urday, December Ist, 1855, at 11 o'clock, A. Si. After some
discussion, the following resolution, offered by It. Biddle
Roberts., - .}:aq., was adopted:
Resolved, That the Democrats of the several Wards,
oroughs and Townships be requested to assemble at the se
several places of meeting, on Saturday, December 15th, 1855.
and elect Delegates to meet In County Convention on thp
Wednesday following, (the 19th ittst.,)-nt the Court House, in
Meaty of Pittsburgh, at 11 o'clock A. 11, for the purpose of
selecting Delegates to attend the Democratic State Conven
tion be held at Harrisburg, on the 4th of Marsh next.
The following resolution was unanimously adopted :
Resolved, That the thanks of this Committee Lo tendered
to Messrs. Bryson tk Skirls, the g e ntlemanly proprietors of
the St. Charles Hotel, for their kJ miners and liberality in fur
nishing us with so comfortable and convenient place for our

N. B.—The times of meeting, as heretofore appointed—
the Townships from 3 to 5 o'clock, and the Wards of
the two Clues and the Boroughs from 5 to 7 o'clock, P. XL
Night before last, a drunken rowdy went into
our press room, and knocked the form of our
second page into " pi." That accounts for the
lack of reading matter yesterday morning. The
rogue is in jail, mud likely to stay there for some
time. But that don't distribute our typo and set
it up again. We will have all right in a day or
two more. A loss of sixty dollars is unpleasant,
for the rowdy, of course, is worth nothing.
The New York Evening Post and numerous other
papers that would rather make political capital
than tell the truth, are charging Gen. Pierce with
taking an active part in the attempt to make
Kansas a slave State There is not a word of
truth in It. No United States troops are yet
ordered to take part in the difficulties. When
help is needed to sustain and execute the laws,
and prevent civil war, no doubt the President
will do his sworn duty. That duty is to see that
the laws are faithfully executed, and the pence
preserved. But to say that the President is at
heart in favor of every law he is bound to execute
is a falsehood. That he may only enforce such
laws as he likes and leave all others to be violated
is a gross absurdity We might as well confer
on the Executive all legislative powers at once
If a recognized Legislature of a territory enacts
hail laws the remedy is for the people to elect
another Legislature t.. repeal them. That Mis
sourians took a fraudulent part in making the
present laws of Kansas there is no doubt. lint
Reeder might have prevented it. He might have
said that the election was vitiated by the fraud.
and refused certificates to any of the members
elect. instead of that he gave them certificates,
addressed a message to the liody when met.
vetoed some of their acts. and in every cuitimiary
way recognized it as a Legi,lature. Their acts
are laws, then, and must stand as such until re
pealed.
But abolitionists say that they must be nulli
fied by civil war And bloodshed : and that the
President. is in favor tif those laws if he disc
charges his sworn duty by endeavoring to pre
serve the peace. But nothing has yet been done,
and the latest accounts indicate that there is nit
danger of succor to the counsel , of abolititiniits

[THE MAYDRALTY - We publish the following
communication at the request of an old friend,
who claims a hearing :]
Me. EDITUR—A communication appeared in the
Morning Poet the other day recommending Samuel
A.. Long, Esq., fur the Mayoralty. We think the
name of Mr. Lung the best yet proposed, and have
no doubt he could be easily elected. He is well
known to our citizens as a gentleman of capacity and
intelligence, and would make a highly creditable
chief officer for our city. We should like to see him
ran as a Citizens' Candidate, and permit all parties
to unite in testifying their regard fur his many ster
ling qualities of head and heart Let his friends
unite in bringing him out at once. OLD LINERS.
But the publishers of the (' hronicle is not
seem quite satisfied with this arrangement, and

