VII 1.41,, =ME From tha Philadelphia North American.] Interesting bearing. m )11 Monday afternoon, an interesting case was heurml before Alderman Snider. A young woman named Mary Anne Williams, was charged by her brother, Samuel Williams, with absconding from his custody. Messrs. Small, Fletcher and Ad ❑is- appeared for Samuel Williams, and Messrs. Wm. L. Hirst and Daniel Dougherty for Miss Williams. According to the testimony, it appaer eml that Mies Williams was but 9 years of age at the time of her father's death, which left her an orphan. Her fatherdied at Quebec. and on hie death-bed he confided the brothers nod sisters to time care of Samuel Williams. Soon afterwards, the whole family came to this city. Mary Anne was placed by her brother with a Mrs. Cheney, in Arch street, with whom she lived nearly five years. She alleged that the cause of her leaving was that her brothers, Samuel and William, upon discover ing that she had been going to a CatholicChnrch, inflicted personal violence upon her. She is at present living with the family of Mr. Gill, who is understood to be a Roman Catholic. Upon cross examination, Samuel Williams admitted that he struck his sister for going to Catholid C'hureh against his order. Gen. Small contended that the case was of a child .who had left the cus tody of her guardian, and it was the duty of the magistrate, if the-proof was sufficient, to order the girl back to the onstedy of her brother, or send her to the House of Refuge. Mr. Hirst argued that, according to law, an orphan at the age of fourteen years has the right to select a guardian, and liberty of conscience is guaranteed to all by the constitution. The magistrate bold the case under advisement until ten o'clock on Friday morning. Denin, who was divorced two weeks since in Indiana, has married Fred. From the strange and unnatural sights our "traveler" has seen, we strongly suspect he has not been here at all, but probably got his ideas of America from Mrs. Trollope or Martin Chuzzlewitt. If he did not visit us, he is, perhaps, the German whom we read about as boasting of his ability to guzzle seventy-five glasses (pints) of lager beer in a day, and he 'no doubt viewed "American Society" through the medium of a keg,.of lager. Hear what the journalirt says : A European traveler, who lately visited America, states that nothing is so interesting there, as to study the attitudes and positions assumed by gentlemen in society. Every attitude is a gymnastic feat, or rather a succession of fantastic poses. The most general position is, to place the feet upon the mantel piece, or up againit the stove pipe, but in all-cases higher than the head. Being on board of a Mississippi steamboat, he had an opportunity of witnessing some astonishing feats by the gentlemen on board. Hearing a very ener getic pounding on a piano in the ladies' cabin he en tered it, and found a tall, gaunt, wiry feenle seated before the instrument, singing "Bail Columbia," with a voice more remarkable for stentorian powers than for good quality; while the listening gentlemen were arranged in the following tableaux: Four of them had secured the pillar supporting the deck of the cabin, and their eight legs were placed up as high against it as it was possible to stretch them. A fifth had stretched himself out on the sofa, his legs-dang ling over the side. A sixth, having secured. a seat next to the performer, had placed his legs upon the itistrunton while the lady eyed his boots with a most sentimental air. A. seventh (not finding any better place besides, the, floor for his feet,) laid his .heels upon the 'shotil4eis of the foregoing one uithout in curring the former'ir - ditirileastire, libße still another gentleman made &footstool of t gie seat of : his chair, sit ting on its back and balancmg...himself against the wall. Upon the instant that the tidy finished, all the gentlemen in the cabin gave testimony of their approbation by pounding most energetically with fists, canes, umbrellas, and heels, against every sub stance which ensured a loud sound. In the most refined society it is the custom for the gentlemen to bring a jack knife along for the purpose of exercising his skill upon the articles of furniture, from which they chip off large pieces, then whittle them into smaller ones, strewing the carpets with shavings. Ladies who arc in the habit of receiving much company, guard against having their rosewood furniture abused by placing a basket containing pieces of various kinds ,of wood upon the centre table ' and the gentlemen, with r!..fey excebtions,.take the hint and respect the fart-Ile/ire. Wear a ShawL If you want to be in fashion, wear a shawl ; if to ladies, an attraction, wear a shawl; if to sheep and cows, a terror, or like shanghais in full feather, or even rags upon the heather, wear a shawl ; if your hips are badly moulded or your shirt and vest unfolded, or unpleasant to behold, wear a shawl ; if you are courting some fine lin net, wear a shawl—you might wrap your lassie in it—in your shawl. Its like charity on pins, and hides a multitude of sins—although it causes grins—does your shawl. If yon want to be a dandy, wear a shawl—or have a cover handy, wear a shawl. In a word, it is a most useful article, as you may wrap your feet, head, body, knees, make a seat, a blanket, a bed, a muff, a pillow, a wrap-rascal or a Scotch plaid of your shawl. In our perambulations through the city, we notice some very tasteful articles'of shawls for gentlemen. They are most fanciful in style and color, and can only be excelled by the fanci ful manner in which they are worn. Wear a shawl by all means—or if you can't wear a shawl —wear a blanket—wear something ridiculous, and be in fashion. M E DIC A t CENSUS RETURNS. It embraces all the meteorologi cal observations from some four hundred differ• out parts of the United States, erabracing the differences in the thermometer, the amount of rain fallen (which differs very much in certain sections of the country,) and an accurate account of different diseases, mortality, &c., throughout different parts of the country.
