OFFICL4L PAPER OF THE CITI ago. I' GILL2.IOIIE. B. 510NT.i ,, MF..114 GILL MORE, & MONTGOMERY, • PROPRIETORS AND EDITORS. THURSDAY MORNING DECEMBER 2 Democratic Municipal NOMillatiollll JOHN M. IRWIN. FOR MAYOR OF ALLEWIENV, JOHN OTTERSON. DEMOCRATIC MEETING. FIFTH WARD. 9''' ,-' ak b ,--- ''' The Democracy of the Fifth Ward will hold a pal.lic moot ing at the Pl - 111..H.' SCti')UL 110I:SE, on the etirner of Walnut and Pike streets, on SATURDAY EVENING next, December 29th, at half-past Ma o'clock. All true Diano:lnts are invited to attend. Mr. Irwin has now been put in nomination a's the Democratic candidate for Mayor of his native city. An excellent executive officer he will make if elected, and he has hosts of friends who feel sure that the Democracy nud the citizens generally will rally numerously to his support. We believe his chances of an elec tion far better than Mr. Volz's at this moment. No fraud, no violation of pledges, no packing of a convention by means that disgrace any party, has secured to Mr. Irwin the nomination. Be is unquestionably the choice of his parly : and he will find a large support outside of the Democratic ranks. The people of this city are tired of the nORSE-LEECIIE ,, that having once got possession of offices and spoils hang on to them with a desperate grasp. Mr. Irwin will bring to the Mayor's tdiiito good police, energy of character. intelligence in city affairs, and the most honest intentions to discharge all the duties of that office ener getically and faithfully. We tire rejoiced at his nomination, not to party grounds merely, hut its it good citizen who has lived all his life in this city, and sustained such a character as has made every man who knows him his friend. We have had numerous assurances from men of all parties that they will vote for him. and use every proper influence in their pow or to secure his election. lie can be elected . The present, du-nothing incumbent would do well to make preparations for leaving an offn•o he has neither the capacity, energy or integi ty to fill with credit either to himself or th, city. He may pledge himself to a 4' league .• and secure their exertions to drum up for hint delegates who will Itetray their party. awl cure fur for him a lyitm vote that din's not express the will of uric in ten 11r the Deit,..mt—•: city. But such frauds upon t h e is-ople \tit] avail no longer. The people have hoett de ceived and trifled with lty a few ward istlitt clans long cuou . gh. They want honest nontimt dons and an honest candidate 111 M. They have neither in F. Volz they have 10th John M. Irwin. There 'were sixteen Democrats, just exactly, 1.1 the Convention that met at eleven o'clock ye,ter day at the Court !louse an•l they acteti Ott •• unterrified democracy of old. They had n• bargains and sale , . , to make: no Toil , to gra' no selling of their party tel it , principle- I:. 1, compliA ; no truckling to idle far. awl 1, • falsehood:- to peddle lit regnrd to their neighb.,i • They had assembled t. , ;he work or tier party, and well and manfully they did it. Their course resembled that ,f the •eventr-u democratic members of the preiqint Representatives at Washington. They stand their own banner an.l principles, repudiate a!! bargain and FaleA, and light on and fight evcr fur the right. THEY RECOMMEND. —When thos.e calling theta selves Democrats undertake to recommend any thing that is not Democratic, or when they call on us to support any but a Denmcratic c o mlhJat.. we are under no sort of oHigation to pay attention to it. Every man of our party i. iu the same position, and at liberty to do exa,tly what he pleases in regard to hi, v,t.• The " league' . and Volz delegate , . in the ~uventi, , n yesterday underb , ,k to advise us 1,,a to vote nn the Mayoralty question. That advice i 4 very useless, entirely improper. iv prolAbly deigned to distract and divide the party on the etc t,c Presidential election, and should be totally dis regarded by every true man of the party. NEW DEIESS.—The Lawrence Juurnui, publleh ed at New Castle by uur friend James M. Kue.b.r. Esq., comes to us in a new dress. We are glad to know that it it pro.per ing, and doing good ,ervice not only to its part. but to all improvements that promote the puHic welfare. Success to the Journal, and to it, gen tlemanly editor. it was a novel thing to see oil line Whigs and late Know Nothings crowding the lobby and managing the Convention that first met yester day. It looked very touch as though our party Was sold and dissolved. But •• the sixteen' broke up the bargain, and the people will ratify their act. NOT Sol.D. —The political traders who ;tied to sell the democracy yesterday actually undertook to buy Mr. Irwin off with a -soft-souping - reso lution. As one of the members of the Conven tion said in his speech, "Mr. Irwin won! I scorn such an insulting bribe.- WE are always riglt while always derm.cratio. and on that ground we base our support of a democratic candidate whenever we can get one to work and vote for E Chronicle Sap of the convention ye!-teniay " the riding of the fusion chairman war r , ,/ in deed—all one way ! NN* Some of-the Gonmequeneve of Diriinie"li ed I uurn lgr at ion It is estirhuted by pursuits familiar with the rate of immigration, that if the average bet.tio greater the next six monthstbau the past; there will be a falling off in 1851 f, of some 150,000 or Iso.ooo in the number of foreigners arrivingon our shores. This is a weighty-fact, and de serves careful considerations from those Who in business or morals are speculating on the future of our country. Probably 80,000 of those Who stop at home are Germans; the rest of the defi cit is made up almost entirely of Irish. If each of these inunigrants had consumed or spent Si 4 in New York as he passed through, it will make a difference next year in the city of some 570 0 ,- 000 income. If each had poisei , scd in reaily money the average which the returns from Cit tle Garden show at present —namely, 71.1,, , 11t —it would diminish the import of specie into the - country liy about thimcrn and a half million dollars—money which is not even an exchange, loft is so much clear addition of wealth. Then all these people consume our products: they rent our houses, they wear our clothes, they eat our corn and wheat and rye; our beef find mutton and fish ; they buy our timber and brick and iron and coal they read our books and pa pers and magazines. Setting down the average cost of living at two dollars a week to each man. and woman and child—which would be a low estimate—and supposing that they at least earn all they consume by their labor, we have a loss. next year to the producers of the country—to the farmers, the grocers, the builders, the cloth iers, the house owners, the brick-makers and coal-miners, the editors and booksellers, of seven teen millions of dollars. II these estimates be correct. we have a direct loss neat year to the country in this decrease of immigration of over 11,irry ma/ions of dollars. We cannot easily appreciate this howl until we take some corresponding destruction of value to our mist apparent wealth. People do rendiiy seo loss and gain on n great 'call. It hits taken centurie- to make the mass understand that a penny or a farthing duty on a pound of some foreign article imported, is an immense to-s to their own pockets. Texas was thought a valuable acquiAition iv many. in its rich farms. though we paid a round price for it; net the %aim; of all the farms in Texas. and .Arkansas be-ides, is no greater than the value lost by this year's decrease of immi gration. In king the value in 1r , 51. than the loss this year from impeded inunigrati..n The quick destrix tion of all the ;lour and eon'. and the products of agriculture, which we usually export, which bring wealth to so many thousands, would be but little greater than the de-traction, this goat. imr, rted mmngrand..
