cannot say whether he struck first or I first ; all I
struck with was my hand; I was not making any
arrest at the time ; I was only there at the request of
Mr?. Weaver; it was a quarrel between ourselves; I
had been drinking ; Canghey then commenced stab
bing me In the house; it seems to me that I left the
house, and he followed me and stabbed and stabbed;
went ()lathe back door, and up a little alley ; he stab
' bed, stabbed, and stabbed, until some one said I was a
dead man; I do not believe there was any one who
assisted and encouraged William Canghey in his
assault on me • I ran from him, and have very little
recollection of anythinguntil you (Aid. Major,) came
there; you was the first person I recognized; I re
collect seeing Mr. Finch there; I ran from Caughey
when he =tacked me, but cannot recollect that he
made any remarks; I did not go to the house for the
purpose of making an arrest I had no warrant to
arrest any one; I believe it was the intention of
Canghey u to kill and murder me; I drank liquor in
the house; I do not know that any liqeor was
drank after Caughey came in ; all in thah house
ware under the influence of liquor; I cannot say
that I know a man by the name of Cress ; I did not
go for thnprtrpose of arresting Cress ; to my know
t. .ledge *ere Was no one .aided, abetted or assisted Wm.
Oinghey-in his assault on me: to my knowledge, I
did not strike at Caughey, at any time, with anything
' but my fist; have no recollection of striking him
with a chair; I was under the influence of liquor; I
do not know or recollect what was the cause of tho
quarrel between us ; I do not think that Canghey, at
.atty thee, struck me with his fist; (the knife taken
from Caughey was here shown to deponent) this, I
,am positive, is the knife with which I was steeled ;
I saw it in Caughey's band. THOMAS M'COV.

Wall street, as well an the political world, has an
anxious eye upon Washington as to the question of
the payment of the three million drafts duo from our
Government to Mexico. The impression in well-in
formed circles Is that these drafts will he paid, not
withstanding certain liens and drawbacks are urged
on the strength of the alleged non-fulfilment of all
the treaty stipulations on the part of Mexico. The
only real difficulty will be to know to whom they
should be paid, for the revolution which drove Santa
Anna from power left everything In to much confu
sion that it is difficult to tell the genuine from the
spurious assignees. or draft. holders. Santa Anna
borrowed the money and gave these drafts for it.

Comptroller of State, virtue of the powers veste.4

The result, as with the other bogus concerns recently

utterly unworthy of credit. The ease has been hand
