THURSDAY M0RN8G......-NOVEMBER 29 ANOTHER LANDMARK DISAPPEARING—The Last nj ri, ux h.,l! Gorden. —There was a few days ago very beautifu l end ex•ensiee sitramer resort in the upper part of the city known as Vauxha'l Cavite it was situated on the Bowery, oppos ite Sixth street, and occupied nearly an entire block of ground in length and width. The grounds were neatly laid out, the place was en livened with trees, and in summer evenings the various walks traversing it were illuminated with thousands cf variegated lamps. Ladies and children, accompanied by their male proteotors, were happy to pass an hoer in the Garden, tak ing ice-cream and other refreshments. At this time the garden Wh.3 some distance oat of town, but it was once a pleasant walk to reach it,. Business, however, in its progressive march to the suburbs, overtook Vauxhall Garden and the property became greatly increased in value. At first, one piece of it was taken for a house-lot, and thus began the curtailment of `te fine public promenade. The ground once broken, serious encroach ments followed year after year. A slice of the garden was taken from the Bowery bide, and then another on Lafayette place. The Astor Library and several dwellings despoiled the ap: pearance of the garden on Lafayette Place Notwithstanding these Enppinv, what little of the place that remained was still kept open as a garden ae if to remind us that such a thing bed existed. Recently, within six mouths, the hand of im provement has grasped the last remnant of old Vauxhall. It is now entirely destroyed, scarcely a vestige being left, except a email tree on the rear, which the woodman has spared for a few days—to mark the spot. The property belongs to Mr. Wm. B. Astor, and be has already erected on the Bowery front of the garden some eight brick stores, each four stories high. And the laborers are now digging down into the bowels of the earth, alongside of those buildings, to lay the foundations of more lofty etrnctures of the same kind. The first encroachment upon the Vauxhall I Garden, was the erection of a circus building for an English equeetrain named Cooke. He sent to this city an English dramatist named Amhuret, to select a spot for the erection of an amphitheatre on a large reale. Instead of leas ing a lot in the lower part of the city, which wits probably on account of not being acquainted with the looalitiee, he lures ted a large amount in the erection of a place of amusement at Vauxhall. This was about the year 1E34. Cooke came from London with one of the best circus com panies ever brought to the United States. The circus was opened brilliently, but the expense was so great, that it was given up after the first season. The company then went to Baltimore, where they performed. The building, however, VMS destroyed by fire -bile there, together with all the property of Mr. Cooke and his company including the horses. Several attempts were afterwat de made to re suscitate the circus at Veuxhall, but all failed . Large numbers have arrived at New Orleans. and from thence proceeded up the Mississippi river to various points in Missouri. But the most syste matic effort of the kind has been the introduc tion of ten thousand immigrants into Texas by a single corporation, called the German Emmi grant Company. This Company was to be reim bursed for its undertaking out of one half the lands granted to the colonists, and the alternate sections reserved from settlement by immigrants. Prompted by this inducement, it chartered some thirty vessels, which, iu the years 1854 and 1855, have conveyed the immigrants from Germany to Texas. It has expended more than $600,000 in providing for the immigrants, $120,000 being the coat of surveying and dividing the lands. But while the Company was thus fulfilling its stipulations the Legislature has withdrawn the land grants. What nay envied this we do act know, but it appears pretty evident that the slaveholders of Texas do not like the Free Sol predictions of the Germans. Much has been said concerning this by partisan orators and newspapers, and the fear is ehtertined that when Texas shall be divided these Free Soil Ger mans will outnumber the slavebolders, and thus farm a free State.