to hay, does either gentleman conducting that
establishment expect that something personally
pleasant to himself is going to turn up "if
the elements are well managed. It wont do this
year, neighbor. It is too bite to make that
point. Next year will du better .
But, to be candid, we know nut what right the
Chronicle has to take the democracy in charge.
In October it was laboring against them : and
we have seen no evidence of such sudden
i repent-
mace as its present aspirations imply. Two can
didates in the field for Mayor are enough—a
citizen's candidate and aK. N. candidate. It is
well known that we are uu fusionists. But for
just this once, under all the circumstances, we
are content to g, fur a suitable and proper citi
zens' candidate and a new man. The old line
whigs and many of the republicans treated us
very fairly last fall. We can reciprocate now
without any bargain. It will save much trouble,
and makes a sure thing of it.
But we are for rotation in office. No one man
has a right to bn quartered un the public treas
ury fur life; especially when he promised a year
ago to give somebody else a chance after one
year more. We hope our neighbors of the
Chronicle—very good men they axe—will turn
right in and help do things right this year.
HEAVY DAMAGES AWARDED.—Mrs. E. C. Hud
son has obtained a verdict of $4..100, in the Su
preme Court at Lancaster, against the Pennsyl
vania Railroad Company, for injuries to her hus
band, resulting in his death, in lti34. In Feb
ruary, 1854, during a severe snow storm, and
when the railroads were heavily blocked up with
snow, a train of cars left Lancaster about tiix
o'clock in the evening, for Philadelphia„ but
when they had gone about four miles they stack
fast in the snow, but subsequently became disen
gaged and commenced backing towards town,
when they came in collision with another train,
which had subsequently left Lancaster, injuring
the husband of plaintiff, iu consequence of which
he died.

Lwellyn M. Owynne, an estimable member of
he Cincinnati bar, sided on Saturday last.

Isaac Mickle, Esq., of the Camden, N. J., bar,

Democrat," died in'that city last Saturday. "
Susan Denin, who was divorced two weeks
since in Indiana, has married Fred. Huntingdon,
a banjo player in Christy's Minstrels.
They have a joke in California that the mem
ber elect to the Legislature from Yuba, thinks
he is elected to the United States. senate, and
has gone to Washington to'claitu his seat.
A heavy storm prevailed throughout the East
and West last Saturday and Sunday. We expect
to hear of disasters on the Atlantic and Lake
Wm. Arrison was brought before Judge Park
er, on Saturday, and withdrew his plea of " not
guilty," and put in a special plea of ctutrefolz
convict, or once in jeopardy. His trial was fixed
for last Monday.
Mr. M'Laughlin, formerly of this neighbor
hood, has been appointed Commissioner of Claims
for the State of lowa. We commend Mr.
M'Laughlin to the community of Dubuque, as a
gentleman of probity and intelligence.
Prof. Charles Davies has been appointed Pro
fessor of Mathematics in the State Normal School
at Albany. He is the author of a number of
works on Algebra, Geometry, &c., and for a
number of years was Professor of Mathematics
at New York.
A young woman, named Sarah Smith, was ar
rested on Sunday night fur street walking, and
committed to the station house, where she made
four different efforts to commit suicide by tearing
her skirt into strips, and making out of them a
hangman's cord.
Azariah H. Simmons, one of the firm of Swain,
Abell & Simmons, publishers of the Philadelphia
Ledger, died in that city on Sunday morning last,
after a brief illness, aged 48 years. Mr. S. was
a practical printer, and commenced publishing
the Lodger in 1836, out of which he made an
ample fortune.
Twenties altered from 2s, of the Trenton Bank
ing Company, New Jersey, are being circulated,
dated March 1, 1855. Centre, vignette female
with basket in hand, cow standing near her : on
the left end margin, female with horn of plenty

Prof. Blackman, of Cincinnati, performed
remarkable surgical operation in that city, on

The Legislature of Virginia hvll its sessions
biennially, hut the business accumulates so over
whelmingly that the belief is that annual i.essiuni,
will have to be resorted to. The present session,
which is allowed ninety days for completing its
work, will, it is believed, have to be extended.
A number of other States, including Ohio, have
the biennial sea , ion system, but we believe are
all heartily tired of it, and are discussing the
propriety of returning to •'first principles

considered in her prime, and it is rare that one
combines so ninny good qualities as an artiste
talents of a high order. which hese been
cultivated with great care, she possesses rare
vocal endowments that have been wonderfully
developed within the last two years Those who

for instance, were astonished at the wonderfrl
accession of volume' and compass The lower
register of her voice had become as powerful as
fine mezza soprano or contralto, while the upper
tones, so far from being impaired, were even
more flexible and brilliant than before In other
respects Mlle. Parodi stands deservedly high in
the estimation of connoisseurs; her renderings
of the must difficult pieces may be pulled fault
less. The performance• of such an artiste are
well calculated to improve the musical taste in
our community, and we trust that those who
desire to improve will not oils the opportunity
in this instance.
MeaILLA VALLEY.—Thisvalley, which with a
strip of land nearly half the way across the con
tinent in that latitude, cost this country $111,000,-
OW, is likely to turn out another California. It
k now said that the river beds. and the rocks and
hills of that valley are all " lousy " with silver
and gold. Iron and copper are said to abound
also. Among the certain results of that bargain
we may enumerate the following:—let. We got

