the conflict is emcee led, all the odium of it must rest
un the unfortunate deceased and his ails iserai Mr.
Ritchie's protest is strong and unequivocal, but still it
was not beetled. In connection with this, the follow
leg, from the Richmond Compiler, puts the conduct j
of Mr. Plensant's in a still mote singular I•glr:
"In his dying moment ha stated, a list no ore had
before suspected, that be bad drawn the bull Isom one j
of his pistols after his friend had left him, the night f
previous In the comber, in order to diminish the dan•
gels of his adversary, whilst those to which be him.
velf was to be exposed, he must hive felt, made it
almost impasible to escape."
New Mode of //arbor Defenee.—We learn that a
committee"( the Horse at Waohington am now exam
ining a new mode of defence for harbors, invented by
Cop Lain T..yl. r. the well known inventor of the nub•
marine or dieing epperntna. It is ca Iled a sub marine
buttery, could be placed with little expense, and in
a short time, at the entrances of all ether harbors, and
would afford nine chances in ten fur destroying any
vessel that should attempt to enter. In addition to
this, we would mention a mode lately invented, and
now on experiment, of projecting cannon balls cckitir
hot in a continuous stream.
According to the description, the balls are placed
in a hopper or feeder, from which one at a time en•
ters a receiver to which a revolving, motion is impart
ed like that of a sling. After sufficient velocity is 111.1 s
acquired, the boll is projected into a tube, which serves
as a guide or direcior, like the barrel of a gun, and
thence against the object. With this machine, a show.
er of balls can be projected against n ship, with suf
ficient force and rapid succession sufficient to destroy
a vessel in a short time.
We hope that Congress, instead of talking and
wrangling about Oregon, and thus showing to the
British that we are divided. and can therefore be ea
sily intimidated, will speedily undertake to put the
country in a state of defence. Our sea coast and lakes
demand immediate attention of thin kind. It `l, idle
for us to talk of negotiating, while a poweful British
fleet should be hovering over our sea or lake coasts,
ready to fire upon our towns before any resistance
could be made. And it would be idle for the British
to think of intimidation, while we were fully prepared
to meet them.
Now we do nothing but talk, and wait fur the newt.
from steamship to steamship; and in the mean time,
the Ili itiAh, though talking, are preparing for action.
We believe that they are preparing to frighten, not to
fight. But this will encourage them till they do some•
thing that shall compel us to light. If we follow
ihcii example. and prepare CO fight while talking, the
areessity of lighting will b.rreVentCd, if we would

Extract from the "Report" of the '•Visiting Commit

"These extensive grounds are on Federal street
near the Arsenal. " • a The earliest collec
tion of Camellias was math here. Some of those
now in Possession of those distinguished nursery
men, ate ten feet high. • • • • The Selection
of GRELN ROUSE PLANTS is valuable and extensive.
"The Nurseries are all very correctly managed,
supplying every part of the Union, a detail of which
would occupy too much of our space; we therefore
content ourselves with stating that the stock is very ' ,
large, and in every stage of growth, consisting of
FOREST AND ORNAMENTAL TREES, EVER
GREEIIS, SHRUBS, VINES AND
CREEPERS,
with .1 collection of herbaceeous plants: FRUIT
TREES of the best kind and most healthy condition;
large beds of seeding apples, pears, plums, &c., es
stocks for budding and grafting; a plan•very superior
to that of working upon suckers, which carry with
them into the graft all the diseases of the parent stock.
•
"GannEn SEEDS of the finest quality have been
scattered over the country from these grounds, and
may always be depended upon. The Seed Establish
ment of these Horticulturists is one of the most ex
tensive in the Union, and its reputation is well sus
tained from year to year.
"To obviate the chance of mixture of the farina of
the plants of the same family, they have established
another nursery, at a suitable distance, so that degen
ration cannot take place, and which secures to the
purchaser a "genuine article.': Knowing thus the
age, quality and process of culture of every plant, the
supply from their grounds is recommended with great
confidence."
'•` Since the date of the "Report" from which the
above is extracted, the entire establishment has been

all the finer kinds, and consists of some thousands of
