To the Inhabitanie of P r ittkbtirgh, AlleghenY, and

OIJR attention has ibis day been directed to an ar-'

American," under date of sth March instant, headed
as above--and whlch , has also appeared-subsequently,
in several of the Pittsburgh newspapers. We hasten
'to reply thereto. 4 .
We find that thrtjugh these media we are successive
ly charged with flagrant:violations of the principles
of truth and jestict; but we are prepared to give you a
triumphant vindictitton of our character. I.Ve,howev
er, exceedingly regret that 'in so doing, we shall have
to allude to our teitpecteri cont.mporat in the "Pekin
Tez Company of i New Ydrk"—t heir position—their
history, and theirlmanner of doing business will ne.•
cessarily, in sorneldegree, have to come under exami
natien. All thoqwe can do is to endeavor to keep !
the following deve i lopments within the limits of y o ur
neighborhood; °Mug which locality, we trust, for the
credit's saire of iehom it may concern, the questions
at issue may Mrtuiin - undiscussed. Far from having
a malicious interitien in ivhat we are about to divulge,
we do so merely from the very justifiable motive of
self protection—We would fain - tender good fur evil;
this we sulemly rltlclarm i Taking this laudable stan , ri
we reply, Grßt,ta the charge as follows:
" They (The Clunon Tea Company) have publish

for word, the favnrable notices of the Pekin Compa
' ny's teas in all theileading journals of New York, and
other cities, siniplyaltethig the name of the Company
from the Pekin to the Canton Tea Company,"
And farther doWn in the column this charge is re
prated, though modified as fellowa:
"This handbill bears the impress of the Company,
and appears to tile been issued, if trot by it, at least
upon its author - It „"
Now we deny ever issuing—we deny ever author
izing—we deny ever perusing such a handbill.—
uly we cermet I always control the actions of our
azents, at a reunite distance, in relation to the meth:
ods they employ tia facilitate the sale of our Teas; but
as soon as we dis Cover any thing improper in this re•
stint. we invariably diScountenance it, and urge that
a strict regard to ironer and uprightness might charac
terise all the metals they use for their disposition.—
Bymne of our r4ote Agents, probably, the handbill
in question may bare been issued, but toe deny that it
ever had our saticti:on or authority.
We cannot, hoWever, dismiss this subject without
touching upon ihmorrility of these notices. They are
tepresented as erninating, spontaneously. from
.the
Editors of New York and other Newspapers, and to
arise from an ire tiression of the great commercial ar

