THURSDAY MORNING- ... :; DECEMBER 13 This article has suddenly assumed a new im portance. A reference to our quotations will show that a very large advance has taken place. It is well known that saltpetre enters largely into 'the composition of powder, but it may not be known that all our supplies of this article are imported from foreign countries. Calcutta fur nishes a large part of this importation. Since the European. war has promised to need all the powder that can be made in Great Britain, the Government of that country has prohibited its export to any other than the English market. This prohibition has been carried so far that a reqsel which bad loaded at Calcutta for the Uni ted States, was obliged to give up this part of her cargo. Thrown thus upon our own resources, we must to& for a remedy within our own border. The stock in the United States is very light, and when this is exhausted we must either forget our pop guns, or look for the means of firing them to ourselves alone. Saltpetre is known to exist inthe U. S., chiefly in Virginia, Term., and Kentucky. As early as the year 1812 supplies of this article were carried on the hacks of horses and mules from Mammoth Cave to Pittsburgh. The close of the war, and the consequent facilities for the importation of the article, soon closed the doors on the trade with Mammoth Care. The time has come when it must be renewed, and the new source of wealth thus opened to Kentucky is eminently worthy the attention of capitalists, both at home and abroad. We have not room to speak at greater length on this important subject, but the suggestions which we have hastily thrown out may serre ft) call attention to a new source of wealth to Ken tucky. They say the ELncralc OIL Is the finest medical combination over pre pared, neither offensive nor injurious, but effectual in all the above and many other cases. Some honorable nod Leary buslneai firms have, it is true, sold some of the old (turpen tine, bituminous, or owl tar, Le. kc.) external applications, until their customers returned bottle after bottle, with the remark that " the remedy was worse than the ialtt;" yet such men have never recommended nor given countenance to thew. lint see some of our best merchants ordering more every ten days, and uheitys giving additional testimony to the value of this wonderful discovery. That a great many ladies are using it as a medicinal toilet article for themselves and their children, is well known. It cures all Pimples, Blotches and Eruptions on the face and neck, In so short a titter, you would scarcely credit it. It frequently reduces a painful dwelling in two hours; bas done it In half an hour; I cured many effectually in six hours.
