The President stated that Council had been con. venedfor the purpose of fixing the place of holding 'the eleetionin the Third Ward, and presented an ordinance relative thereto, which was read three times and passed. Mx. Kier presented the following report of Com mittee to 'whom was referred the subject of an exam - fixation of 'Mr. Jos. Lowry's Steam Fire Engine. The.POn. Select and Common Council: Gents :—The Committee to whom was referred the subject elan examination of Mr. Jos. Lowry's Steam Fire Eberle ' , beg leave to report as follows : On Tize4ay evening, 4th inst., the Committee met at the Rooms of the Board of Trade, in connection with Messrs. Pears, Leech, Updike and Wilson, of the Board of Trade, and Messrs. Ten-Eyok, Col lingwood. and• Marshall, of the Board of Under writer& Mr. Isaac Jones in the Chair, and Mr. John A. Wilson, Secretary. Having had a very general ex change of views relative 'to the matter under con sideration by the committee, Mr. Marshall offered the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted: "That the Committees of the Board of Trade, Councils, and Board of Underwriters, invite Messrs. Jas. Thompson, S. S. Fowler and James Nelson to unite with their joint committee, in a private trial of Mr. Lowry's Steam Fire Engine, and that they be requested to give the committee the advantage of their advice relative to the mechanical construction, its fitness for the purpose for which it is invented, A and general utility.' - Mr. Lowry named for the time of exhibition, under this resolution, Friday afternoon, 7th inst., at half past two o'clock. And, in compliance with the sense of the resolu tion, your committee met upon the ground designated, corner of Liberty and Wayne streets. It is proper hero to state, that under the directions of James Nelson, Esq.,Superintendent of the Water Works, the capacity o f fire plug, at the south-east earner of Liberty and Wayne streets, has been much enlarged, especially with a view of supplying Mr. Lowry with wafer for the exhibition of his engine. The engine placed upon the ground, an attachment of one stream from the corner of Penn and Wayne streets and eight from the plug on the corner of Lib erty and Wayne, using the ordinary fire hose of the city engine companies, were used to supply the engine. In ten minutes after the appearance of smoke at the top of the chimney, the water was forced by the engine out of a two inch nozzle attachment, and in a very few minutes this enormous stream of water was forced a. distance of 196 feet, carrying with it the entire distance, sufficient force and volume to be of efficient use upon or at a fire, and was continued for twenty-64 minutes, with but 60 _lbs. pressure. The two inch nortlo was removed an replaced by one of one-and-throe-fourth inch in diameter, and again the powers of the engine tested with equal success as before, forcing a stream of water 236 feet ; in each instance flooding the street with water, fully and most convincingly demonstrating to the commit tee the entire ability of the engine to discharge from either of the nozzles used, a stream far exceeding in quantity and efficiency fur extinguishing fire, three OT few Rand Engines, such as are used by our Fire Department. But the very great capacity of the en gine con be more fully comprehended when it is un derstood that-in addition to the use of a or 2 inch stream, four additional ones of equal size each, to gallery streams of the ordinary Hand Engine now in use, on be used at the same time. At no time was there more than 90 lbs. pressure of steam during the trial. The engine in order for use, weighs five tons. Your committee would, therefore, beg leave to recom znendtb 'your bodies, and most earnestly to our eiti ..v.,ens,Zthe•Loirry Steam Fire Engine, - as a triiimpli of of our own mechanics, worthy of your attention and favorable notice.
