Tax TnEarax.--The performances at the Theatre
'fast night, throughout, we think, cannot be excelled.
Mr HACILITes Sir John Falistaff; Was inimitable
—the pirt, we feel confident, was never as well per
formed by any other actor, or better by himself. Mr
Monats as Prince Hal; Mr PORTER as King Henry ,
the 4th, and Mr FRPDI:MOO as Hotspur, "done'
exceeding!), well, in fact, we, have never seen the

were delighted. The House was crowded. To
night Mr Hscxxrr appears as Rip Van Winkle
and Col. Nimrod Wildfire. Look out for a crowd.
Persons desirous of obtaining seats would do well to
tall at the Theatre early this morning and secure
them.
Ex 9ex:tem.—The attention of our readers is re
spectfully directed to the advertisement of W W

To ,thilahabitants of Pittsburgh, AlltghenY, and
4e surrounding country.
AUR attention has this day been directed to an or
ticle, that appeared in the 4 TiUsburgls
American," under date of sth March instant, headed
as above—and which has also appeared subsequeptly,
in several of the Pittsburgh newspapers. We haiten
reply thereto.
We find that through thecae Media we are successive
ly charged with flagrant violations of the principles
of truth and justices but we are preliat:ed to give you a
triumphant vindication of Our Character. We, hefty
er, exceedingly regret that In so,doing. we shall have
to allude to ous respected contempt - trade& the "Pekin
Tel Company of New York"—tbeir positioh--thair
history, and their manner of doing business will no
cessarily, in sum: degree, have to come under exami
nation. All that we can
.do is to endeavoFict keep
the following developments within the limits of you,
neighborhood; out of which locality; we trust, for the
credit's sake of whom it may concern, the questions
at issue may remain undi.cussed. For from having
a malicious intention in what we are ahem to divulge,
we do so merely from dm very justifiable motive of
self protection—we Would fain render good for evil;
this we soletnly declare- Taking this laudable stand
we reply, first, to the charge as followsi
" They (The Canton Tea Company) Wm pUblish
ed a handbill, in which they have appropristed, Word
fur word, the favorable notices of the Pekin Compa
ny's teas in all the lending journals of sNew York, and
other cities, simply i altet log the name ,Af the Company
from the Pekin to the Canton Tea Company."
And farther down in the column this charge is re
peated, though modifind as follows:
" i his handbill bears the irnpress of the Company,
and appears to have been issued, if not by it, at least
upon its authority."
Now we deny ever issuing—we deny met author
izing—we deny ever perusing such a handbill.—
Truly we cannot always control the actions of our
rtients, at a remote distance, in relation to the meth
ods they employ to facilitate the sale of our Teas: but
as soon as we discover any thing improper in this re
spect: we invariably discountenance it, and urge that
etrico-egard to honor and uprightness might chnrac•
tense all the means they use for their disposit itm.—
By one of our remote Agents, probably, the handbill
in question may have been issued. but ale deny that it
ever had our sanction or aitthority.
We cannot, however, dismiss ibis' subject without
touching upon the morality of these notices. Thdy ore
represented as eminatin.,' spontaneously, from the
Editors of New York and other Newspapers, and to
arise from an impression of the great commercial ar
rangements. and general uppreciatton of the teas of
the Pekin Tea Company. We bee leave to set you
right on that subject. We are prepared to prove, on
oath if required, that every favorable notice in the
New• York papers, referred to. were WRITTEN by
the Pekin Tca Com/Piny TH VDNLVek,end that almost
in every case the said New York papers were, PAID,
for their insertion. When thi, was not literary the
case, the said ••fatiorabtc notices" ,were insetted in
ext.isideratinn ofan expensive advertisement being be
stntird upon the papers wherein such erlitoria Is appear
ed. All this wo are prepared to prove4fitst by the
udmission of one of their own Agents (Hamilton)=
secondly. by_the advertising Agent they futmerly em
ployed—thirdly, by the testimony of most of the New
York Editors themselves. So much for their "faVor-
Able notices in the public prints."
The method we adopted in peaseeuting our business
being essentially at variance with any modification of
deception, we never re.surt to the publication of such
notices. Every business man in New York is well nr:
quninted withtheorigin as well as the merits. nf such
editot 'ahem. owing to which its wittily here has long
since ceased, end it rat her diminishes then adds to the
respectability of any New York establishment.
