_PITTSBURGH POST.
MONDAY MORNING:
For tho Pittsburgh Morning Post
TO SHELLEY.
to B. M. O.
Misguided, blighted Shelley, how my heart
Is pained for thy sad wanderings! Thy words
Are rife with sympathy and glorious hopes
Of man's redemption from oppression's thrall,
And yet have ruistot in them—Thy wild strains
S. sweetly mournful that the list'ning soul
Finds bliss inlgrief and grows in love with sadness,
Are blent with notes of blasphemy. Thy thought
On wing too daring, far, too far, hath roved
In Doubt's dark region, 'till thy brain grew wild
{Slit!' strange imaginings, and startled Reason,
tlrasptng amid the gloom, clutched Ennon fast,
And deemed that she teas Heaven's bright daughter
—Tatrit.
Thou wort deceived, poor Shelley, and thy lips
Were swift to utter what thy heart believed;
And thou didst link the darkest thought, to song
Which genius made immortal, and alas!
Clothed with a gorgeom , drapery, a robe
Lovely m Angel's pinions, thou !mitt made
Error's dark form look brilliant and serene
As Twilight's gentle Stars ; and men hare scanned
Her glorious seeming; :Qs. tune looked and LOVED;
And in their impious adoration, flung
Ilea; vu's garnered hopes, like worthless weeds away,
And thus like thee hnve perished. Who can tell
How many with ass rich, proud hearts as thine,
Ilatc followed thee to ruin, meanwhile dreaming
They tracked an Angel's footsteps to the skies ?
I could weep to think what baneful work
Thou mayst have wrought, and all unwittingly,
With the fund hope that thou wort lensing Mall
An heritage of Truth, replete with pun er
Tu purify, to eles ate, to bless,
And disenthrall the world of straggling thought
That yearned for freedom, and still writhed in chains
Red math the rust of ages and with blood,
The blood of inartyrel thousands freely shed,
But shed almost in sand

THE, EDUCATION or GIRLS.
No one will dispute the assertion that the ob
ject of edUcation is to prepare pupils for the
efficient discharge of the duties of life. The
first question is, What are the duties which the
girls of an expensive or fashionable school will
be called upon to discharge when they have taken
their places as members of' society ? Let us see.
They are the children of wealthy parents, and,
in all probability, they will he called upon to sus
tain the following relations:
First—They will be wives. A wife is the in
timate friend, and constant, life-long companion
of a man.
Secondly—They will be mothers, and as such,
the natural guides, instructors, and examplars of
children.
Thirdly—They will he mistresses of house
holds, in which capacity they will be directors
of the industry of others, purchasers of number
less commodities, and guardians of the health,
comfort and happiness of many people.
Fourth/y—They will he ladies, and, as such,
the leaders of society, the lawgivers of manners
—as such, they ought to 1,43 agreeable, instruc
tive in conversation, accomplished in the arts of
entertainment, self-possessed, and superior to
fashion and affectation.
Ftfthly—They will be more likely than not to
experience, at some time in their lives, a reverse
of fortune ; and then they should be able to rho
something for their on in subsistence.
Finally—They will Inane the honor to be mem
bers of the illustrious Human Fatally ; to be wor
thy of which high rank in the universe they
ought to be high-minded, honorable and just ; in
capable of hatred, jealousy and fear ; abounding
in love and charity to all who share with them
the glory of being human ; beautiful in their
persons and lovely in their lives.
These are seine of the relations they will sus
tain ; these are some of the duties they will be
called upon to perform.
Now the great questions occurs : What is the
education that will prepare them for these Va
rious relations and duties We attempt to an
swer the question.
A strong and healthy constitution is, of course,
a woman's first necessity. She needs it, if pos.
sible, more than man. To the development of
her physical system everything else must lie ac
counted subordinate, the greatest possible intel
lectual advantage being too dearly purchased by
the smallest possible physical detriment. To
secure the healthy development of a growing
creature, it i, rule necessary to let nature have
her way, giving free opportunity for th e et ,j,,y.
ment of that boisterous sport which the young
naturally delight in. and which is absolutely iie
cessary for their growth. (link therefore,
should lie confined to the desk not more than
three boars a day, and, as they grow elder, the
Laws of health should be one of th e i r studi e .
But young ladies need limn. than a healthy
body : tinny need an educated body—they should
lie graceful as well a- strong To secure

Finally—but most important of alb—there is
the education of the soul : the heart, the nasal
nature; the conquest of Felf, the supremacy of
pritwiple, the habit of magnanimity Wonla are
of little avail on thi, branch ‘,l the subject.
Moral excellence is the result of many circutn
stances; there is no loyal road o r beaten track
that leada to it : if, like nuns and monks, we de
vote ourselves to it. exclusive ae l tii, ition, it
elude , our grasp ; it often exists where nothing
has appeared to foster its growth; it is often
wanting where every circumstance seems to have
conspired to produce it : the SION or saints go
astray: the children of sinners become orna
ment of the race. Gomlnesn is catching: its
sole source is the human heart. Teachers whose
own souls are noble, can ennoble the Fouls of
their pupils: every lemon recited, becomes, in
their hands, a lesson or fidelity, honesty and
truth. Virtue goes out from them continually,
and enters into their pupils continually. And,
to tell the truth, this is all the moral philosophy
we are able to believe in ; and we know no
means of grace" except Truth exemplified in
the conduct of a human being. See how these
Christians love one another!" It was ha(
which touched hearts and made converts.
These are but imperfect hints. But we believe
that girls educated in the spirit of our remarks
would be likely to become intelligent and com
panionable wives, judicious mothers, agreeable
members of society, and noble-minded women.
