WE are undor obligations to Hon. Lion Boyd, of Kentucky, for important documents. The Abolltionibta in Cowiell The Eighteenth Annual Convention of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society commenced in Philadelphia last Tuesday. The attendance was slim, but the menibers made up iu zeal what they lacked in numbers. We recognize no new names among those who figured in this delightful gathering. There were Jame , Mott, Lucretia ?Ott, Robert Purvis, black man, )J. Miller Mu. Oliver Johnson, Rev. Mr. Grew, (black men, probably.) and Edward M. Davis--all of whose names can he found on the roll of any similar convention for the last twenty years. This body has been styled the Mutual Admira tion Society,'from the fashion they have of soft soldering each other for sticking to the good cause " through thick and thin--joined with plenty of unpleasant expletives against the Church, the State. and the Press for not uniting with them in their crusade against the sum of all villainies." From the 18th annual report, we learn the so ciety has been nineteen years in existence : that in that time it has expended 5150,000: has cir culated millions of anti-slavery newspapers, tracts and other publications, and has held not fewer than 2,&00 public meetitp. The object of this society was the Abolition of Slavery. The report asks, Has it done anything towards ef fecting this object' Crew reflecting man can answer for himself, and he will surely answer it in the negative. Has any state or territory abolished slavery since it, labors commenced N(.. Has the condition of the boridmen been bettered! We think not. tm the contrary, af ter this fanatical crusade commenced, many southern states have been compelled by their own safety, to pass laws that previously were never thought of: and Virginia and Kentucky, which before at least, discussed the propriety of emancipation—the latter very near passing an act to that effect—ever since the Abolition so ciety commenced its labor of hate have ignored the question entirely The report admits this, but says ^ victories are sometimes fruitful in dis aster to conquerors," and takes consolation from an anti-slavery majority in the popular branch of Congress Ten years before the e.xi'tence of this society, there was a ma, onto sufficient to pass the Missouri restriction—and we don t be lieve there can he votes enough mustered now to restore it. The principal speakers on the first day were C. C. Burleigh, Rev. Mr. Grew and Lloyd Gar rison, at whose hands the Constitution and the Union suffered some hard rap. Garrison was in favor of a dissolution of the Union, fur which he assigned a variety of reasons, One was Because, while the slaveholders have a terri tory that they can call their own, we are denied our right to a land that belongs to us unless we wear a padlock on our lips. The Southern man can come here and defend slavery, but the North ern man who attempts to speak of freedom, will find only the Union which brings a rope about his neck. Such a Union is a despotism ' Mr. Garrison feels outraged at living under this ‘• unholy compact " he had better leave. A resi t . majority of the people of the United States—of the North—prefer the Union as it is : and we are sure an equal majority would consent without a tear to his emigration to some foreign land. where possibly he can live without •' putting a padlock on his lips." Indeed, it' it were neces sary, we believe every Garrison abolitionkt in these States could obtain the unanimous con sent" Ve withdraw. Suppose he tries it on, and goes to Mexico or the South American States, where Mr. G. says they have no '• peculiar in stitution." They are the round matches, too, and well made. It is a new invention, and certainly equals for ingenuity anything we have seen of late. We would nil vise all who like to see curiosities and useful in ventions to drop in and see it. It will well pay for the trouble, and no charge is made for a look at it. The half a million matches, at present rates, would amount to about $47. Deducting he cost of the pine wood, which is but a trifle, it would leave $42 or $43, as the money earned by the machine and one man and two boys in a day. The patentee will dispose of, at low rates, nearly all the western and south-western States. Mr. Eaton. No. 80 Fourth street, is agent for the sale of rights. It is estimated that twenty million gross of boxes of matches are used in Pennsylvania in a ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPERS From MeaSTS. There is some excitement springing up. but it is not on the Derneicratic side of the House. The opposition have the majority, and upon them rests the re• sponsibility. The Southern Know Nothings are in a gtrait, and are perhaps laboring under more excitement than any other division of the House. The election of Banks, an Abolition Know Noth ing, (Inds the existence of the order at the South, and its members will he compelled to surrender unconditionally to the Democracy—recognizing it as the only national party in existence. The ballutings for Speaker last week sur• seeded each other with much quietness, nn evi dence of feeling having manifested itselt tto Thursday morning Mr Marshall's name Iva , withdrawn from the list of candidates On Fri day. after the L'd3d ballot. The Democrat- , con tinue wanimou , for Richardson, giving him throughout about 73 votes. tit - course Mr. Banks' vote is exclu ,, i‘ely from the northern Staten, and if elected, it will be recognized as a sectional triumph. Such a spectacle has never before been witnessed in Congress. it has never before been attempted to organize the House un a strictly sectional basis. The delay in the organization of the House defers the receipt of the President's Message and the Reports from the Heads of Departments, causitg, a general dullness to pervade the city. Consaltations looking to the election of Speaker are the order of the day, and combinations to elect nr defeat this or that candidate, effort the tidy subject for gossip. The contents of the President's message are so carefully concealed, that Ow omniscient correspondents of the press iu tlii?4 city, who always possess exclusive infor- ination on every subject, du not venture a sur mise..,or indulge in a guess with regard t,. recoMmendatiorp+ So far as the real bueiueso of thti: session is concerned, a still longer delaj would; be of no great consequence , nothing is ever accomplished till after the holidays, and if the I-louse completes its organization by that time, it will answer quite us well. The public inter&ts are not suffering material injury, and the Treasury really a gainer. So every evil has some rompen, ating good. The African , have rented a large hall near the centre of the city, which is known as the Repub lican Head Quarter.. when• the private consulta tions of this sectional organization are held, and their plans matured. This is a new feature in the history of the Abolition party. arid is one of the mitinifestations f the systematic cfreo-t , fit leaden to combine all the N , rthernState'. into a sectional party. It seems, too, that it has re ceived some accessions to its strength here, the rumor, being current that F. B. Blair has avowed himself an adherent to its principles and policy. Probably this foreshadows the future course of the Van Berens: the hopeful prince John played directly into the hands of the Sewardites during the last canvass in the State of New York Another accession here is IP B. French. a can didate for the Clerkship of the House, who has abundantly qualified himself for this step, by treachery both to the Democratic party and the Know Nothing order- It Was surmised here that the telegraphic ac counts of the difficulties in Kansas were greatly exaggprated, and that they had been forwarded here tit this moment to effect some object in con nection with the organization of Congress. Stib scaluept accounts justify this view, and make manitkat the propriety of the President in wait ing for the full written accounts of the affair be fore he proceeded to place the United States forces at the disposal of the Territorial authori ties. It seems to have been a dispute between two squatters about a claim to a certain tract of land, both of whom were emigrants from north ern States, one from Ohio and the other from Penniylvania. The free State men, it is admit ted, rescued a prisoner from the hands of the Sheriff, and resisted the execution of the Terri torial laws and authority of the Sheriff: but they have done the same all along, and there was no more provocation at this time to use force than uu other previous occasions. The Senate is awaiting the action of the House, its daily sessions being little more than an assembling of the Senators and an adjourn ment. On Saturday Mr. Sumner presented the petition of Commodore Joseph Smith, praying relief from the decision of the Naval Retiring Board, placing him on the Retired List. This is the first move of the Retired Naval Officers to hring their cases before Congress, and will prob- I ably be followed by others. It is the general impression that some discussion on this subject will be excited in Congress, but that the decision of the Board will stand the test of examination. It was to he expected that every retired officer would be dissatisfied, and the clamor is less even than what might have been anticipated. the mail closes at three o'clock, I am COM pelletUto finish my letter before the next ballot, now lh progress, has been pronounced.
