THURSDAY MORNING AUNT MAGUIRE'S Description of The Donation Party. FROM THE BEDOTT PAPERS fecNcLunED.l The next mornin', as soon as I got my chores done up, I went over to Mr. Scrantum's to see how they come on, and help 'em regilate a little. Murder-alive! such a sight sts that house was, from one end to Vother, lmever sot my tew look in' eyes on! The carpets was all greased up with butter, and cheese, and sassages. And then the lamp He had done more mischief than we know'd on the night afore. It had run off the table and make a creel great spot on the best car pet and I found Miss Scrantyim a tryin' to wash it out. I sot tew and helped her—but 'twa'n't no use—'twouldent come out. Susan, she was settin' on a little stooltiLicchirin' teaspoons, and cryin' as if her heart wquTd break. "What's the matter, dear?" says I—but the poor child couldent answer me. So her mother said she was a cryin' about the bunnit bein' spiled. "No wonder," says 1, " it's enough to make anybody cry. I a'pose you can't dew nothin' with the htinnit, can you I" "0, yes," say§ Miss Scran tum, says she ; " I've ben lookin at it this morn in', and I think I can get enough out on't to make a bag of. It'll make a very nice bag—and I shall keep it as long as I live, for your sake, Mite Magwire." I looked at the woman with surprise. There she sot on the floor, a rubbin' away at that grease spot, and a talkin' as calm about that six dollar bunnit, as if it hadent a cost moron six cents. I was kind o' vexed at her for not makin' more fuss about it. I actilly be gun to think she hadent no feelin', and dident care for nothing. " And then," says I, "to think o' their breakin' your beautiful chatty— 'twas shameful—a present from yer mother tew ; and you sot so much by it ; and I've heord ye say 'twas the last thing yer mother ever giv ye." I was tannin' on in that way when I thought I heerd Miss Scrantum sobl looked up and she was cryin' drotfully. She couldent hold in no longer when I spoke o' the chany. I was sorry I said a word about it; but it convinced me that Miss Scrantum had feelin's, deep feelin's ; but she'd larnt to control 'em, poor woman ! Well, I stayed a spell and helped 'em clean up, and then I went hum. Susan went to the door with me. When we got outside, I axed her whether titer so a, :tinny provision; hrought in the night afore. She told toe to come into the store-room and look. So I, went iate't and took a view, and there was two or three pulikihs; a couple o' spare ribs (spare enough, tew, I tell ye), three or four cabbages, a chicken, what was left o' Deacon reabody•s cheese, and a codfish. "Is that all I" sap , I. "Yes," says Susan, and half o' the cheese, and one o' the spare ribs and the chicken are to go for pew-rent—l heerd pa tell ma so : but you musteut lot 'em know I told you about it- -1;•r they'd think it wrong for roe to speak of it: you won't tell 'mu. will ye, Miss Mani-ire •• says I, •• I won't let it out. - So I went bum—and as I went along eunsiderin' the Metter, I come to a uuailiu4O9, COlielliSinit in Illy owl mind, that , i ,, teatiOß panu , tra.l a hithibuy, WcP, the next Sunday Parson Ser:intuin re quo.ted the male menthe,: of his congregation to meet him the next eN enin' at the ineetin'-house. Ter uncle went to the umetin'. I was in a won derful tidgit to know what was the object on't and quite impatient for husband to come hum. When he come I obsarved he was uncommon tickled about something. What i 8 the matter? dew tell for pity's sake," says I. Why, the minister's axed a dismission," says be. •• You don't I" says I. " Jest so," says he ; and then he ha-haw'd out a laffite. " What ails ye, man alive '!" says I ; " I don't see what titer is to Taff at in that; for toy part, I look npon't as a great misfortiu to Scrabble Hill, to lose such a minister as Parson Scrantum. nil astonished to see you Well, you won't he," says he, when I tell ye about the meetin'.”. So he wont on and gin me the bull description. Ile stud that when Mr. Scrantum told 'em he wanted a dismission, they was-wonderful surprised—Deacon Skinner, he riz and axed the reason. So Mr. Scrautum stated that he found it onpossitile to support his family on hi+ salary. Deacon Skinner said that was curus—he thought four hundred dollars was putty well up. Deacon Peabody said he thColght tew., especially with a donation party besides. Deaeon Fustick, he put in, and said 'twas rather a queer time for a minister to complain of his congregation, jest after they'd gin him a bee—and be ave.! Dr. Lippincott what was Ala opinion. I`; ,, w Dr. Lippincott never had an opinion in all his life, on any subject—if he had, he never ex pressed it for fear of injurin' his practice ; 'tain't evon known what his politics is—he always con trives to be away on election days.) So he betiun'il and haw'd, and said that really he hadn't vile up hiss inind—ho hoped Mr. Scrautum 'pre eiated his donation party—ho hoped the congre gation 'predated Mr. Scroutum; he wished—he wished things wasn't sittiwated jest as they was sittiwated ; and that was all they got out o' him. Old Parker obsarved that minister's families, somehow, took more to support 'em than any body else. Mr. Scrantum said his family was us Aluinomieal as they could be, but he had a good many children, and 'teas purty difficult to dew as he'd ought tew by 'em on four hundred dol lars a year ; axml 'em whether they thought ary one them could dew it. Cappen Smalley, rich old enrmudgin, stuck up his head and said he guessed he could dew it—any reasonable man could dew it—especially with the help of a dona tion party every year; but he hoped Mr. Serail turn's request would be granted unanimously for Iris part, he'd long ben of opinion that they'd ought to have a cheaper minister, and one that. hadn't such a snarl.o' young ones. I don't s'pose Parson Scrantum would a said anything severe ti st hadent a ben for Cappen Smalley's speech. lie seemed quite stirred up by it. He riz up con aiderahle tlusliated, and says he—" I thank God, that whatever else I lack, ho has ben pleased to give me plenty o' the poor blessin's—yen, a quiver full o' them. Ana it's for their sakes, not my own, that 1 come here to-night. If I was alone in