There is no material change to note in our
money market since our last. There is not much
paper on the streets, the banks doing nearly all
that is necessary to supply the trade. Trade has
fallen off a little ; but the arrivals of produce,
and shipments eastward were very large. We
have never before seen so much activity on our
wharf at this season of toyear as for the last
two weeks, and in the oduce line there is no
falling off yet.
Within the last twenty-four hours, over a quar
ter of a million bushels of coal have left in
barges for tile markets below.
In New York there has been rather more in
quiry for money. but there has been an adequate
supply, and there has been no change of rates
which may be quoted at 7 per cent, on call, and
10(4 12 on first class mercantile paper, with an
occasional negotiation of high grade notes at 9.
For several weeks past there has been quite a de
crea,e in the importation of dry goods; last week
the imports being half a million less than during the
same period last year, when they were eery light.

The question of the repeal of the Leery LOWS is
again being agitated in New York, and the Chamber
of Commerce hale, with great unanimillPreeom•
mended their repeal ; the merchants, as a body, are
also represented as being in favor of such u move
ment. on the ground that it etribarusses trade and
cann o t b e enforced. We do not believe that n repeal
of the Usury Lair! will set everything right, and
that in case of its abolishment there will lie no more
stringency or bankruptcy. There things will unhap
pity occur, whatever laws may be enacted on this
subject. The unanimity manifested, however, among
the business portion of the community in relation to
it, leads us to believe that the next. New York legis
lature will repeal the law. with what benefit or injury
remains to be seen.
The Philadelphia Ltd yet- of Wednesday, states
that the money market in that city has been very in
acti‘ e, though the rates are fully maintained. There
is very little first class paper making, our merchants
keeping their business operations very close. We
bear of nothing being done under 12 per cent., from
hich figure the rates run to 2 per cent., owing to the
credit of the paper offered. The hanks are keeping
very rinse.
The stock market is represented as also being
much depressed. and the sides very limited, only
about 5,17,000 being sold on Tuesday :
The market closed very dull, with little or no d'u•
position to operate for a rise. The sales making are
mainly to outsiders, who are taking up such lobs fur
permanent investment as the necessities of holders
tore() on the market.
At Cincinnati the money market is very tight, and
d good paper 15 plenty on the street at 12n13, and
some cases id have been paid, when the Sc
ruritc
was good. Currency is very scarce, and no
immediate prospect of the supply being increased.
This state of affairs lends to a general inconvenience
in business, and it renders a very general contraction
necessary.
The Exchange market is dull at last quotation
he demand is quite limited.
Nit K. —At Louisville, up to the 3,1 inst., 39,-
617 hogs had been slaughtered this season, and
11,73 U remained in the pens. The number killed
"lows a diminution of about two-thirds, compar
ed with the business of last season, when cold
weather set in earlier and farmers were anxious to
get clear of their stock in consequence of the
scarcity of corn.
The receipts of pork at Cincinnati up to Dec.

~41, 5 0 compared with the same date last season.