the Pekin Ted qorapany. We beg leave to set you

for their insertio . When this was not literary the
case, the said '••fanorable noticed' were insetted in
co isideration of enexpensive advertisement being be
stowed upon the oh i rctre wherein such editorialsappeat
erl. All this are prepared to prove—list by the
admission of onei of their own Agents (Hamilton)—
secondly, by the advertising Agent they fotmerly em
ployed—thirdly. by the testimony of most of the Nets.
York Editors themselves. So much for their "favor
able notices in tha public prints."
The method we adopted in prosecuting our business
being essentiallyiat variance with any modification of
deception, we never resort to the publication'of such
notices. EVery business man in New York is well ac
quainted-with the Origin. as well as the merits, cf, such
editotiulism.ewitig to which its utillity lime has long
since ceased. andOt rather diminishes than adds to the
respectability Of.any New York establishment.
We next review the paragraph wherein we are
-charged as frost:latent imitators of the Pekin Com
pany. It will be (mind nearly at the head of the said ar
tide. It reads is follows:
"It is well known to most of our readers that the
Pekin Tea COrnit'any of New York. an association pf
heavy capitalists Pf j{tat city, have established agelt
cies in h'ekin an, Canton fur tire purposeof selecting
Teas, and puffin, them up thete, from whence they
are shipped siireat to the - Company at New York.—
These teas have 44:rosined a high reputation, and have
become the soh jr4t of frequent notices in the public
prints. The su4cess of this Company has induced
the organisation.Of another calkd the 'Canton Ten
Company,' wit," admit nisi they aro not importers. but
purchase their Tries from the promiscuous arrivals it,
New York:when! they ore pat up in a manner to im
itate those of Meg Pekin Tea Company."
J. FINNET, JR.
Now, in the lalter paha' this paragraph is stated a
falseltood so,glaring, that an attempt to support it in
any Atlantic eity.:,Vould subject any editor to universal
ridicule, and, in ;New York he would be rega rded as u
consummate kudos, if not an absolute mad man. We
I
are astonished tallied that any Pittsburgh editor, hav
ing access (es must necessarily be the case) to New
Yolk journals fei• years past. can be so deplorably ig
, norant of theT,ctithat the Canton Tea Company have
beenestabliShed:in New York rtve TESRS!—aud also,
that the Pekin Company have only existed TWCLVK
MuNTLlS!—and Mat the 'latter lonic was established
wholly in conse4vence of the success and reputation
of the former. SHe re then is a fraud truly unblushing
—nay, verily nbtiminable.
We are also rfllected on as being an inferior con
cern. because. '•We select our Teas from the promisee
-0119 cargoes whiOt arrive." How much more com
mendable to come out with the plain truth than to
resort to such vile falsehoods as appear in the begin
ning of lhe parn, irsph now under review. The words
are "The Pekin Tea Company of. New Yotk, an assn
citation of heavycartitulists in that city," "&c.—( Let
the reader refer.) Is it possible that- the inhabitants
of Pittsburgh cab swallow all this! In this city (New
York) every cowling-house lad. of fourteen years old,
knows - better. Let any individual who would satisfy
himself on the sObject, refer to the Gies of the Courier
and Enquirer, Jhurnal of Commerce, or Commercial
Advertiser,,whilh he may find at any large Hotel in
Pittsburgh, and ice, if in the lists of imported met chan
:disc, he can dilcover that any entries of Teas have.
been made at thh New York Custom House for such
a firm aathe "e'ckin Tea Company." We defy them
to prove lkal they ever received Teas direct from
China! Who ever believes such a barefaced .:user
Lion are deserved ly humbugged. As to the fart of
their hewing an 'agent in Canton," toe day it. Who
is het But theiidea of their having another in Pekin,
is on absurdity so monstrous, and a falsehood so gla
ring, as not to;, deserve consideration. Who ever
heard of Teas tieing selected and shipped at Pekin?
Outrageous nonsense!
We happen tO know that the "fine Teas which their
agents in Pekini and Canton select, pat up and ship
direct to N,ew ]fork," are selected in Front street, in
this city, at the !store of Beebe & Brothers, and other
'wholesale Orncers, ahipped thence by their carman to, l
the store 75 Fulton street, !henpecked in imitationof,l
' the Canton Tea Company's Teas by Frenchmen and'
Germens, in did. upper part of the building, brought
clown stairs nail thence dispatched to Pittsburgh and ,

' other places. i
Lastly—Wile is the association of New York cap
' itnlists. celled the "Pekin Tea Co," professing to have'
$500,000 engaged in the trade? The agents and
salesmen, Mesirs Douglass, Callender and Roe,
were previously; emplcyed at the New York Sun News.:l
paper establishtnent. Mr Hamilton, the out door a
gent, was formirly subscription clerk for Messrs Ed
round Charles &. Son's Bank Note List; and the only,
and exclusive rimier and proprietor of the wholeestab
lishment is Hehry Wykoff, publisher of a paper cal
led the "New York Republic," now extinct, and well
known to the World as a controversial antagonist of
James Gordon Bennet, of the New York Herald.
We exceedingly regret the necessity which compels
ds to come oui so promptly;—we are, nevertheless,
ready to preemie the proper affidavits, certified before
, khe Now York City and State authorities, in confirma•
