Kerr„ liuperinterident of the Public) Schools of Alleghebr county, a copy of his reportfor the past year. "Tlie'decument is a very interesting one, but entirely too long for our columns, and we therefore can only make the follow lag abutted : The Superintendent entered on his duties about the middle - of December, 1854 As his predecessor, from a variety of wises, bail. been able to visit but a few schools, the present incumbent deemed it ,advisable not to attempt, forthe remainder of the achool year, the fulfilment of that important duty, es it, would be Impossible to visit more than half of the schools. As a substitute, the establishment of "Teacher's Institutes"•was undertaken, and with the aid of sev eral educators, six Teieher'S Institutes were held du ring the "Wier, addresses were delivered In nearly every township, associations were organized, and the most happy results are anticipated. The next thing undertaken was the establishment et a Normal School. An engagement was made with B. Curry, A. M. to act as Principal. The number of pupils enrolled was about forty. In re gard to the institution, the report says : rNSTRUCTIOR. —The instruction given at the, Normal School was designed to be thorough, espe-' cially in the elementary parts of each branch studied, keeping constantly in view our motto, " maksjutstie.. slowly." It was never contemplated that from this institu tion should emanate the "profound mathematician," or the " critical grammarian,"—nor, on the contrary, that Its inmates should plunge into various branclek,' merely . tte oStsin soma sort of acquaintance with: r4i l :o l,, #:ltiir their adaptation towards discip: lining the mind, and developing its power. Its grand object was to elucidate and enforce, not only the science but the art of teaching. In order to achieve this most desirable purchase, teeture , were delivered by the Superintendent and rincipal upon the belt and most approved modes of imparting in struction in the branches required to be taught iu our common schools." ' , - Ti Lectures ware also delivered by other gentlemen. At the. oleo of each the pupils were subjected to a thtaWujilt asharination in all the branches they pre ••posed teaching. During The Month of June the Superintendent :iisititd the schools in the two cities and some of the boroughs, with a view of becoming familiar with their management 'and plans of instruction. He thinks the instruction is thorough and discipline salutary. One serious cause of general complaint Is the irregular attendance of the pupils. The school edifices of the cities are praised as being well adapted to their purpose, tea of the thirteen Wards boasting of magnificent structures in their school 'buildings. Much gratification Is expressed at the es tablishment of the High School. . The examination of teachers throughout the eounty commenced on the 13th of August last. The teachers, it seems, preferred to be examined away from home, and the attendance at the various places appointed was made up In part of teachers from ether and distant parts of the county. The impres sion got abroad, and was not without its effect, that the object of the Superintendent was to embarass and. confuse the teachers offering fur evseilestion ; but this he disclaims, and arnws that his purpose was simply to rid the profession of quacks. The mode of examination is detailed, and it is stated that since the first of June more than five hundred applicants have been examined; sixty-four received the perma nent certificate, and three hundred and ninety the provisional certific ate. The average ability of those who passed examination Wes"' good." as distinguish ed from " very good." Those wha were rejected were utterly - incomPolent to leach, as to made plain by the specimens given by the Superintendent of their written exercises in orthography, grammar, tic. It is the design of the Superintendent to visit every school in the county before the close of the echool year. The style and location of school houses, fene rally, cannot be praised; but there is an evident improvement in this respect. The wages of teachers have been increased $5 and $lO per month over that given last year. There are many schools vacant, however, the directors prefer ring to wait until they can get good teachers. The teachers in various parts of the county are aiming to improve themselves and gain the public confidence. The Superintendent recommends that the number ,of directors in each district be reduced to three, and that they be paid $2 for each day's attendance, not 'to exceed twelve days in the year; and that the Pittsburgh High School law be so modified as to ad mit scholars from other districts on payment of a pro rata share of the met. Veep o Look-oat for Nits!—On Monday evening, a Cello* named Dodds, or Dodge, entered the store of Mr. Gallagher, in the Fifth Ward, and after pur chasing some trifling articles, gave a counterfeit $lO note of tbeMerchants' Bank of New Haven, Conn., in payment, receiving seven or eight dollars in good money. From there he proceeded to the store of a Mrs. Rauffmtua, where ho also tendered another note of a similar denomination on the mane bank, but the woman, suspecting it to be bail, refused to receive it, and the fellow left. Mr. Gallagher soon after dis covering that the note was bad, had the man arrest ed, and taken to Alderman Wilson's, where, upon searching his person, $3O more. of the same money, was found in his possession. Dodge then offered to , compromise the matter with Gallagher, by giving him ten dollars in good money, which offer being Sc. eepted, no formal information of the crime was kruide, and the Alderman allowed the rogue to go. We understand from one of our bankers that a large amount of this counterfeit money has been put in circulation lately, and it would be well to keep a look-out for it,and for the person engaged in passing it. Bard, School Association.—At the request of Dr. Bard, Presiding Elder of the /ti.. E. Church of this district, quite a respectable number of delegates from the city charges, South Pittsburgh and Birmingham, assembled In the Smithfield M. E. Church, on Thurs day evening, the 29th nit, for the purpose of taking the requisite steps for organizing upon a solid basis a permanent Sunday School Association, auxiliary to the Parent Society of the S. S. Union, to be com posed of the various schools throughout the district. After the presentation and adoption of come resolu tions expressive of the desire for renewed efforts In the cause, and of their hearty concurrence in the proposition for bolding district conventions at stated times, in this district, it was resolved to hold a gene ral convention on the evening of the Ist of January, 1858. A committee was also appointed to call a 'MOM meeting of the friends of the S. 8. cause on the 13th of December, should they deem it expedient, to be addressed on the subject by popular speakers. Death of George Ledlie.—Our fellow-citizen, Geo. _c.,glatts, Esq., died on Monday, at Louisville. Mr. edlie left the city a few days since for New Orleans. but was stopped at Louisville by some form of bilious absurder, and the first accounts were somewhat alarming to the family here. But on Friday de spatches announced improvement in his condition ; Saturday, despatches announced still further im provement, and all apprehensions were quieted. On Monday, however, a despatch announced his death. His body was brought on, yesterday, by the Ohio And Pennsylvania Railroad. A Dangerous ifau.—A colored fellow, named Bid dle Moore, was sent to jail yesterday, by Alderman Major, for threatening to kill Sarah Frederick, at tempting to cut the throat of Catharine Randle, and for other offences of a kindred eharacter. He appears to be a dangerous fellow amongst the women, but 13 1 . 0 0 g at of harm's way for some time. Arrow of a Burglar.--John Rutherford, a colored i ra li v id uA l, supposed to have burglarionsly en tered the house of John Robinson, of Braddock's Field, last spring, and stole therefrom $34 in money, and a certificate of deposit for $l9O, has been ar rested at Owensville, Kentucky. Re will be brought .back to this city for trial. Abolition of High Bchool.—We observed yes .terdny petitions hi circulation, to be presented to the next Legislature, asking that body to abolish the High School of this city. Coualderabtt 'however, was experienced in getting signatures to gibe dccumento. Allegheny Mayoralty.—The Convention to nomi mete a Democratic candidate for Mayor of Allegheny sarill , meet this morning in the Town House. The dategatuailected are equally divided between Messrs. Ottersonsmd—Neillie. The sae of china and queensware at No. 114 Smithfield street, opposite the Post Office, will be closed out this day; 811 those in want of such goods would do welt to attend, as bargains may be ex pected. Nuaaiagton'• Panorama.—An afternoon exhibi tion of this• beautiful painting will be given to-day at three o'clock, for the especial benefit of families and those who cannot attend at night. I . ..