the world, I could and would dew on a' most nothing—though Scripter says the laborer is worthy of his hire. Brethren, since I conic among you, I've done may best to be a faithful pastor—if I've failed 1 hope to be forgiven. At first I had an idea that I should be able to rub along, on my small salary ; and I don't know but I might a done it, if it hadent a ben for one thing." Here he paused. "What was that 7" says Deacon Peabody. Mr. Scrantum continued —•• I've hen here tow years, and you're had the kindness to give me tew donation parties. I've stood it so fur, but I can't stand it no longer; brethren, I feel convinced that one more donation p.irty would completely break me down. I will now retire and leave the meetin' to decide as they see tit. - Ter uncle said that for about tire minutes after he went out universal silence pre vailed. The first to speak was Doacou Skinner. • Strange " says he. •• Curtis!" says Deacon Peabody. Remuirkable!" says Deacon Fuss tlck '• unaccountable :" says Cappen Smalley. •• Singular circumstance 1" says Dr. Lippincott. Then yer uncle got up, and, says he-- Gentle men. So 'twits put to vote and granted. A few days afterward the minister's folks packed up and started off for Miss .Scrantiun's father's, to stay till they could git another place. Ver uncle gin 'em ten dollars when they went. Ile'd a ben glad to give fifty if he'd a ben able. They was very thankful for't, and the parson gill es his partite blessin',and I'd ruttier have that than all Cappen Smaley's money. We all felt had enough when we said good-bye. Wm. Berrien has published a pamphlettwjth. a view of disabusing the public mind of errone pus views of the great wealth of Trinity,Cluirch in New York. The Philadelphia Inquirer thus sums up his statements According to the statement prepared. by the rector, with the fullest opportunity of informa tion, the gross revenue of the corporatien up to that time—from ground rents, pew-rents and every other source, had never at anyone time reached a higher point than $57,032. After de ducting the interest on the debt of about $440,- 000, the net indome in 1847 was only $33,130. But continues Mr. Berrien, in order to-present the whole subject with frankness andcandor, and to leave no room. for suspicion, in honorable minds of evasion or doubt, it is proper to state that from great changes in the general value of property within the last few years the income of Trinity Church has been materially increased. But what is it, with. this somewhat sudden and unexpected advantage, at the present time? The gross amount from ground rents, pewrents and every other source was, on the Ist of May last $89,485,54. DECEMBER 20. After deducting, the interest on its present debt of $616,913, (which was mainly incurred by 'her benefactions to others,) amounting to $84;781,28, the net income of Trinity Church is precisely: neither istorenor.losii than $64;705 26. This ho does not regard as particularly enormous for a great corporation, with a large landed property in a great and "flourishing 'City. He liffirms, moreover, that from4he time the elmrch reached the point where herrincome exceeded her reasonable wants, she has- in due-proportion dispersed them, with a freedom and - liberty which have made her wealth a•`grBut'blessing. He then proceeds to illustrate, ,and states many facts in corroboration. Trinity has given again and again to other churches, has assisted aged and decayed clergymen. and distributed its means in the most benevolent and generous spirit. In an other passage, he estimates the amount of the loans, and grants of Trinity at $2,500,000—an amount, he says, more than equal to two-thirds of the value of the estate, excepting the church edifice and burial grounds, which now' datually remain?. Items for Arigiirre's arul Dleolurnirs —lnquiries Lavingibeen made of us lately as to the use of, gun cotton, and whether!it could take the place of gunpowder, we have obtained the following information on the subject from the Smithsonian Institution, viz. Its cost, weight for weight, is a little more than gunpowder, but owing to greater strength, force to force, it is cheaper The Governments of Prussia, Austria, Russia, and England, have made a great number of, ex periments on the use of gun cotton in fire-arms, and in all case:Mie reports of the engineers en gaged in making the experiments were against its adoption in the zplace of gunpowder. Well, when Charles I. found his revenues short, lie granted eertain privileges amounting to mortcrpo-s. lies, and among these was the manufacture of paper, the exclusive right of which was sold to certain parties who grew rich and enriched the government at the expense of those who were obliged to use paper. At this time, all English paper bore in water marks the Royal Arms. The Parliament under Cromwell made jests and jeers at his law in every conceivable manner, and among other indignities to thememory of Charles, it. was ordered that the Royal Arms be removed from the paper. and the fool's cap and bells be substituted. These also were removed when the Ramp Parliament was prorogued, but ,paper of the size of the Parliament's Journals' Still hears the name of " Foolscap. There is no known fish, recent or fossil, the pectoral or yental tins of which could produce a series of traces like those dis covered in the coal strata of Pennsylvania by Prof. Rogers. Prof. Wyman, therefore, thought That, in the present state of knowledge, there wan no ground for denying that the quadruped tracks found in the coal formations were made by reptiles. —Men talk, (says the celebrated Dr. Hall,) about hardening the constitution, " and, with that view, expose themselves to summer's sun and winter's wind. In the life of clerks, the minimum mortality is lti, and the maximum 23. The mortality decreases till 35, and then goes up in the replier way. In the life of plumbers, the maximum mortality is at the early age of 18; there is a declension, and then another maximum at 38, and the proportion then goes on regularly according to the ordinary law. —lt has hitherto been n matter of necessity for many persons to use two pairs of specbtoles— one pair - for reading, and another for a distance.
