male to get together a demorraitc convention

crats should turn out on Saturday and elect
good and true men, delegates to the convention.
It is not just, fair nor dentocratir that one man
should hold lucrative public offices, either by
election or appointment, for more than twelve or
fourteen years, and no one has a right to demand
it. We know several case , to which this rule
would apply.

FRIDAY MORNING

The type on which the Daily and Weekly .3[0, , ,r0y
Poet was printed previous to getting our new dress
is offered for sale. It in Nonpareil and Bender, and
in good condition, as any one can see by looking at a
copy of the paper of last week. It will be sold
cheap for cash.
THE PRICE-CURRENT
The third number of the Price-Curreut is for
sale at the counting room of the Morning Pcizt.
Of its accuracy and fidelity there can he little
doubt from the amount of labor bestowed upon
the preparation of the tables.
The table can he printed on letter sheet for
those ordering them: and the card, of the par
ties wishing them placed at the head.
This number has a pretty good show of adver
tisements and cards. Its success seems to he
good so far.
THE CONVENTION—THE RAILROAD.
Among the re,mlutions of the Democratic Con
vention is one which, it is said, indicates that
the Democratic party is unfriendly to the Penn
sylvania
railroad. If such I- , the design •of
that resolution it doe= not represent the senti
ments of the party The party is in favor of
every great public improvement. It may be
jealous of the encroachments of corporation. , ,
and will prevent them when it is discovered that
they pervert to improper purposes the privileges
of their charters. But that any party, or any
considerable number of persons in this county
are unfriendly to the Central railroad, or any
other, while they keep wiUtin the sphere of the,
legitimate rights and ditties, is not the fact, as
we well know.
Railroads develops the wealth of the country,
improve the means of communicatien. increase
travel and trade, and enhance the value of every
acre of soil, every ton of coal and iron, every
bushel of wheat and corn, :old in fact promote
every interest of the Country. That the Demswrat
ic party sets itself in opposition to these great
public improvements, or any one of them, while
pursuing their legitimate purposes, every one
knows is not the fact. Corporations should out
have undue privileges, nor be permitted to abuse
them to the injury of individuals. But if rail
roads are to be built charters of incorporation
must be granted. Nu other way is yet devised
by which wealth can be associated for the pur
pose. We are entirely in favor of encouraging
the construction of railroads, and of giving them
all necessary privileges not inconsistent with the
security of private rights--well knowing that
they are among the most important interests
the country, and tnest valuable and essential t , •
Its prosperity. We rejoice in the magnificent
success of our Central railroad, and hope and
believe it will ever prosper. The people of this
county have, as a community. a !Millen dollars
of stock in this road, and it is far from their in
terest that its success be ilamagcal. Success to
to the Central road, and to the people whose
corporate and individual credit and wealth have
built it. And we wish abundant success to all
railroads that are a great public benefit.
But the resolution. though strangely worded,
and evidently got up in haste, and fused in
haste, could not hilVe been designed to Int an
what is declared by the Jourfed to be its import
and design. Taken with the context. it can only
be construed to imply that the Collett ition was
oppm , ed to the sale of the line of the pub
lic works to the Central read company In that
connection the road is mentiotied. That is all
that the convention could have had properly in
view. We have always been opposed to the sale
of the public works unless their full value could
be obtained for them. We believe that, with the
Ohio river improved, there would be business
enough to make both the canal and railroad pro
fitable atuLpaying improvements. But still, if
the value could be oGramed. the State would do
well to sell the canal to a company that would
keep Pt in u.e. The canal has dono much to de
velope the wealth, and promote the interests of
the State. It has .paddler itself ten-fold in the
increase of publid wealth it ha. occasioned But
it is not tits legitimate Lu.liness of a State, or a
civil government to engage in the transportation
of tnerehandise. Let all such business be left to
private enterprise : and if the public works cats
he sold. 'fur their value, to a company, and the
proceeds applied to pay the State debt, no man
would oppose the sale. Such so undoubtedly the
almost unanimous public sentiment , and we are
satisfied that nu conveutien, upon due considera
tion, would say anything to the contrary.
On this subject f2N cry man can entertain viii
views lie pleases, and such are our.
differs from us let him Teak out We are is
the special advocate of the Central road, or 0
any other; but we are the advocate of every
interest that is identified with the public interest
in which the whole IllaSB of the people partici
pate; and confident are we that such is the sen
timent of the Democratic party.
We shall refer to this matter again.
THE COMMITTEE--A CON VENTION
The committee that met at the St. Charles
Hotel yesterday, it will be seen, have called on
the Dcimoersey to elect delegate, .0 Saturday
evening to meet in c.nventitin au Wolnesd:iy
next to consider the matter of a candidate fur
Mayor. Some of the committee were in favor of
endorsing Mr. Vole's call, but it was overruled.
The convention, we think likely, will nominate a
Democratic candidate.
IVO have good reason to iatheN e that defeat
would have resulted from endorsing Volz, and
the committee did right in calling a eonventi-n.
We are aware that :L desperate effort will be
The Holiday Seamen
Now is the joyous season of the year when ev
ery body is expected to give and receive presents
whether they be great or small. All dealers in
toys, fancy goods and holiday merchandise gene
rally are aware of this but let them also re
member that this is the season of all others when
people look into the columns of a good newspa
paper to find the articles they wish to present
their friends, sweethearts or acquaintances. An
advertisement will co , t you a trifle and may be
the means of pointing out to hundreds the very
place to get what they want. A word to the
wise is sufficient.
Proceedings of the Convention.
. In some of the papers the proceediup of the
Democratic Convention of Wednesday last are
grossly misrepresented. In the Journal's report
it is said that a resolution was offered recom ,
mending D. R. Williams as a candidate for Canal
Commissioner. Such a resolution was offered,
but it was thrown out and not adopted
