Banner Statel! —The Illinois State Register says: ,
"The returns came in very slowly.''enough how
ever have been receivd to show that the banner of
Democracy, with vi tort' perched upon it, still
waves' over the prairie State. The Whigs have
sustained a regular Plo Alto defeat. •
The Democrats have done nobly. French and
Wells we elected by 5,000 majority. Smith, M . -
Clerrnand, , Wentworth, Douglas, and Turner, are
elected to Congress ;by majorities varying from,
hundreds to many thousands. The Legislature is
largely Democratic, and the county tickets have
been more than usually successful.
We confess that NN'e were not prepared for so
glcirious a triumph. ! We feared that "general apa
thy" had got the command of the Democratic ]
forte, but the result- proves that the Democracy
train under no such leader they are awake to their
interests, they know their duty to themselves, and
they have the energy and activity to perform it."

CALEDONIA.
Nine Daya Later from Europe
The news per Caledonia was not received at New
York until ei o'clock on Wednesday morning.
The Liverpool papers are filled with an account
of the visit of Prince Albert to that place and the
magnificent doings on the occasion.
The cotton market was without any perceptible
change. An improvement had taken place in the
manufacturing districts. Iron has risen in price.
The money market had fluctuated but little since
the sailing of the last packet.
The Britannia arrived at Liverpool on the 31st
ultimo.
Louis Bonaparte, ex-king of Holland, died at
Leghorn, of apoplexy, on the 24th ultimo.
The Pope of Rome has granted a general amnes
ty to all political offenders.
The debate on the sugar duties occupied two
days, and the government scheme triumphed by a
majority of 245 to 135. The result virtually abro
gates the monopoly, and places sugar in the same
category• as corn, by an easy deciention on the high
road to free trade.

A peris. paper (the Courrier de Francais) says
that the _Mexican government had demanded of
France and England their mediation, to put an
end to the war between that country and the United
States.

At Berlin on the 2:2d, Mr. Wheaton, the Ameq•

and Mr. Donaldson was received in private au

Owing to the visit of Prince Albert to Liverpool,
and the festivities consequent thereon, the cotton
market has been closed from the 2:iith tilt. till to
day; the market opened after the holidays vs ith nn
animated demand. The sales are estimated at
10,000 bales, mostly all to the trade. Very little
doing, either for export or on specoh a tion, Igo
change has been reported in prices; but those last
quoted are maintained with great firmness., A fur
ther fall in the value of grain has - taken place, and
harvest operations are proceeding rapidly. The
quality of the wheat is liner, and the yield greater
than last year. Since the Great Western sailed,
the arrival of produce has been small. Public sales
are at present declining. The business transac
tions on the 28th ult. were very limited. Wheat
declined Qd. to :Id. per bushel, and flour ficl.
per bushel from the quotations of that day.
Indian corn was in demand for exportation to
Ireland.
At Havre the cotton market was devoid of ani
motion.

rilfig WILSON PILLS, as a remedy peculiarly
j
adapted for headaches and dyspeptic affections,
are pretty Eencritlly known and esteemed in this
community; and the, proprietor, so often no he has
occasion to is rite for speak of them, can scarcely re
frain from an expression of his gratelbl acknowledg

to him. Ills feelifigs are the warmer from observing
the "beginning and , the coding''—thrown almost in
juxtaposition—of So 'many nostrums and kindred pre
parations equally loud in their pretensions, and
much mine industriously presented to the public;
while his preparation noiselessly advances, evert to
remote places, sottaliing,;red comforting the idllieted,
and permanently gralling itself upon the affections
of new frionds, dins continually widening the circle
of its useihlness. i Although well satisfied that his
medicine has, us i were, a principle of perpetuity to
it, yet he is obliged to his friends for the most sub
stantial cvidencelof.the fact.
In its natural history, if you please, the Wilson
Pill differs from Most other preparations in not being
originally made for sale, or with a view to pecuniary
profit; while as e l yery body knows, the greatest tyro
(as a general thing) no sooner begins to dabble in
drugs than he calls about for some cheap prepara
thin, or moat , genup,> as the phrase is, something—
anything that will sell. Often ho attempts it under
an assumed or fietitious name, as though conscious
his own were inslidicient to sell it. The difference
then between the !Wilson Pill and the preparations a
have just indicated,, would appear to be this: The
consciousness of; the value of my pill originated
the idea of platting them on sale for money, and at I
price. The consciousness of the value of money
originates in most instances the many preparations
