E. J. B. IIONTWIttIit GILLNIORE & MONTGOMERY, PROPRIETORS AND EDITORS. MONDAY MORNING Meeting of the County Committee of Correspondence Pursuant to notice given, the Democratic County Commit toe of Correspondence mot at the St. Charles Rotel, on Sat urday, December lot, 1855, at Ii o'clock, A. M. After some discussion, the following resolution, offered by R. Biddle Roberta, EN., was adopted : Resolved, That the Democrats of the several Wards, Boroughs and Townships be requested to miserable at their several places of meeting, on Saturday, December 15th, 1859, and elect Delegates to meet in County Convention on the Wednesday following, (the 19th inst.,) at the Court House, in the City of Pittsburgh, at 11 o'clock A. M., for the purpose of selecting Delegates to attend the Democratic State Conven tion, to be held at Harrisburg, un the sth of March next. The following resolution was unanimously adopted : Resolved, That the thanks of this Committee be tendered to Maws. Bryson k Shirts, the gentlemani v proprietors of the St. Charles Hotel, for their kindneas and liberality In fur nishing us with so comfortable and convenient place for our meeting. BASIL. W. BLACK, Chairman. N. B.—The thew of meeting, es hertgulltru uppolutett— the Township. from 3 to 5 o'clock, P. 1., and the Wards of the two Cities and the Boroughs from 5 to 7 o dock, P To Merchants and Others We are prepared to print on a letter * sheet copies of prices-current of the Pittsburgh mar ket. The merchant ordering them can have his card intarted at the head of the list of prices. ATTENTION t directed to the first and fourth pages of the paper this morning fur interesting miscellaneous, commercial and news matter. THE MAYORALTY, We have been told that many who signed Mr. Voles call are now signing a similar and strong er one for Samuel A. Long. Mr. Long is our man, if we are to run a citizen's candidate. We are assured that Mr. Volt promised last year not to run again if the Democrats would help to elect him for that time. Let every man be held to his promises. r, THE PRICE-CURRENT The merchants seem to take hold of the new paper of the above name with a good deal of lib erality. At a meeting of the Merchant's Ex change on Friday last, the following resolution was offered and unanimously adopted : Resolved, That having seen the first number of a new paper called the Pittsburgh -Current, and designed to be devoted to commercial and mans facturing interests, we take pleasure in recommend ing it to the liberal support of our merchants and business men. It is a kind of paper that was much needed here, and we have full confidence in the ca pacity of the gentleman who edits it to make it a useful and acceptable commercial organ, and one worthy of support and success. Speakers of the House We publish a list of the Speakers of the Na tional House of Representatives who have been chosen from time to time since the organization of the first Congress. It will be interesting at the present juncture, as a contest is going on which promises to rival the session of 1649, when Howell Cobb was only elected after sixty-three ineffectual attempts. It will be observed that Pennsylvania has not had the honor of having a Speaker of the House for sixty years. notwith standing her delegation numbers, and has for a quarter of a century numbered, one-tenth of all the members. During that time Kentucky, with scarcely one-third her representation, has had the honor for seventeen years ; Virginia for thir teen, North Carolina for six ; and Tennessee for six years. This is manifestly unfair. Nor can it be urged in justification that the Keystone Stone has not sent to Congress the proper timber out of which to manufacture a Speaker Pennsyl vania has had in her delegation some of the ablest men who have figured in the halls of leg islation: she has been represented by J,lin Sar goant, Wm. Wilkins. by Charles J. Ingersoll and Richard Biddle—men who stood in the very front rank of their respective parties. Another noticeable thing in the list of Speakers is the fact that in the last fifty-five years Demo crats have filled the office forty-five, and the Op position but ten years ; and while the Democratic candidate always ran as a Democrat the Oppo sition were known as Federalists, National Re- Publicans and Whigs. If there is one elected by the opponents of Democracy during the present session, he will have yet another alias, and will more than probable be known as an ••American." The English House of Commons may sit with out a Speaker, but our House must elect one, as he is expressly mentioned in the Constitution. and it is held that no business can be done until he is chosen. There is no provision as to how he shall be chosen, and it is therefore possible that should there be no choice in three or four days, a resolution may be adopted making a plurality sufficient to elect. Such a resolution was passed in 1849, and Howell Cobb, of Geor gia, was chosen by less than a majority under it. A PLATFORM The following resolution was introduced in the caucus of the Democratic members of the House of Representatives of Ccngress, by the lion. J. Glancy Jones, of Berks county, in our State. We have never rend a resolution that embodied more in so short a space. It is a complete plat form for the Democratic party in this State, and throughout the Union. Upon that platform our party must enter the presidential contest of 1856. The people will approve it. It contains sound and true doctrine, and is in fact the substance of democraey. It was fitting that it should come from a Democratic son of old Iterks county, who is now one of the soundest and ablest men of our State. It was unanimously adopted by the caucus, and we commend it to the perusal and study of every Democrat. Here it is : Resolved, That the Democratic members of the House of Representatives, though in a tem porary minority in this body, deem this a fit oc casion to tender to their fellow-citizens of the whole Union their heartfelt congratulations on the triumph in the recent elections in several of the northern, eastern and western, as well as southern States, of the principles of the Kansas- Nebraska bill, and the doctrines 'of civil and re ligious liberty which have been so violently as sailed by a secret political order known as the Know Nothing party ; and though in a minority, we hold it to be our highest duty to preserve our organization and collikkune our efforts in the maintenance and defeffffii: of those principles and the constitutional rights of every section and every class of citizens against their opponents of every description, whether the so-called Repub licans, Know Nothings or Fusionists ; and to this end we look with confidence to the support and approbation of all good and true men—friends of the constitution and the I'nion throughout the country. Mire. SINCLAIR FORREST.—A San Francisco correspondent of the Providence Daily Tribune, gives the following account of the late Mrs. Ed win Forrest : Mrs. Forrest that was, Mrs. Catherine Sinclair that is, is perhaps better known to theatrical fame here than any other person. She came here bringing the sympathies of the people of the At- Lando States. She has tilled her role and must be nearly ready to retire, she has been successive ly a "star," a "manageress," a '• fast woman and a " strolling player," and is now going from town to town murdering plays for the amusement of the miners and mountaineers. The public blame her and pity her. THE GOVEANYENT STELMER N 14.0.11.84. 0 1/0 of the ■ix authorized by Congress to be built, will be launch ed from the New York Navy Yard on the 24th of December. It is built under the direction of George Steers, celebrated for his skill as a naval arohitect. „Foneof the six will then be afloat, and when finished will be equal to any war steamers in the world. The fifth will soon be launched at Nor folk, and the sixth at Washington. We hope this Congress will provide for at least six more being built next year. Gen. Cass was appointed chairman of this commiitee, and the other members comprising it were Messrs. Mason, Money, James, Fitzpat rick, Slidell and Evans. The caucus seemed to be little puzzled to de termine the political sentiments of the opposi tion. Finally the following gentlemen were put duwu as Know Nothings, viz: Messrs. Houston, Crittenden, Adams, Clayton, Bell and Wilson. It was presumed by this caucus that the fossil re mains of the Whig party would prohablyoct with the Democracy.