We next review' the paragraph wherein we ore
charged as fraudulent imitators of.the Pekin 'Com
pany. It will be found nearly at the head of the snider
I=l =33
tide. It reads as follows:
.'lt is well known to most of our readers that the.
Pekin Tea Company of New York. an association of
heavy capitalists of that city, have established agen
cies in Pekin and Cantors for the purpose of selecting
Teas; and putting them tip there, from whence they
are shipped direct to the. Company at New
These teas have obtained a high reputation, and have
become the subject of frequent notices in the public
prints. The success of this. Company has induced
the organization of another sailed the *Canton lea
Company,' who admit the , they are not importers. but
purchase their Teas from the promiscuous arrivals in
New York i where they are: put in - e manner to im
itate thosenf the Pekin Ten Company."
Now, in the latter part of this paragraph lactated a
falsehood so glaring, that an anempt:to support it in
any Atlamic city would subject arty editor to universal
ridicule, and in New York he would heregarded as a
consummate knave, if not an absolute madman. We
are astonished to find that any Pittsburgh editor, hav
ing access (as must necessarily be the case) to New
Yolk jour la's for years past. can be so deplorably
ig
natant of the fact that the Canton Tea Company have
I been establiskedin New York FM YEA Re—and also.
that the Pekin Company hove only existed TWELVE
roams!—and that the latter honse was established
wholly inconsequence of the success and reputation
of the former. Here then is a fraud truly unblushing
-
—nay, verily abominable.
We are also reflected on as being an inferior con
cern. because "we select our Teas from the promiscu
ous cargoes which arrive." How .much more com
mendable to come out with the plain truth Than to
resort to such vile falsehoods as appear in the begin
ning of the paragraph now under review. The words
am "The Pekin Tea Company of New York, an-asso
ciation of henvyleapitalists in that city," &c.—( Let
the reader refer.) Is it possible that the inhabitants
of Pittsburgh can swallow all this! In stria city (New
York) every counting-house lad, of fourteen years old,
knows better. Let any individual who would satisfy
himself on the subject, refer to the files of the Courier
and Enquirer:, Journal t,f Commerce, or Commercial
Advertiser, which he may find at any large Hotel in
Pittsburgh and see, ifin the lists of imported merchan
dise, he can discover that any entries of Terra have
been made at the New York CUSiOT House for such
firm as the "Pekin Tea Company." We dcfythem
to prove that they ever received Teas direct - from
China! Who ever believes such a barefaced asser
tion are deservedly humbugged. As to the fact of
their having an "agent in Canton," the deny it. Who
is he? But the idea of their having another in Pekin,
is en absurdity to monstrous, and u falsehood ao gla
ring, as not to deserve consideration. Who ever
heard of Teas being selected and shipped at Pekin?
Outrageous nonsense:
We happen to know that the "fine Teas which their
agents in Pekin and Canton select, pot up and ship
&recite New York," are selected in Front street, in
this city, at the store of Beebe. Sr. Brothers, and other
wholesale Grocers, shipped thence by their carman to
the store 75 Felton street, then packed in imitation of
the Canton Tea Company's Teas by Frenchmenand
German 4. in the upper part of the building, brought
down stairs and thence dispatched to Pittsburgh and
other places.
Lastly—Who is the association of New York cap
italists. called the "Pekin 'tea Co." professing to hove
$500,000 engaged in the trade? The agents and
salestn n, Messrs Douglass, Callender and Roe,
were previously emplcyed at the New York Sun Newi
paper establishment. Mr Hamilton, the out door a
gent, was formerly subscription clerk fur Messrs Ed
mund Charles & Son's Bank Note List: and the only,
and exclusive owner and proprietor of the whole estab
lishment is Henry Wykoff, publisher of a paper cal
led the "New York Republic," now extinct, and well
known to the world as a controversial antagonist of
James Gordon Bennet, of the New York Herald.
We exceedingly regret the necessity which compels'
es to come out so promptly;—we era, nevertheless,
ready to procure the proper affidavits, certified before
the New York City and State authorities, in oonfirma-
Lien of all that 'we have now stated, if celled upon.
