M. Spencer, murdered his wife in Jersey City, on

mitted 'suicide in Dover, N. H. last week, by cut
ting her throat from ear to ear with a, razor. No
reason assigned for the act.

desperately wounded in the engagement on the 9th
of May, lift New Orleans on the steamer Nlisson

dollars, for the arrest of William Dandridge Epes,
the murderer of F A Maier.
Scrixtmen.—A fellow named Benjamin Antho•
ny, has been arrested in Boston for swindling a num
ber of firms out of goods to the amount of $3 O :-
000. He went into the business extensively.

A JUDGE AND JURY HUNG IN EFFIGY!
'lt will be remembered that on the failure of the
jury to agree upon a verdictia Shelby's case, tried
at Lexington some two weeks since, they were,
discharged, and on the mrplication of his Counsel,
Shelby was admitted to'bail. Tlie following letter
to the editor Of the Georgetown Herald, gives the
only narrative we have yet,received of subsequent
transactions:
/Axis-oxen, Ky., July 13.
Mr. French:—The light of. this morning •diselq,
sed to the citizens of Lexington and Fayette coun
ty, nine ebiges, hanging immediately in front of the,
Court House, representing Judge Buckner and the'
eight Jurors who were for the acquittal of Lafay- 1
cue Shelby, indicted for the murder of Henry M.,
Itorine. Judge Buckner was represented in a false
face, and 'a head without any place for brains; one
hand resting upon his pocket, with the inscription
"sutural( on the reverse side appeared in large
capitals, "A JUDGE WITHOUT. JUSTICE."—
On each juror was written "Perjury," and on one,
"money gets me!" Some efforts were made to have
them hauled down before a crowd would.collect,
but the jailor who undertook it, was compelled to
retire; this being County Court day,. as soon as the
Court was in session, application was made for an
order to have them taken down; but it was refu
sed; the Court saying, " Ire had no hand in putting
them there, and ore will hare none' in taking them
away."
A few minutes before 11 o'clock, A. M., Capt.
Robert Wilson appeared at the window in the sec
ond story of the Court House, and addressed the
crowd which was very large, tria speech of some
fifteen minutes, in which he spoke in no very soft
terms 'of the judge and jury, affirmed that if Ho
rine had killed Shelby instead of Shelby killing Ho
rine, he would have been hung in less than 2.1
hoUrs; but here is a wealthy and aristocratic mur
derer, by the force of his money turned loose up
on society. Murder—foul, unprovoked and inex
cusable,' has been committed on an unoffending
yOung man in our streets, and this perjured jury
has let the murderer go out unwhipt of justice..
At the close of his speech he read several reso
lutions, which were adopted by acclamation. The
first resolution was that in five minutes after 12
o'clock, they would proceed to burn in the public
streets the "infamous jureits." The second 1 could
not hear. But the third coiled for a committee
to wait on Judge Buckner on his return from St.
Louis, and earnestly request him to resign his o f.
fice as Judge of the District Court. This resolu
tion was received with a perfect round of applause,
i.nd the committee immediately appointed, Cap'.
Wilson being chairman. He declared on his elec
tion, that it would be the proudest net of his life
to presetit that. resolution to Judge Buckner,"
A committee of nine was then appointed to take
down the effigies, which was done amid the roll of
martial music and the shoutsof the crowd. A pro
cession was formed under the direction of Mr. Lo
gan; the effigies were elevated on poles, and the
whole moved off to the tune of the flog•trie March;
after passing along several of the principle streets.
they formed a circle on Cheapsidc, and burned to
ashes the effigies:.
What is the state of the public mind when such

is very great_ There is to...be a meeting 'of the
young men to-night at the City flail, to collect all
the facts in connexion with the murder and the tri
al. What the ultimate• object is I do not know.

dentally came in contact with the Lens, ascend•
ing. by which accident she %vas materiately injured.
Her larboard wheel was shivered to atoms, and
the shaft brok en. The guard on the same side
was raked lore and ail. The hull also, it is thought
was somewhat damaged.

AWFUL ASCII y .--A dreadful affair of blood
took place yesterday atternoom as we learn, about
seven miles from this city, in St. Clair county,
iii the course of winch Mr. Jas. Duncan
and old and respected citizen, lost his life. It
would scent that the deceased, from some course or
other. had become obnoxious to his neighbors. and
that the latter had threatened to expel him from
the vicinity. After many threats, yesterday alter-,
ternoon was, selected us the time to carry out their
projected measure: hearing of which, Mr. D. armed
himself with a double barrelled gun, and await
ed their approach. About 5 o clock a body of
men, the number not stated, visited the farm of
M. I). and ordered him to leave the neighborhood ,
In reply to this demand, report says, the deceased
tired on the lynchers, and wounded one of their
number. The tire was returned from some tweie
ty-guns, and Mr. Duncan was literally blown to
pieces, This statement may be, in some panic
ulars, incorrect, but the main fact.s, we have rea