brandies of the Democracy in Missouri have de
termined to fuse. "The Anties and Bentunites
convened la t night, uud concluded to elect two
Senators. Benton and Atchison are sacrificed.
tlreen is to be one of the Senators, and Frank
Blair, Gardenhine, ur Tom Price, the other—
most probably, Blair. They also resolved to
fuse in the next State election. The meet again
to-night, It is settled that two Senators are to
tie elected. The day to go into joint session is
nut yet settled. - A late editorial in the St
Louis Republican would seem to indicate that
something of that kind was on the tapir.
PRESIDENTIAL—PubIic opinion seems to be
very much divided on the Presidential q uestion.
The Hamilton (Ohio) Telegraph avows its prefer
ence for Hon. George M. Dallas for the nett
Presidency. Then we have the Monroe (Pa.)
Democrat, which favors the nomination of the
Hon. Richard Brodhead for the same post, and
again the Montgomery (Pa.) Watchman has
raised the name of James,Buchanan to its mast
head. There will no doubt be plenty of gentle
men who will consent to run if their friends in
sist on the matter. One thing is certain, the
nominee of the next National Democratic Con
vention will be the next occupant of the White
House.

turns have been so far compiled as to give the
entire population of the State, which is three
millions four hundred and sixty-six thousand,
one hundred and eighteen, (3,466,118.) This is
oxclusive of the population of the Indian reserva
tions, which will add about three thousand. At
the last census, in 1860, the population was
3,096,394. The population of New York city is
620,810. The population of Brooklyn, including
the late city of Williamsburg, is officially an
nounced as 194,2'26—an increase of over 64,000
since 1850.

Doctor Durbin's Lecture To-Night
It may not be necessary to remind those who
were present on Tuesday evening, and listened
to his graphic, interesting, and, at times, start
ling observations on the condition and destiny of
the Turkish Empire, that he lectures again this
evening, on another portion of his travels in the
East. The " Peninsula of Mt. Sinai,' full of
classic and sacred memories as it is, will be ren
dered doubly interesting in the bands of the
learned and able lecturer, who has visited these
Bible Sands. The Association deserves to he
liberally sustained in their noble effort to elevate
the character of OUT . public lectures, by engaging
such eminent talent as Dr. Durbin, and we trust
the Hall will be crowded to its utmost capacity.

p o wer of Russia is exhausted, and demonstrates
that, however crippled the trade of the empire
may be, and however isolated from the other na
tions uf the world, its powers fur defence and in
jury are not necessarily impaired, much less de,
, troyed. It shows that for the purposes of in
ternal trade a paper currency may prove a
tolerably fair substitute for gold, and argues
with manifest reason that the destruction of
200,000 men, which is the number of soldiers
estimated to have perished in the Crimea. cannot
have exhausted the military resources of an em
pire counting sixty millions of inhabitant.. It
goes to show, in fine, that however signal the
achievements of the allied forces have been. they
have as yet done very little it' anything towards
destroying either the army, or the material re
rourees of the Russian empire.
From a careful perusal of our late foreign pa
pers, we are forced to the conclusion that there
is as yet no tangible prospect cif peace, and that
everything, so far at least as Russia Is concern
ed, indicates the indefinite prolongation of the
war. It seems to he reduced to the simple ques
tion—Will Russia or Western Europe be first ex
hausted.' The allies are slowly but terribly an

Tue POST OFFICE DEPARTMEXT.—The entire
receipts of the Poet Office Department for the
fiscal year ending on the 30th of June last, are
stated at $6,373,044, being $350,000 in excess
of the receipts of the previous year. But the
extension of the service and the increase in the
expense of transporting the mails have been
proportionately increased, and caused the out
lay to exceed the revenue. So that there is
yet something wanted to render the Post Office a
self-sustaining department. Taking into view
its benefits to all classes of people there is no
service to which an appropriation should be more
cheerfully accorded
