumstance that they were forcing upon the Democracy a man they did not ap prove, ho would certainly be defeated. The ayes were then called for on the resolutions. Mr. Barnett remarked, that as it was very evident the whole affair to foist Vain upon the Democratic party was "cut and dried," he hoped those members of the Convention in favor of a Democratic nomina tion would not vote at all upon the passage of the resolutions. This advice was adopted by nearly all of the six teen whose votes are recorded above. Mr. Irwin, and a few others, out of respect to the convention voted, but in the negative. The resolutions were carried by the following vote : Messrs. Bennett, Buffum, James Kennedy, Kent, Milligan, Ilerdman, Lafferty, Sproul, John S. Ken nedy, O'Brien, Connolly, Darning, Lacock, Mont gomery, Feliz, Leahy, M'Cabit, Laird, Whitney, Rea, Lars, Coyle, Brett, Flanegin, Dunn, M'Clure, Spoor. The assemblage then adjourned rise die. Mr. Jas.-A. Irwin arose and requested all the dele gates, opposed to the action and resolutions of the Convention just adjourned, to remain and re-organ ganize themselves into a Democretie Convention. NOMINATION OF JOHN M. IRWIN, ESQ., A 8 THE OEM Agreeably to Mr. lrvrin's request, the following sixteen delegates remained and organized themselves into Convention by placing Mr. Joseph Bell, of the Fifth ward, in the Chair. Stroud Warti—Charles Barnett, Arthur M. Keeuaa, Richard M'Cance, E. C. Matthews. Fifth Wrird—John Mackin, Joseph Bell. Scrridh Ward—W. W. Irwin, B. F. Latshaw, J N. M'Clowry, B. Kane. James A. Irwin. Ninth Wiird—Thopias S. Rowley, Joseph Weeks, George Rahm; - Joh❑ Dorris. Mr. Arthur was selected to net as Secretary. Mr. %V. W. Irwin said the second Convention was called front a conviction that the former one had not done its duty in refusing to make a Democratic nom ination. and he would therefore present the following resolution s &soiled, That it is expedient to nominate a dis tinct Democratic candidate for Mayor. This wits carried unanitnonsly, without debate_ Mr. M'Clowry then moved that Juhu M. Irwin, Esq., be nominated by this Convention. Mr. W. W. Irwin seconded the motion, and . in a few remarks alluded to the indecency and unfairness that had characterised the whole proceedings of the other Convention. Ho said, that if they had only acted a little more justly, he might, perhaps, have coincided in their action, but he felt bound, now, to oppose it, The question on the motion of Mr. ill'Clowry was taken, and John liL Irwin unanimously declared to he tho Democratic nominee for Mayor. On motion of Mr. W. W. Irwin, the following gen- thence were appointed a committee to prepare an address to the Democracy of the city: Mmisra. Ir win, Barnett and Mackin. The annexed Executive Committee was liken-is° appointed, after which the Convention adjourned: Messrs. Joseph Bell. Jno. R. Bailey,..JrW. C. Dunn John Heldman, John N. M'Clowry,Thott. S. Rowley 0-eo.
