MEMO
PITTSBURGH POST.
TUESDAY DECEMBER 11
TROUBLE in ROANOKE COLLEGE, VA.—From all
accounts it appears that a sort of civil war is
raging in Roanoke College, Va. A large portion
of the students have rebelled against the author
ities of the institution, and have succeeded in
winning over to their cause a portion of the
faculty. The difficulty originated in the dismis
sal of a student for not attending recitation.
The students conceiving that au important prin.( iple was involved in this transaction—that it in
fact trenched upon their rights as a body, made
the cause_ of the expelled member their own, and
deciaretivar against the faculty. As a conse
quence the recitation halls were deserted and
everything like study ignored ; a procession
formed which paraded in disorder the streets of
Salem; indignation meetings held in the chapel;
the building plaacarded with << student's rights"
and surmounted with a flag; inflammatory
speeches made; pledges sealed never again to
attend Prof. Halsey's recitations, and. to have
the dismissed student reinstated at any risk.
At this stage of the proceedings, a meeting of
the resident members of the Board was called,
and negotiations opened between the belligerent
parties. The truce resulted. in a compromise
which divided the faculty, a portion siding with
the students, whilst the other, embracing Profes
sor H. and the professors of Modern Languages
and Natural Sciences, considering that too much
had been yielded to the refractory students, de
clined performing duty until the whole matter
could be referred to the trustees. And thus the
battle recommenced and with renewed vigor.
'file students being strengthened by the alliance,
wore now confident of success, which no doubt
they consider complete upon learning that the
dissenting professors had withdrawn from the
Faculty. For thew facts we are indebted ti
correspondent of the Lynchburg Virginian.
