Useleas Fin , . Pla g e.—Yesterdmy, during the fire on Prospect street, an attempt was made to attach a sec tion of hose to the fire plug on the corner of Wash ington and Webster streets; but the plug was found to be so much out of order as to render this impos sible. We understand that it has been in this con dition for some time, and would be entirely useless in case of a conflagration. Some one (whose ever .duty it is) should see that it is repaired. The plug at the corner of Washington and Wylie is also of no service, as the head of wider is entirely too weak. As these two plugs are the only ones the inhabitants of the Sixth Ward have to depend upon in case of fire, the necessity of having them at once put in good order will be at once perceived. ARRIVAL OF THE ASIA. • nam.eisx., December 18.—The steamer Asia arrived this morning, with Liverpool dates to the Bth inst. Affairs in the Crimea are unchanged, and the pa pers furnish no remarkable events there. The rumors of peace are still abundant, but are unauthentic. Consols went up on the strength of these rumors, and are quoted at 90i. Tho bullion in the Bank of England had increased during the previous week £87,000. The Cotton market was steady, but prices were without change. The sales (Sr the week were 50,000 bales4including 11,000 to speculators and exporters. Bretuititaffs were generally quiet; sales Western Canal Flour at 42s 6d. Provisions were quiet and rates unchanged. The weather was favorable for the crops. The ship Hermann sailed from Southampton en the sth for New York. The ship Constitution was totally destroyed by tire in the river Mersey on the day after her arrival, to gether with her whole cargo. The passengers and baggage were landed in safety. The English papers are tilled with peace rumors, but their assertions are totally at variance with the views of the continental press. The London nines, and Disraeli's organ, the London Press, assert that peace is at hand; that Austria is about to address an ultimatum to Russia, summoning her under threat of breaking off negotiations with her, to accept such conditions of peace as the Western Powenrare now willing to assent to, but which they will, not agree to alter another successful campaign. The Berlin correspondence of the London 'Morning Chronicle says that Austria maintains the validity of the treaty of December 2d, and hence all attempts of other German States to exercise pressure upon the Western powers with a view to pacification, have been paralyzed. There are various reports of a t. tempts at negotiation, but the state of affairs apps. rently stand thus: Austria has made a communics tion to Franco, embodying terms which she is pre pared to propose to Russia as an ultimatum. France. has submitted this communication to England, and Loth governments have it now under consideration. Thu terms are a great advance upon any yet offered, but they are the terms of Austria and not of Russia. Austria does not guarantee to join the allies if the ultimatum be rejected, but to suspend relation , with Russia. The London Times says positively that the treaty with Sweden has been signed at Stockholm, while the Pest firmly denies it. Private letters from Si. Petersburg indicate 1.1 de sire OD the part of Russia for peace. The overland trade was profitable, and money abutolant. Advices from the Crimea state that a weak fire is still kept up by the belligerents, but nothing of itn porlance had occurred. The north side of Sebs, topol is rapidly assuming gigantic dimensions. and the preparations fir destroying the docks arc nearly com pleted. The bulk of the Russian army has retained to its former position. The French hove been rein forced by the arrival of twelve thousand troops. The English laid Sardinians have also (teen reinforced. Considerable additions continue at the some time to be made to the Russian forces. The Russians continue to threaten liertch . , ohieli has been largely reinforced.
