Recent events in Mexico, and more especial

Having • solicited the President's authority to
concentrate upon that bonier fifty battallions—
each battalion to consist of six hundred men, to
be accepted as volunteers into the service of the
United States for six moths, unless sooner dischar

volunteer corps of the State of Missouri—to organ

where they shall receive arms, with every requi

TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE :NITSSOV
Fellow citizens: Our frontier is in danger. The

can further distinguish themselves for patriotism
and bravery. Twelve hundred volunteers are requir

Every good citizen will lend his aid in concen
trating a force to repel the attack of the Mexicans,
and to procure by arms redress for the attempt to
prevent the United States from asserting her claims
within her own territory. As an inducement to
enter the service promptly, the Missouri Volum
teem may be assured, that those who reach the
seat of war at an early period, may be employed
in active and hard service. Be prepared to fight.
Expect no light work. A brave soldier has no

TERRIBLE DISASTER IN
We are indebted to a gentleman of this city for '
the postacript to a letter from Mississippi, dated
May 8, received by a friend of his, giving the par
ticulars of a tornado which swept through 'Grena
da' in that State on the evening previous, which in
its unfortunate results, falls but little short of the
great hurricane at Natchez some years ago. The
writer states .that between twenty-five and thirty
persone were killed, and many others wounded.—
The sufferers were mostly children. The school
house of a Mrs: - Plummer, was blown down, and
that lady and several children killed. The male
Academy was also blown down, killing several of
the children, and wounding Mr. Sample the teach
er. The writer states that he has not learned full
particulars as to the persons killed. He mentions
the wife and two children of a Mr. Robertson,
that were killed by the blowing down of his house,
and one or two of Mr. Sakes children, and two of
Mr. Paines, as all that he could name positively in
addition to those whose deaths are previously enu
merated. The Baptist Brick Church was blown
down with all the houses north of it—the torna
do missing the busines part of the town, but swee
ping with death and devastation the private.reai
dences of the place. The whole town was clothed
in mourning, and the deepest distress and confu
sion was occasioned by this heart-rending occur
ence, Full particulars of the injuries and losses
could not be ascertained for several days.

OFFICE. NO: 21 MARKET STREET.
THE citizens of Pittsburgh continue to be offered
an opportunity to effect insurance upon their
property, by a Domestic institution located among
themselves, based upon domestic capital, andron
ducted by directors, in whose prudence, integrity and
good faith they can readily ascertain whether they
may repose that undoubted security which should
ever attend an assurance transaction.
To persons whose properly has already been dam
aged or destroyed by fire or water, the adSantage of
personally adjusting the loss with arf, institution AT
HOME; will bestrikingly erident. To those who suffer
ed by the Great Fire, this particular corporation need.
no recommendation. The prompt paynient of the
whole amount of its losses--st.sniT Two 'mamma
ruousarrn DOLLAIUS-h3 to them a sufficient guarantee
of future security. .
It is the part of all prudent men, however forttf-
nate, to anticipate calamity for the purpose of avoid
ing its effects. To suck as haye hitherto eschped, as
'
well as to those who hare sustained loss the facility,
of protection and indemnity, offered this instita- -
lion, will be the strongest inducement to avoid the
reflections and regrets which must be experienced
by those who suffer without hope, of restitution.• •

JAYNE'S EXPECTORANT
THIS medicine has already proved itself to be all
that it has been recommended, by those. who
have given it a fair test in this country, and the
demand for it increases daily. We have jnatlidtigl
of an important cure of Asthina, which Lai been
effected by the use of it in &neighboring
. town
the ease was that of a female who had for along.
time - been under the care of a physician, but had
received no relief, and her case was considered
hopeless. As a last resort she purchased a bottle -
of Dr. Jaynes Expectorant, which caused her to
expectorate freely, gradually eased her cough, and
rapidly restored her to health. We have no hesita
tion in saying that this preparation of Dr. borne.
for the cure of Coughs, Colds, Influenza, Asthma,
Consumptions, &c., is the most valuable medicine
ever offered to the American public. There is no
quackery about it—Dr. Jayne is one of the most
skilful practicing physicians; and where - yer his re
dons preparations have been thorongly tested, he
is looked upon as a great public benefactor.—

A N IMPORTANT CURE BY DR. JAYNE'S .
L 1 A LTERATIVE.-IVe have been infoimed by
Mrs Mahan, a grand-daughter of old . Gen; Wayne,
that she suffered for a number of years ftom the
growth of alums goitrous tumor of the throat, which
besides the deformity, produced both a difficulty of
deglution and of breathing. . Indeed, she says, the •
pressure upon the windpipe Ives so great as to pre- •
vent her from sleeping in a`recumbent posftion,
and often suffocation appeared inevitable. She alsos
labored wafer severe indisposition from Liver Com:.
plaint and Jaundice, for which she commenced the •
use of Dr. Jayne's Alterative, which she took for
six or seven weeks, and her general health was
completely re-established by it, and perceiving
some diminution in the size of the GoitrousTrimor,
she was encouraged to persevere in the use Of the
Alterative until every vestage of the painful:Tumor
was entirely removed. • • -
