MONDAY MORNING
A FORTUNE is A SINGLE YEAR.—A gentleman
from Crawford county, Ohio, writes that he has an
extensive building unoccupied, a six horse power
steam engine in complete running order, and wishes
to procure an interest in Kendall's new invention,
and establish a Shingle manufactory. He will either
lease or sell to responsible parties, or enter into part
nership (furnish timber and power) with some man
competent to run a machine and take charge of the
concern. He states that timber is cheap and plenty,
and that the demand for Shingles at all times far ex
ceeds the supply, and at the present time they are
selling at fire dollars per thousand. The following
is an exhibit of the net earnings of one of Kendall's
Shingle Machines for a single year. One machine at
the lowest possible estimate will make 25,000
shingles per day, at five dollars per thousand, foot
up $125 for o day's labor. Counting but three hun
dred working days to the year, the gross proceeds
amount to $37,500. Deduct twenty cents per thou
sand for manufacturing, $1,500—51,20, for timber
and preparing s9,ooo—leaves a uet margin of $27,-
000, or the Snug little sum of $9O per day. An op
portunity like this seldom occurs, for making a for
tune in a - single year, and this is the cause of so
many purchasing rights for the purpose of manufac
turing, which cannot fail to be a profitable invest
orient.
But a few more timber counties in this State remain
unsold, either of which would secure to the purchaser
a fortune. In a number of instances several persons
Lave called to purchase a right for the same territory
after it had been sold, and have offered the lucky
pnrchaser two hundred per cent _ premium for his bar
gain. Particulars in reference to the above can be

Judge Thomson, for the defendant, in the ease of
the Erie and North East Railroad Company vs. Jo
neph Casey. Inured the Court to dissolve the admoni
tory order, granted by hir Honor, Judge IVooduard,
at Chambers at Philadelphi a , on the lath of Novem
ber, A. D., 1855.
A similar motion teas male by Judge Thomson in
the case of the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula
Railroad Company vs. Joseph Casey, in which a sim
ilar admonitory order hail been granted.
Mr. Casey, the defendant, opened the argument in
support of the motion, prefacing his remarks it ith a
suggestion that his personal inherent in the contro
versy was ,o slight, that he . Mould nut be held an
swerable to the maxim concerning him who argues
his own cause. Ile then proceeded to show that the
order of November 10th was improvidently granted.
It was rirtually 0 special injunction, and as such he
proposed to treat it. It had the effect of a special
injunction, and should not hate been granted except
on the same terms. The order could only be made
on the ground that the Act of Assembly declaring
the charter of the Erie and North East Railroad
Company forfeited, was unconstitutional. This was
what no single Judge of the Court could do at Cham-•
hers. If the Act was constitution a l, the plaintiff,
hail no existence as a corporation. and had no right
.. .Li appear as such. They were a nonentity. The
granting of the admonitory order insulted, therefore.

A DANCERut S CurNTERFEIT.- —A new and don
genius counterfeit, on the Philadelphia Bank, has
just been discovered to be in circulation. It is an
alteration from a S.: note to a $2ll, and the alteration
is so skilifltily done that persons unacquainted with
the notes of tint bank would lie likely to be de.
ceived. This note, which is a genuine altered,
may be detected toy holding it to the light and
nerving the difference of shading in the figures s2tl,
which is lighter than the general shades of the note.
A more certain mark of detection, however, is in the
slitterence of the Vigilette. On the fives, in the up
per left corner, there ie a vignette of two reclining
female figures, with the tioddess of Liberty between
them, and on the right hand of the note, a female
figure, mated, with a bird and globe in her right
hand, and spear in the left hand. In the twenties
there are two heads of Washington above, two fe
male figures, sail vessel on right, houses on left,
spread eagle below : a likeness of Franklin on the
right end of the note, and a bust of William Penn
on the lelVenir As this :atonal note has the picto
rial representations belonging to the fire dollar hills,
persons may easily see that it is not a twenty, as it
purports to be.
A ForNntrzo.—On Friday morning, a female in
fant, apparently about via weeks of age, was found
on the door step of a house on Penn street_ It was
snugly wrapped up in a shawl, and laid in a basket;
it was dressed very neatly and seemed to have been
well taken care of. When the servant, on opening
the door, discovered the little stranger, it was sleep
ing soundly, and when awakened commenced crow
ing very lustily. Pinned on the child's dress, was a
little note, which stated that the father of the child
was a man of standing in the community, and that
the infant would he reclaimed whenever be saw pro
per to render justice to the mother. The letter fur
ther desired the fancily where the child was left, to
treat it tenderly, and call it " Mary."
As it has fallen into the hands of a charitable and
amiable family,.hotb these requests will be complied
with. If the highly improbable contingency spoken
of in the note does not transpire, the child will he
raised and educated by them.

FEMALE CoLLECE.--The monthly examination of th e
scholars at the Methodist Female Seminary, was
held on Friday evening, in the chapel of Christ
(M. E.) Church. The edifice was crowded by the
pupils, their parents and others. The exercises con
sisted of the reading of a variety of essays, poems,
6n;-itvomposed by the scholars. The whole affair
was very creditable to all, and showed that the Pro.
lessors hare good reason to be proud of the pupils
under their care. Although it is only a month since
this institution was opened, it is meeting with the
most flattering FUCCCSS. There are about one hun
dred and twenty pupils in attendance.

THEATRE.—Mr. Perry, a gentleman well known
as one of the best stock actors in this country, but
seinswltat of a novice as a "star," makes his first
bow t o a Pittsburgh audience to-night in the charac
ter of Othello. Those who have seen Mr. P. say he
resembles, in many respects, the lamented Brelsfurd,
both in his acting and prsonal appearance. If he
has the excellencies of the latl.2r, we bespeak for him

THE HANNIBAL GUARDS, a volunteer company,
composed entirely of colored persons, will parade in
this city on the 22d of February. The company al
ready numbers fifty members, and is increasing. A.

MADAME Le Pron.—Application was made in
the Court, on Saturday, for permission to remove
Madame Le Pugh, lately convicted as an abortionist,
from the county jail to a hospital, as she is now in a
condition that will very soon require the attendance
of the medical fraternity. If the request is not
granted quickly, another occupant will be added to
the jail without the formality of a commitment from
a Magistrate.

The Gasconade Catastrop he .
The St,. Louis papers of Friday are filled with the
report of the Committee of investigation of the Gas
conade catastrophe- There is a majority and minor
ity report. The Commission which has made the in
vestigation, was appointed by resolution of the Board
of Directors of the Pacific Railroad. The majority
of the Commission report that they consider the im
mediate cause of the accident In have been the high
rate of speed at which the train moved upon the
bridge. The Committee made an elaborate investi
gation, visiting the spot of the occurrence of the ac
cident,
and taking a mass of testimony as to the
facts in the case. The majority report that although I
they are of opinion that the bridge was unsafe for
general use "yet that its strength might hare been
suf f icient for the passage of the train at a speed not
exceeding five miles per hour." And this is con
sidered substantiated as follows:
"This Is sufficiently proved by the passage of a
heavily loaded gravel train at about five miles per
hour, which re-crossed empty at shout twelve miles
per hour, the weight of which when loaded was 114
net tons for the length of the broken span, whilst
the weight of the train, which would hare covered
the same span, was but 71 net lolls; and although
the engine of the passenger train weighed on the
strivers 3 net tons snore than did that of the gravel
train, yot the testimony goes to show an excess of
strength for a dead weight wore than equivalent to
this difference."
THE report on this calamity is the minority report
signed by Mr. Henry Kayser. "solitary and alone."
