I=l3 Supposed Murder.—Officers Slicer and Trovillo yesterday arrested an Irishman named Peter Mur phy, on suspicion of having taken the life of a girl named Mary Curry, by drowning her in the river.— The parties had been living together as man and wife, in this city, for a considerable time, but went to Cincinnati some weeks since. On last Friday, they got on board the steamer Philadelphia, to return here ; during the voyage up, the woman excited the jealousy of Murphy by holding more intercourse with the bands of the boat than he thought proper. On Sat urday night, about seven o'clock, a few miles this side of Wheeling, while employed at the stern of the boat, hanging out clothes, and with no one near, ex cept Murphy, she either accidentally fell overboard, or was thrown in by him. He did not give the alarm for some time after the occurrence, and when the officers of the boat rushed to the rescue, it was too late to save the woman's life. This conduct, together with certain expressions he made use of, led the clerk to think the affair was no accident, and when the steamer tu-riteed yesterday morning, he gave Mar pity into the custody of the police. Numerous invention, have recently ate Feared for riving and nhuvilig, and these have all been MI 11011110d WY worthless, limn their imperfect method of riving, which consists of splitting from the nide of the block but one shingle, which almost Invariably rano elf. This difficulty is entirely obviated by K ENDALL'S MAC 111 N E, Which first splits from tho Mido of the block a piece thick hough for two shingle., which is separated in the centre, and by means of elastic guides each part is conducted through a pair of approximating knives, which completes the operatic ; thus produciug two shingles at every revbiu lion. . This machine will tiro and Mayo from the block thrts, thousand shinglos por hour, of uniform thickness and taper, superior in solidity and durability to those made by hand or any other process. • Its operations are by no means confined to pine and other s ,,f't wood, tint works to equal advantage, oak, walnut, and ,•very other description of timber that can be split. The workings of the machine can be examined at 11. 11. Ryan's Furniture Buildings, Fifth street, Pittsburgh.
