AMERICA'S 11.1ASSION.
The Rev. Charles Wadsworth, of the; Tenth
Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, is noted for.
his eloquence, which for five years past has ati
tracted larger audiences than any other minister
in the City of Brotherly Love, or perhaps in the
Union. Last Thanksgivin g Day ha, preached . a
sermon on " America's Mission" that sternly
rebuked two classes of fanatics, and.which, ties
brought down upon, hia head the anathemas of
Lloyd Garrison and the followers of Ned Bunt
line. The language of the Reverend gentleman
is at times truly grand, and his figures are al
ways original and striking. Hear him for his
cause :
"Now, this leads me to remark, Thirdly, that
the truth under review will appear still more ap
parent, if you carefully observe how the genius
of American Institutions, and the peculiarities of
American charaeter, eminently qualify and equip
allor this great work of man's social and Civil re
generation.
"The whole history of the rise and progress
of our national character, cannot have failed to
impress this thought strongly Upon every philo
sophic mind. Not only in the original Settle
ment of this country was there a - sitting of all
Christendom 'for the noblest specimen of Maxi. : .
hood to go forth as colonists, but in all our sub
sequent progress has there been garnered into it
every variety of national character, so that there
is ...comely a solitary people in the• whole earth
which finds not its representative incorportitedia.'
our social system. The iron Saxon, the volatihi.

German, the effervescing4ltalliW the warm-

warmly has the whole been fused and fire . d a by
the glorious freedom of American life, that our
national character is, to-day, a new and nobler,
style in the development of manhood. And in
this anomalous fact, you cannot fail to perceive '
how tiod has furnished us with the desiderata
fur one great mission to the nations, as well in
the hold we thus have on the Sympathis 'end
affections of all people, as in-these elements. of '
ardor, and energy anckhope, which - must render
the Anglo-American the noblest representative
of man.
And to this, then, the mighty resources of in-

the benighted, the refuge of the oppressed, the
home of the exile, the hope of the lost. Oh! I
say, in view of what my country now is, and what'
she seems destined to be, in tbe'march of God's
providence, who ma tail to recognize God's-great
purpose in raising her up a,, the one mighty in
strument for the civil end religious regeneration
of the world.
Nor have we any lin.re to fear—' From the in
flux of foreign element into our body politic, in
the character and habits of the mingled races of
the old world." Though foreign emigration were
increased a hundred fold, it would no more alarm
a thoughtful man, for the safety of our free in
stitutions, than do the thousand rivers, thatpour
their varied elements into the sea, alarm a philo
sopher for the purity of the mighty and assimila
ting ocean. This nation already, in all its
grand element, of character, permanently Anglo-
American ; and a wise man would just as sin 7
cerely fear to dine on a salmon, lest he, himself,
should become a great fish: nr to break his fast
on a bird, lest he should sprout with feathers and
wings ; as have a fear lest this American nation
ality be essentially or injuriously Modified by any
foreign elements that may flow into it.
Men cry aloud against "the upgrowth in our
midst of the Papal hierarchy ;" but tide danger
we take to be, in the main, a phantom, conjured
up by religiwi riernai4'o2 - ,ues as a man if straw, to
be overthrown in Quixotic chivalry, in the face
of an ignorant multitude. Now and then some
impracticable and et - Anion:a yuuth may profess
conversion to Rome, seduced by Jesuitic arts,
and thinking of the romance of a foreign col
lege, or the mysteries of a confessional, but that
this Anglo-American people are to go back in any
considerable masses to the driveling mummeries
of the Tiber's haggard superstition, is about as
likely as that our commercial marine will retro
gade into the old Roman oar-galleys, and our
Paixhan howitzer give place to the old Latin bat
tering ram. The man who, in a land and:an age
like this, is honestly declaring against the tem
poral influence of the poor Pope; and earnestly
warning his countrymen against the political arts
of the poor Catholics; ought to have lived . at
least iu the last century, and followed the Span
ish cavalier in his crusade against wind-mills.
Washington Bh7r ha 4 the following jtist
and complimentm7 notice of the Hon. J. °limey
Junt,, the Iknocrntie member of Congreas from
the Berk:: county di,:triet, in this State:
A Piztn DAv.—Haying attended, with per
haps half a dozen exceptions in all, every day's
session of the United States House of Bepresen
tatives since that of 1842 and 184$, we have
rarely witnessed it more interesting one than
that of yesterday. We style it "a field day;"
such it was, indeed, more especially for the sup
porters of Mr. Itichardson,.who„mulenthe.lead ,
of Mr. J. Glancy Junes, gained many important
points against both the opposing parties. Mr. J,
exhibited himself in a new eharacter—one which
we presume his modesty has not before permitted
him to assume—in that of a party leader. Clapi- • .
tally did he discharge its delicate and really try
ing responsibilities, preserving an equanimity, if
not a very jollity, if temper throughout the day,
that gave hint incalculable advantage, and turn
ing everything falling from his foiled and attimes' •
over-excited opponents to the benefit of the ceae
lie was so skillfully engineering through the
threatening eit emnster.e,s by which it was sur
rounded. After we went to press, Mr. Walker,
of Alabama, labored apparently to induce hint to
admit that the Democratic party were standing
on a Southern sectional piatiorua—seeming,anxi
oils to have that plea t jo-tir, him in voting
hereafter for Mr. Rit ha rdsm. While 'Ay. Wash-,
Lamle, of lilinoia, lah:4ed even harder to indneo
I him to make the sante admission that he might
thereon hang a justification for his evident pur
pose of hereafter suitaining pure and maaduiter
iitod anti-slaveryism anti nothing: else. But Mr.
Jones was caught in neither trap. Be demon

on which Ids party stand, aad so evpl.iinod their
position upon it, as ;hat wide ma la it appar
