Extract of a letter to a gentleman of Pittsburg, dated r\I9HPILLE, March 14, 1846 "Attracted to the street by a great noise; I found it occasioned by one man having shot another. I will give the facts as I have received them here. A man by the name of JUDSON. formerly a resident of your city, became intimate with Mt - s I'ORTLIZFIELD. Mr Porterfield having ascertained, as ho supposed, that such was the case, armed himself—met Judson on the streecand fired twice at him without doing him any harm. Judson then drew his pistol and shot Porterfield in the head; the bull meted between his nose and eyes anti canto out on the backpart of his head. Judson attempted to make his escape, but WOO soon argtsted by a city officer, and taken to the Court House fur examination. The examination was postponed by the Court fora few Joys. As soon us it was made Known List the ease was postponed, Mr. Porterfield, brother of the deceased, stepped toward Jurlson sod tired a hint se%ei al times—on! however, hit hint, and that only took a little hair and from his head. Sevetal persons present were injured—nee man had his arm broken by a pistol Juasuu then broke louse horn the other• and took refuge iu the City litoel—Porteifield rotated torn to the 4th story. Judson finding that he was Ponied, !coped Goa the portico of the 4th Amy to she ground; being btutined by the fall, he WWI tit/sun up fur dead, ut nearly so. lie was then taken to jail; it:tur buitig t.ately lodged in jai!, he said he was not much tnt, and that I.e. bad feigned to be iiijareJ, in older to get clear of roiteifteid and las iniends.-- About 1U o'clock, M. EL mot) went to the jail and demanded Juthon—have him they most—pettceably it could get him iii, inn, they were itittli, sreil to dcnittlish the jail. 'l'Le jailor finally deterred J udson into ttleir hands. The mob took him to the public and hung hint, bat fortunately for him the rope broke and let him down. A cry was then taised ' • take him beck to the jail, end let the law have its course Ile was then taken back to jail. Th e fi r i eth is of rulterfield will kill him the fiist opportuni ty that i n-esenta itself. He will never, I fear, go out of Nashville alive. iIIGHLY IMPOKTAHT lATLLLIGPMCL Y 11451 THE ARMT w OCCUPATIO.. —.
