THE PEOPLE OF TIIE WEST /I AV E SPOKEN
There was, truly, a great gathering of the 'Western
People in Allegheny city, yesterday. We have heard
the number in attendant.° estimated, as high no
twenfi I five hitudred! The most conclusive evidence
to to the unanimitl,ns well as to the excited state of
public feeling now existing in Western Fennsylva
nia,on the Railiond queotien, is to be {mind, in the
fact, that the Delegates in attendance from diStant
counties were putty-rang bey,Md all espectation.—
F.rom the counties of Warren, Elk„Jeffers9n,
Cla
tioe and Venango . ,' their. Was nearly FOUR HUN
DREp.,personx io.attenclance--the l list a containitg
the names Wets shown to Us.
From-"old Westmoreland" there was a very hirge
' Delegithni in auentlunce; we could net ascertain the
number. The counties of Somerset, Fayette, Greene,
Washington, Beaver. Mercer, Butler, Crawford, Erie,
Armstrong, Indiana, Cumbria, Huntingdon, Mc
"'Kean end 'Cumberland, were all, and some of them
quite numerously represented. We must not for.
oy—
get AllegLe she too had at great number of Dele
-gates in II c IPn f iance. TWeNTT-ONE counties were
rerresented ;in' the Convention.. We think we may
safely assert that the Convention of yesterday, in point -
of numbers and respectlibilitY, has seldom been ex
ceeded in this commonwealth. The people were
indeed assembled in Council. Though thousands
took part in the deliberations there was but one opin
ion—bat one voice; all was onion and harmony. The
.
resolutlons speak the matured sentiments of,the wes
tern people; they have resolved that jestico shat! - be
done dierii; they too, have solemnly declared their lion
est and conscjentious convictions that every great into
rcstof 'the state will be promoted by the passage of the
bill granting the "Right of Way" and will regard
the reftri c al as grossly unwise in every point of view
which call be taken of the subject.
We:cannot believe that the Legislature, will longer
hesitate; we cannot,—we will not believe, until we ace
the recorded vole, that a majority of the House of Rep
resentaiii;es are opposed to the just and important
measure now pending Mote them.
The Convention at 10 o'clock, A. M., assembled in
the Market Square, Allegheny city, and was called to
orderby the Hon. Walter Craig, or Washington co.•
who moved that the Hon. ARNOLD PLUMER.
of VMuingo, be appointed Chairman, and Geo R
Riddle, Esq., of Allegheny and Thomas Salon,
Esq., of Clarion; Secretaries, for the purpose of or
ganizing the Convention.
.On motion of the Hon C . Myers, of CrlitiOn, a com
mittee consisting of ono delegate from each county
represented was appointed to select officers for the
convention., The chairman ap pointed tha following
committee, viz;
1. Hon. Q. Myers, Clarion comity.
